DirkP - 2010-05-08 12:15 PM Thanks for all the well wishing for me today.  I SAAA-MASHED my half marathon PR by 9:06.  My ols PR was 1:47:06 and my new PR is 1:38:00.  Today's weather conditions weren't the best for running.  Well, the temp. was nice  (48 feels like 41) but the wind was pretty bad.  I am not sure what the winds were at race time but they weref certainly gusting over 20 mph.  I would say the steady wid was close to 20 and the gusts were close to 30.  The current weather conditions say the winds are at 19 gusting to 34.

I felt pretty good for most of the race.  I took water or gatorade at nearly all of the stops, but the drinks were more like splashes since I don't really slow down.  I used an Accelgel 20 min before the race and at mile 8 and used 2 packs of shot blocks spread throughout the race.  I think my fueling was pretty good for the race.  If anything it was to much.  But anytime I flet like I was starting to run low I hit 3 shot blocks.  My avg. HR was 160 (probably about right for a distance race for me) and my avg. miles were 7:28 (which is really good for me).

I am very pleased with my race and I am SPENT!  As tired as I feel I must have left it all out on the course.  I think I deserve some extra sleep.  Right now!

I will post a race report later.

Nice job Dirk!  That pace is wicked fast.  Congrats on a new PR too!

tri808 - 2010-05-08 6:41 PM Finished my sprint tri this morning.  Overall, I did pretty well, but I now come to appreciate how flawless I did my first tri.  I made a lot of mistakes in this race...none of them really cost me too much time, but just a few irritating little things.

Once the official results become available, I'll finalize my RR...but here's the priliminary...times/rankings based on what I remember was posted on the board before I left.

Dude, that's a great race!!!  That's a fast bike and run time and so your swim was a bit slower.  My girlfriend says you don't suck at all.

Awesome race.  Of all the races I have done so far in my short racing career...the half marathon is one of my favorites.  Running is not my favorite activity, but the HM is such a blend of pace management, pain management, and just digging deep and pushing your body and heart to a new level.  5k's tend to be too much pain management for me...LOL

Bummer about losing your nutrition and car keys.   Not bad for a tuneup race - sounds like you learned quite a bit.  Nice job on the bike leg.

Yeah...all things considered...the gel and endurolytes I did fine without...but that won't be the case next week.  The good news is that my spare tube and tools move from the bento box to my new xlab super wing...and my nutrition goes into the bento box...so I won't need to put ANYTHING in my pockets during the swim.  In T2 I'll have another gel in my hat, and throw that in my pocket as I start the run.

As far as the key...I'm just glad I had a spare.  That will stay in the bike bag or in transition from now on.  Actually, I think I need to invest in one of those key locks that you can hide under your car.  Because when I swim during training, I hate leaving my keys with my towel on the sand...that's just asking to lose it when somebody kicks it over.

Dirk:

That's kickin' azz, man.  Congratulations.

I've signed up for a little "training" sprint put on by one of the LBS's, for next weekend (200yds/10mi./5K).  I've never even done a brick.  So, yesterday I "simulated" my race (best I could).  I made a thread about it in the general tri talk forum, but everything went better than I would have expected (having never raced in ANY of the 3 disciplines).  I did a short bike ride to get my HR up (and simulate the swim, best I could.  I then did 21mi. on the bike.  I got a re-fit yesterday morning and it's GREAT!  NO discomfort, at all.  It was also my first ride in tri shorts....and I LOVE them.  No issues.  I had it in my head I wanted to do the 5K in under 30 min..  Within the 1st 1,000yds, I was thinking I was REALLY slow.  After my 1st time check, I wasn't.  I decided to slow down a little (I wasn't sure I could maintain that pace).  Bottom line, I finished the 5K in 28:36.  When you've never timed yourself, the 1st one will always be a PR!.....lol

I also did a little run with the bike to simulate a T2, and that took about <1min.  I felt like I was running on stilts!....lol.  The bike re-fit was spot-on.  I didn't "kill" it.  And, I still avg'd 1mph faster than my best timed ride for that dist..

What a great practice run.  I'm excited for next weekend.....and I'm already (in my head) upping my target dist. races for 2011.  Previously, I was gunning for an OLY dist. race for 2011.  Now, I'm thinking I want to do:  HM for this fall; an OLY spring race and "possibly" a HIM dist. for the fall.

All of your race results and talk of them are inspiring, to me.  Keep 'em coming!

Sincerely,

jeff

Sounds like the car keys were the worst of it for sure.  I am like you, I don't like leaving my keys in my car or where they can be picked up either.  I used to have a key locker on an old truck of mine that came in handy acouple of times.  It was hidden so well that even when I told a friend exactly where it was they couldn't find it.

I have a lost key story thats worse though.  We were in Chicago in Feb. and I "lost" my keys to my truck.  The good thing was that we had taken the car on this trip and left the truck at home.  After checkin in at the hotel I noticed I couldn'y find any of my keys, so I used the wifes all weekend.  The bad part was when i bought the truck used, they only gave me 1 key.  I hadn't gotten another one yet and now the only one I had was gone.  To shorten the story, I had to have my truck towed to a dealer because it couldn't be re-keyed unless it was at a the dealer, the 2 new keys cost me $45 each (2) and the towing $50.  Then the day after I had this done my youngest daughter found the keys in her bag she had taken with her.

I have my first tri coming up in about a month (June 12) and I hope to put some of your problems in my memory bank so I don't incur them.

It sounds like you perform well but just had the fueling issues because they bounced out or something.  It sounds to me like your bike and run times are pretty good.  I am hoping to have about the same type of pacing for my Oly in June but never having don a tri. I am not sure what to expect.   I estimated a finish time a while ago and basically added a coupel of minutes to my PR's in each discipline to account for fatigue during the race.  We'll see how that pans out.

dirk awesome job on the PR, 808, thigns happen like that, but looks like you still managed to have a good day!!

I'll get my RR up in a few min but overall i am happy with how things went, horrible weather, and lack of swim/bike training this year showed, but a great run, and 5th overall in a long course race:-)
HUGE run PR as well.

Outstanding job everyone who raced.

Jeff- Glad your practice went so well today. You''ll have a great 1st tri.

Dirk & Jason- your speeds amaze me. Hope to one day approach those times.

David- unbelievable, especially with those conditions.

Did my longest bike ride today, 28 miles. Lots of hills, and I biked some of the streets on my tri route. Started riding with a friend I used to work with, who is way better than me, but makes our ride (which kicks my ) his "recovery". Ha.

I'll leave you with my FB post from today, as it kinda relates to tris (FYI Mateo & Nico are my sons)

When Mateo saw me in my wetsuit he said, "Hey is that mommy or batman?" Nico relpied, "It's batman!" Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms who are sometimes mistaken for super heroes.

Screaming run time!!!!!  That's an awesome pace in some bad conditions.  I am guessing that at least some of the run was into a headwind but even if it wasn't that's smokin fast.

It looks like the winds were bad everywhere yesterday.  I just checked NOAA for the weather history for Indy yesterday.  At 6:54 AM the winds were 21, gusting to 35 and at 7:54 the winds were 21 gusting to 31 then at 9 (as I was finishing my race) they were 22 and 30.  I had a tailwind for the last mile.

I don't really mind the wind to much when I am running but when riding..............IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!  I haven't cursed the wind.   Well at least that I am going to admit to. LOL

word on the street from a few athletes that ran with garmins was the run was actually 9.3 miles and not 8.8, which would have put the run split at 6:24 pace....... who to trust, the three garmins so far or the race website.....!!!

David:

Things I take from your RR.

1.  You ROCKED the run!  Great job!

2.  All of your disciplines, you said you'd no "nada" different.  Isn't that the perfect (for conditions - including where you are in your training) race?

3.  Just a Q.  Bike leg was 42mi..  Is the HIM distance "malleable"?  I have no idea, and I may have just read it wrongly.

Man.....reading your report makes me want to work up to a race this distance in a BAD way.  Way to go, man!  Congrats on a great finish (in my book).

jeff

BTW...totally weird Q.  As I was riding in the wind, yesterday, I was going at a pretty good clip, uphill....downwind.  Got to thinking.  Do you guys come OUT of aero as you ride, downwind?

the race listing on BT still has it listed as a half ironman (it was a few years ago). its now called a half lite (but never updated on here).

mile ish swim, 42 bike, 8.8 (or as its looking now 9.3) mi run.

the what i would change "nada" was on my transitions (one part of the race i typically ALWAYS have the fastest at).

a half IM is always a 2k swim/56 mi bike/13.1 mi run (although some i have seen have 55 or 58mi bikes).

all three of the sports need work, but the transitions were pretty much perfect.

I got to thinking about this.  My garmin 305 said I ran 13.17 in yesterday's race and that was certainly not a center of the road run.  I tried to stay as close to the "line" as possible but I had run where I could, when I could to pass or whatever.  But for a course to be off by a half mile that's a bunch.  .07 isn't a lot in a race but how would they have gotten a half mile more on their watch if it was a certified course.  I think the race directors need to do some more math homework.

Newbz, that's awesome man!  Congrats on that run as well.  I know you've been off the bike for a lot more than you'd want, but that's a great showing bro.  5th overall is great.  We had similar wind conditions here this morning for my long ride and it was nuts.  I have serious windburn across my cheeks and nose.
