titeloops - 2010-10-12 2:37 PM I'd do Augusta again!

That sounds fun, but I'm pretty close to dropping an entry fee on IMKY.

I'll start the bike anytime.  I can always adjust.  I'll probably need some good prep time before actually starting the program anyway.  Dec 1st would be okay with me (or maybe the week after, as my HM is Dec 4).

I'd love to do Augusta next year, and think I can do it with some good training over the winter.  I won't be setting any land speed records, but I think I can get enough base and build to focus on Augusta for next year, and finish well within my abilities.

I'm up for getting together for a race.  We all need to figure out what works for everyone.

Dec 1 for Jorge's sounds good to me. That'll give me time to get situated back at home after traveling all this time, and after Vulcan.

Either way, my bike needs work.

And yes, I'm hoping to do Augusta next year too.

I am good for Dec 1st and Augusta.  I was also thinking IM Louisville next year.  Going to see how this goes in November before I decide.  Talk to several who did it and they like it.

I'm sort of Iron manned out after this year. gonna stick to the half distance with some olys and sprints sprinkled in. IM training just becomes very all consuming. When my kids are bigger I may shoot for another one. Weird to be burnt out on IM before I even finish one huh?

Do you do a lot of road riding with groups?  Granted I only have a road bike but I can't see spending a lot of money on a road bike unless you're going to be doing a lot of rides where you don't want to use your tri bike.

I've got my eye on the Specialized Transition but that's so far into the future I'll need binoculars to see it!

I'll put in a vote for December.  My neighbor is a PT who is helping with with my knee.  He's an avid cyclist and said that I don't need to stop riding but when I told him about Jorge's program he wasn't wild about me doing a lot of hard intervals right now.  I'm hoping that starting Dec 1 vs Nov 1 will be enough time.

On a related note, what happens after the program?  The program will end in Feb (or March for us) but what do you do to make sure you don't loose all that new fitness before racing starts?

Fellas, longest run of my life this morning. 18 miles. I'm hurtin. 2 hours 57 minutes. Don't think I could have run 8 more. This worries me a bit. I've done multiple 13 milers. I'm a month away from B2B as of yesterday. Gonna try and get 2 more century rides in, a 20 mile run and prolly a 15 miler or so, before taper. I know my run volume isn't where it needs to be. Not much I can do about that now. Gonna continue to go hard for 2 more weeks, then start to taper the volume while maintaining the intensity. Unless something goes incredibly wrong at B2B I think I'll finish in around 12 hours. Questions is, how much of the marathon am I gonna walk. Mark, will you take a look at my log and give me an honest opinion? Think I'm ready? Should I throw any time goals out the window and just think finish? Due to some family stuff I've missed a lot of workouts lately. I think I have IM cold feet.

Welcome to IM training

You're at the self doubt stage.

I personal think 20 mile runs for an IM are useless, unless your in the 10:30ish range.  That last 57 minutes is what will kill your training tomorrow and Saturday.  Keep the runs in the 1:30 to 2:00 range and focus on the biking.

I'll look at your logs.  Some food for thought I did a 11:36 at IMKY with a 4:22 marathon and my longest run was 90 minutes.

Thanks Dood. I'm think I now agree with you about the long runs. I hurtin bad today. I think yesterday is gonna have to be my longest run. Gonna maybe do 13 to 15 next week. I feel like I'm in really good HIM shape, just not so sure about Full. I will say that my HIM felt really easy. I don't mean that obnoxiously, but it was a lot easier than some of the workouts I've done in training. I'm also going into my full a little overweight. I thought I would lose that last 5 to 8 lbs just based on volume, but it hasn't happened. Piece of advice fopr any of you peeps who are thinking about doing long course, lose the weight first, cause you will be starving all the time!! I'm shoving a club sandwich down my face as I type this.

So, looks like this group is in for Augusta next year! Should be fun. that swim would have to be downhill to be any easier, the bike is fast, and the run is flat. You peeps are gonna love it!

That's probably a question for the main board or the Georgia board.

I was able to sign up in August for the Augusta.   I am in.  Look foward to doing it with this group.  Plan on staying at the Marriott Augusta.  It is the host hotel and very close to everything.

Todd,
I am on the self doubt phase myself.  I did a 104 mile ride today after doing a 50 plus miler yesterday and a 6 mile run.  I felt really good when I was done today.  The thought of running a full marathon afterwards is numbing.  I am sure most people feel that way for the first.  I am going to work high volume the next two weeks with runs and cycling.  At this point I can't do anything else except get something out of the last two weeks of training before we start to taper.  I am doing one more century next Sunday and a 10 mile run afterwards.  There is a local ironman competition up from my house this weekend.  I am going to do the bike portion on my own and then put on the running shoes for a 10 mile run.

Just keep putting in the miles.  I was pretty freaked out before my marathon.  Have faith in your training and you guys will be fine!

In other news, anyone have recommendations for tires?  I slipped of the shoulder and  tore up my back tire on a group ride this weekend.  Luckily I managed to recover without crashing but it was pretty exciting for a minute.  My bike came with Kenda Kriterium.  Any recommendations for new tires or should I just get the same ones again?  If I replace the back should I also replace the front?

Are you going to bandit an IM race?

The ten miles after a Century might be a too much for your first IM build.   If you really want to do a 10 miler off the bike then do 1 to 1.5 hours of tempo intervals.  Your legs will still feel weird/jello without the extra 4 to 5 hours of work.

That's awesome!

Mark,
thanks for the advice.  Maybe I should rethink.  My original thoughts was to semi simulate how I might feel when I try and run the marathon after the bike.  I still think I will stick with the 112 mile bike and maybe do a one hour run afterwards. Any thoughts on that?  I want to get one more 100 plus bike ride in.  What are your thoughts on tapering?   I read that some say three weeks and some say two weeks. I thought I might try a 100 mile ride on Sunday, October 31st about 13 days out from the IM.  It is along the flat Florida coast and would be about the same conditions as the B2B.  This would be my last hard ride but  it would make the 5th 100 plus ride and the third 100 plus ride in three consecutive weekends.  Your thoughts.

Conti GATORSKINS! Sposed to be bombproof. I put em, on my race wheels. Maybe not this fastest tire, but I'll trade that for not having flats.

I think we both may be over training a bit. I was having a few beers with a couple buddies this weekend. Both are multiple IM finishers. Both have done at least 1 IM in sub 12 hours. When I told them my training for last week they freaked out. Said it was more than they ever did. Made me feel better.

I checked out a few reviews and a lot of people are saying the same thing.  Other thing people are saying is that they hold up well on the trainer.  I need to replace my back tire but should I get a matching one for the front? Also, what width do I want to get? My current tires are 700x23.  They where the ones that came with the bike so I've never had to think about this before.  Should I just get the same thing or look at a different width?
