kimk - 2010-04-06 7:40 AM Again I am up early when I don't have to be! What is this? No next week when the kids are back at school I won't be able to drag my arse out of bed! It is storming pretty good here...lots of lightning,  rain, rain go away because Kim has a run to do today! I was not able to ride to work yesterday like I wanted to but I did get a swim in. rnihill - 2010-04-08 2:14 PM So, we had a this foot specialized doctor type at work today.  He took scans of our feet which basically show where you are placing the pressure on your feet when you are standing.  The idea being that ideally pressure shoudl be placed on certain parts of your feet and that anything other than that puts pressure on your back, legs, etc.  Red showed the most pressure, yellow the lightest.

My feet were basically ALL red.  Very little yellow.  He said that I basically have no arch support in either of my feet.  Obviously, I "need" orthotics that can be customized based on my feet scans taken today.

So, of course he's trying to help his business.  I'm sure the bulk of the people that came through his line "need" orthoctics from him.  But on the flip side, maybe that would solve some of my feet, ankle, calf, hip, lower backpain.

Hmmm....

I see Dr. Scholl's has a similar device that they're advertising on TV these days (shows you where the pressure points are).  I think they have them at most Wal-Marts.  Perhaps you could try one of those to see if you get the same result... kind of a second opinion for free.

OK... NOW I'm signing off!!!

I tried one of these and the analysis seems to be similar.  It told me which inserts to get.  If I remember right, the inserts range in price from about $40-90? If I'm going to spend considerable money on some inserts, I'll go to the doctor and have insurance cover it.  I've read mixed reviews about the Dr Scholls stuff.

rnihill - 2010-04-06 9:12 PM Got a run in tonight on the Y track and then got my swim in.  I had fun racing the guy I shared a lane with.  He looked not too slow from outside the pool so I'm pretty psyched!

Your swim sounds better then mine! I had to share a lane with one of the MANY crabby old men we have at our pool. He refused to acknowledge me in the lane so I had to circle swim and every time I would try to pass him he would speed up or move to the middle of the lane and not let me pass, we would get to the wall at the same time and he would not let me pass. I was getting really pizzed seeing that I only had a 500 to swim and I was in a hurry, finally got him to stop long enough to ask to pick sides and that I would be only 10 min tops....he let me know he has been swimming for over 50 yrs and he ONLY circle swims, it would be to difficult to just pick a side,  So circle on lady! A_HOLE! I got out out and the mom/daughter that were in the lane next to me said they were done and I could have their lane....

OMG, really.  Some people just don't get it!

Wow, seriously!  I would have said something like, "You've been swimming 50 years and still haven't learned common pool courtesy?"  Really, I bet he drives the same way.

Would have loved to say something to him but seeing that I am an employee I needed to watch my tounge....so went on the safe side and left!

Hahaha... The local tooth fairy leaves $5 around here.  I wish she would of been around when I was a kid.

ouch! Our tooth fairy leaves $1!

Come on... Everyone has heard about the cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area!  And, don't forget about inflation.  Soon the tooth fairy will be leaving gold.

Hoping mine will be done loosing teeth by then!

Went for a swim on my lunch break. I think the key at our pool is to go after 1:00.  They had something going on and there were a lot of families and kids.  When 1:00 hit, the lifeguards cleared out everyone except for those swimming laps.  That left two of us. It was really nice and quite after that. Just barely made it back for a surprise meeting.

pdbman - 2010-04-08 1:00 PM Well everyone.  I'm signing off for a while.  We're heading out on our trip and I probably won't be able to sign on until next Wednesday. I expect everyone to work hard and keep the posting going in my absence.  You should be able to get up to at least 90 pages.  I have noticed that we have slacked off a little lately.  We were on page 12 at the end of the first day and we're only on 45 now. I'll even miss Rhoda hitting her 500th post. Talk about missing out on a once in a lifetime event.  Well, have fun everyone and I'll see you next week.

Hope you have a great time!

wow...that would have set me off.  I would have waited for him to come back so that I could have been ahead of him and done breast stroke.  If he tries to pass...same deal...move to the middle, or switch to freestyle to block the pass.  I've been swimming for 5 months...so it's difficult for me to not shove it right back in your face...circle on old geezer.

I wonder if there's a way to enforce "pool courtesy rules"?  Maybe a sign about sharing lanes for lap swimming?  (Maybe next to the sign about not running on the pool deck, not diving in shallow water, etc).  Because I'm sure regular members of the Y would also appreciate it, especially if there are no open lanes to move in to and you have to be stuck with someone hogging a lane like that.  It just doesn't seem right!

When I was on the swim team, if someone was slow and not letting people pass, it was common practice to grab their ankle and pull them, so they'd get water up their nose and have to stop - and then you could pass them.  Of course, we were all in junior high & high school, so that sort of meanness happened all the time Foot in mouth  But it stopped people from not letting others pass them!  I would never do that to anyone now, but it's tempting!  (Actually I never did it back then either - probably because I knew my pace compared to everyone else and lined up accordingly, so I was never in front of someone faster than me.)

. . . I still think the old man probably drives that way too - driving slowly in the middle of the lane and not letting anyone pass him Tongue out

Maybe if you hurry and start posting I wouldn't miss it. You can do some more of those one word posts like you did last month.

And thank you everyone on the orthotics feedback.  I shouldn't be too surprised since my Dad has had them for decades and my brother as well.  I'm bound to have problem feet too.  Smile  But it is nice to hear from other active people about their experience with them.  My feet have really hurt forever it seems like...

If this is a YMCA you are talking about, you should ask the pool director to get one of the "pool ettiquite" signs.  We have one at my YMCA, and other people in BT have commented that they have the same exact sign at their YMCA as well.

It basically has a picture of a lane and arrows on how to circle swim.  It also states rules that if you are in a lane by yourself, and someone wants to join...they need to declare their presance before swimming, and ask to join.  It is a rhetorical question...the person swimming cannot refuse.  It also describes that side by side swimming is recommended for 2 people, and circle swimming is manditory for three or more.  Lastly, it describes how to pass while circle swimming...so it also implies that you are not allowed to block.  If these rules are posted, they should be enforced by the lifeguards.

I think the more polite thing to do would be to constantly tap the old mans feet.  Maybe even tickle him.  At each wall...just keep appologizing until he lets you pass...if not...tickle him to your hearts delight...LOL.

QOTD:

How much water do you drink per day.  Maybe break it down by how much during workouts, and how much just during the normal day.

During workouts, I normally drink about 20 oz of sport drink per hour.  If I'm on a long run or OWS where I don't have a bottle with me, then much less...but I just prefer to drink a lot if I'm on my bike or at the pool (I bring a squeeze bottle to the pool).

During the day...I have been trying to drink a lot more.  I have a 64 oz jug at work that I try to finish each day...plus I drink about 8 oz in the morning...and about 20 oz when I get home.

Overall...I probably avereage about 80-140 oz of fluid per day...depending on how long I'm working out.

No where near enough...like maybe 32 oz on a good day.  That includes hydration during a workout.
