thor67 - 2011-06-20 10:15 AM Scott, for an Olympic do you do just liquids or do you carry any gels etc.?

I will  use cliff blocks on the run every 2 miles or so, but liquid on the bike.

Nothing for a sprint race. Might bring some water to get the salt out of my mouth if it's an ocean swim.

I actually tried a GU Gel at the sprint race yesterday...nasty stuff to say the least. Went to the infinit site. pretty neat set up they have that is for sure. May pick some up before the oly in July.

Thanks!

I agree... It's best to call them if interested... Make sure you have a chaser of water if you have gel's...  Just an FYI...

Scott, you seem to be pretty knowledgeable on all things nutrition, so I've got a question for you (or anyone else who wants to chime in).  In a nutshell, how many calories per hour do you take in on your longer bike rides?

I ask because I definitely hit a wall yesterday on my bike, and I think it was due in large part to insufficient calories.

The ride was a tough one, 71 miles total, with lots of up and down and very few flat sections.  I handled the first 40 miles or so relatively easy, mostly in zone 2 HR with quite a few stretches into zone 3 (as was planned).  At about the 45-50 mile mark, I really started to struggle.  This was far and away the hardest part of my route, so that has something to do with it.  But I also noticed that I was quite hungry and just lacked energy in general.  I've biked this distance several times, so I don't think it was solely conditioning.  I ended up bagging the bike after about 60 miles, realizing that if I finished the whole thing, I'd end up spending far more time in the saddle than I had planned.

For nutrition, I was consuming 150 calories per hour of HEED, which I'm using in prep for my HIM b/c that's the drink that will be served on course.  I used the 150 calories based on my weight - roughly 150-153.  About 2 hours prior to the ride, I ate a bowl of oatmeal with a good bit of fruit, along with two pieces of toast w/ PB.

So what do you think?  More calories?  I could mix my HEED to give me about 175 calories per hour and see how that goes?  I could also bring along some type of solid food to have later in the ride.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Well that's a variable. The only way you can calculate  how much calories you need to take in, is by having a sweat test. What I had to do, was ride on a trainer for 1 hr with the temp being 70 degrees, I weighed myself before the ride. Weighed myself after the ride, provided that info to my coach. I also had to tell him, how much to drink I used. From there, he calculated based on my sweat rate and how much sodium I lost, that I need just about 300 calories an hour.  From that, I contacted my dietitian, who worked with the guys at Infinit nutrition and designed a formula for me so that I didn't bonk on my run's and bikes.

It sounds like you need more calories, also HEED on a course will be watered down. You might have to take some salt tablets as well. How much salt are you losing an hour? When you sweat, does it turn white or is it very salty?

for example, look at how much sodium is in either powerbar perform, or gatorade. You'll see how they are close. With Heed, you'll have to make the difference up somehow.  With my formula, I don't use on course nutrition. so for my HIM coming up in a few weeks, I'll be drinking a bottle an hour. So 300 calories, every hour. I plan to be off the bike in hour and half maybe. So I'll bring 3 bottles with me.

So in my answer, yes I think you need more calories. During that ride, how many calories are you burning for the 71 miles?

I biked 79 miles this past weekend, and I burned over 6000 calories, just to give you an idea. Mostly water weight.

Scott

Wow, you raised a lot of good points.  I hadn't thought about them watering down the HEED mixture.  My goal was simply to live off the course, without having to carry several extra bottles.  But it sounds like it'd be better to carry extra bottles to ensure proper nutrition than to go without and risk a bonk.

I think I'll up the calories a little bit, include some salt tablets, and see how that goes.  Fortunately, I've got a long time to figure my nutrition out through trial and error.

How'd you determine the number of calories you burned?  I know the 310xt will give you a number, but I always assumed that wasn't very accurate.

Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, I used my garmin 705... You need to make sure you're weight is accurate. When I use my Garmin 310xt, I make sure I weigh myself before the ride, run to get an accurate reading. It actually syncs up with my tanita scale... again me with the numbers.

Scott

PS about the watering down, I know they do this because I volunteered at a race which they did it

Trust me I quickly reached for my water bottle on the bike after I consumed it!

Race report:

Sprint Triathlon(first ever)

Weather:Cold and rain with a wind out of the north. 52 degrees.

Pre race: Got there early and wondered around aimlessly  trying to figure out where to go and what to do. Set up bike etc in the pouring rain. My transition area=not very good to say the least.

Pre race meeting on pool deck with around 100 people-Only heard about half of what was being said. Very nervous about swim. A person can talk the talk but can you walk the walk(or swim the swimLaughing)

Swim:Pool swim in heats. I was in 3rd last heat. I guessed on my time for the 1/2 mile as I have never really did a time trial. Was thinking I put a time that was too fast. 4/lane. I was seeded as the slowest. First guy was a 1:30 faster then me. Concerned to say the least.  Everybody pretty much knew everyone from other triathlons.  When our lane opens we cross pad to start our time. Once in the pool it was race time. Caught up and drafted to the 3rd guy with in 2 laps. From there on it was a train of 4 people. Tough to pass 4 in a row. Scared I would power out. Lost count of laps along the way. Started having to do breast stroke coming into the walls  due to the people in front. Had enough and started passing. Ended up pass the last one just as the kickboard was put in the water! Powered the last 50 meters no problem.

A)Trust your training-Should have passed at the 1/2 way mark. I could have improved my swim by at least a 1 1/2 minutes.

Ended up #1 in my age group and #5 overall.

T1: Brutal! Garbage bags are not the way to go. 5 minutes later, out of the transition! Going to buy 2 clear rubbermaid boxes! Watched all the slower swimmers head out of T1. @#$@

Bike:Well finally clipped in! Ready for first real ride with shoes clipped in. Head out of parking lot and head north right into the wind...uphill for first half. A little disappointed with cycle. Need to buy cycle computer. No one in sight to really keep pace with...oh, hold it some gal blew by me in the first 200 yards never to be seen again...

A) work on hills

Ended up #7 in my age group and #25 overall.

T2:Again a disaster, by this time the bag was a complete mess! Tried a Gel to see how it may effect me in the Oly. Near threw up, quickly grabbed water bottle to wash away the taste. Shoes on and off to the run.

NOTE:T1, Bike, T2 all grouped as 1 time.

Run: 4 laps. Good part: no road crossings, bad part, about 1/4 of the lap was on a wet muddy field and a muddy gravel road. One part they had to lay down rubber mats to cross. Over all the run was okay. No one to pace myself with though. Shoud be better in a open water race! First lap felt like my legs were going to fall off. After that it was fine. Decent run. Had a good finish!

Ended up #3 in my age group and #12 overall.

Results.

Overall placing:15/91 finishers

Age:4/12

Time:1:27:07

Swim:13:21

Bike(with transitions):49:13

Run:24:33

Overall I am happy with the result. I cannot wait to so this race next year! I feel there is room for a lot of improvement!

Hello everyone! I was out of town for the weekend at a dance competition with my daughter....and to top it off -- people were checking in our hotel for a race!!!!! I told someone I had to be a dance mom while they were doing a triathlon right in front of me. But that's OK, my daughter did a great job!

I have a race on Sunday morning at 7am. A sprint with a 250 m swim, 12 mile bike, and 5K. Should be fun! What should my training for the week look like?

I finished my first tri on Saturday - whoop! swam off into lala land

Biked OK

Bonked the run

Ended at 1:54:16.  Not the 1:40 i was hoping for at the low end, but better than 2 hrs which was my "realistic" expectation.

Congratulations bro!  I may swim off into lala land myself when my first tri happens late July hehehe

I have the Oly, July 17, unless I can squeek another sprint in at the beginning of July. Going to look signing up for one in the middle of August and one for sure the beginning of Sept.

More info, hopefully less mistakes for others I say!

Went on my first flat bike ride on Coyote Creek Bike Path yesterday for 18 miles.  Never been on this path and went with 2 friends.  First 1-2 miles out, I did a warmup cruise with them then I was gone!  ^_^

1st 9 miles:  About 15.8-16.6mph avg, 85-90rpm against some head wind, 149-152bpm (mid Z4 using Karvonen formula), RPE6-7 (1-10 scale).

2nd 9 miles:  About 20.5-21.3mph avg, 85-90rpm (shifted up a gear), no head wind, 147-149bpm (low Z4), RPE6.

I was very pleased with the experience and change since my regular route has alota hills with varying conditions.  =)

I planned on doing a run right after to do my first brick workout but my friend had the keys so I couldn't change my shoes and by the time he finished, it was too late to go.  Argh!  I'll do that midweek.

I have a race on Sunday morning at 7am. A sprint with a 250 m swim, 12 mile bike, and 5K. Should be fun! What should my training for the week look like?

I think you should have a taper type week (-30-40% volume) with 2 days prior to race day as rest days.  That's what I have scheduled for myself before my races happen. =)

I just had a thought.  All of my workouts have been done after work (6-8pm).  Since my race is coming up in about a month, should I start doing some workouts in the morning since the race is happening at that time?  What's the difference?  I remember reading a post about this somewhere but I can't remember where.  >.<

Time:1:27:07

Swim:13:21

Bike(with transitions):49:13

Run:24:33

Overall I am happy with the result. I cannot wait to so this race next year! I feel there is room for a lot of improvement!

Great job! The swim was a half mile? Smoking time. I'm torn on racing the same races from year to year. On the one hand you want to gauge your improvement. On the other hand there's so many races out there I want to try them all.

Scout and Thor - You guys rock!!  Thanks for sharing your experiences.  I admire both of your swims.  I am torn between being nervous about my first tri coming up on this Sunday and really, really wanting to get one done so I have a starting point.

I had my son time me doing a 1/4 mile OWS yesterday.  There were only small waves.  I measured the distance between the docks and it was approximately 28 yards and I did 18 laps. My time was 15:40.....that I know is slooooowwwwww.  Thor would have finished his 1/2 mile before I was done with my 1/4 swim Surprised, but I am hoping the actual race will be easier with not having to turn around every lap.  So far I've done 5 quarter mile swims without stopping in the lake so I am ready.  Slow but steady.

Had a dream that I was in the tri and the swim went ok, then was the run which was ok, then I figured out I had forgotten my bike, helmet and shoes.  Was frantically trying to get a phone to call my hubbie to bring my bike down. Running around the tranistion area begging folks for a phone. Guess I am alittle nervous but really ready to just do it.

I would, especially since it's going to be harder to get your HR up in the morning.

Yeah the swim was great! It was a 1/2 mile(750meters). Went swimming this morning and still didn't feel great...I must have 2 swimming modes! Smile

I hear ya on repeats. This one is nearby and easy to get to. Plus with me having so much triathlon experience(1) I figure is will be a good gauge for next year... assuming the course stays the same.

You may be nervous, but once you hit the water, it will be all business! You will do great in the swim!

Funny, I was dreaming about triathlons last night except it was for the swimming!

The first masters swim after my race I felt so slow in the water. The second workout I still only felt about 90%. That level of intensity takes a lot out of you.

Too funny Linda about your dream.  A few weeks ago I dreamt I was at the tri and in the transition from the swim to the bike I decided to go and take a shower.  Then, when I got to my bike my road bike was all jacked up so I went to my mountain bike (funny I had both a shower and my mountain bike available to me) but I couldn't get on that because I couldn't figure out where my helmut was.

I'm excited for Sunday.  Last week I was really nervous about it but this week I am confident.  I know that I've come a long way and know that I'll be able to finish (and for this one that is all that matters).  Two and a half months ago I couldn't run more than a mile without stopping and I was in a lot of pain.  I am now up to running 5.5 miles on my long runs.

the big day is fast approaching. Who will beat who That is the question. Remember to have fun out there.  Wait to the night before, lets see how much sleep either of you get if you're having dreams already a week out. Remember to hydrate a lot this week
