So good! Them being digital even means that you don't get the negative effects of Legos (stepping on them in bare feet)

This is my model I'm working on.

Go Felicia !!!

And Ben too, right?

Yes. He's been on antibiotics all week, but I think he is good to go now. We practiced transitions last night and I emphasized that this is supposed to be fun.

Very cool! Go Ben!!!

Chris reminded me to reply to this.  Here goes

cdban66 - 2012-08-08 9:16 PM OK, I have reread the race report at least three times and I have a few questions for Janyne about Vineman. And please keep in mind I am a short course newb, so long course stuff is foreign to me. 1) Food - It seems to me that this is/was a very important part of your race. How many total calories do you think you took in?

On the bike: 4 Clif bars + 2 Fig Netwons + 1 cereal bar + 1 Clif gel = 1620.  That works out to 250 per hour.   At least as important, I had seven bottles of water.  This is good.  I can do about 20 oz per hour comfortably and my ride was 6.5 hours.

On the run, no idea.  They had Clif Shot Bloks on the course.  I knew that and I trained with Bloks (at little) and their gel (more so).  The gels did not sound good at all.  Maybe I should have started with a gel and gone with that the first hour.  I dunno.  I ended up taking 1-2 bloks every other mile.  That works out to maybe 500 calories or a little more.  Hmm.  Sounds like a lot.  Didn't feel like a lot though.  I'll have to give that some more thought.

2) It looked like you were able to eat afterward. Is that an acquired skill? I find I can't eat after a sprint, I can't imagine eating after an IM.

Uh.  I could not eat the burger.  I felt like I had to eat and drink something for recovery.  The fruit went down really well.  The cookie looked disgusting.  The chicken soup went down well and I went back for more.  So I had some fresh fruit and chicken noodle soup and a bottle of water.  I had a PB&J before bed because I felt that I needed to eat something for recovery.  I also drank about a liter or more of water.

3) I may have misread, but how did you enter T2? Did you slide your feet out of the shoes and leave them clipped in? Or was it complete removal? Any reason why?

I wear regular bike shoes, not tri shoes.  I just unclipped and got off the bike.  For 112 miles, I want to wear the most comfortable shoes that I own.  If I wanted to shave time off of T2, I would have started running and stopped at the first empty port-a-pot instead of waiting in line for the one there ;-

Thank you very much! You answered another question I had, before I even asked it.

OK, now I have a question for Kirsten. In your race report (also read multiple times) you mentioned feeling nauseated during the run. And a couple of nutrtion items during the run. Did you figure out where the nauseated came from? And/or did you get it settled? You also mentioned neck soreness on the bike. Was it the rough road, or bike positioning, or something else?

What's interesting about MY toys is that from school and now like 6 years into my career we have gone from mostly by hand to almost exclusively computer. I was lucky enough to have been trained in both.

Chem, Bio has much more expensive toys. I could NEVER be trusted.

It's called Revit (Autodesk Product)

What you were seeing on screen is the bare bones that I actually do my work in where it gets really cool is when I actually use the render mode where it takes all the data I have placed (for instance light fixtures and wattage, paint and reflective levels, time of day etc) and let it generate an actual view in a space.

OK, so I am comparing the BT HIM plan to the Fink plan as some of you had mentioned.  I have some questions for those of you that used the (modified) fink plan for HIM.

I see that the HIM race is in week 22. Did you follow the plan as such for 22 weeks?

I don't see much of a taper for the HIM.  Did you do more of a taper?

I remember some of you said you thought the FINK plan was light in some areas.  Which were those? I see the run "only" gets up to 1:45.

Thanks for the guidance for this HIM newb...

A TRAINING QUESTION?!

I've never followed any plan "as such" Tongue out

Whether one should follow all 22 weeks depends on what kind of a base you're starting out with and for how long you've been at that level (or how long it took you to get there).

It doesn't really include a taper, and to be honest you don't need much of one for a HIM, especially for the swim, somewhat for the bike, more so for the run. Taper's actually one of those things best decided as one gets closer to the date depending on the actual training one's done.

Fink plan is definitely light on swimming and I really do not like the way he structures his suggested swim workouts.

The running is just fine to get you through the HIM run, and the length of the longest run isn't really relevant. In fact, I'm considering never going over 2:00 or so even for the IM marathon.

I basically follow plans because I don't know any different Undecided. However I (usually) don't stress if I miss a day or decide to cut something a bit short.

I think I like the idea of 22 weeks because I have several weeks between my OLY and when I would start a 20 week plan for the HIM.

I did wonder about the "flat" nature of his swim workouts. Maybe I'll follow the BT plan (incorporating some Sheila T work) for those.  I like having the "canned" plan in BT tho.  I like how the planned vs. actual graphs work and I like getting the email at 9:15 every evening telling me what to do the next day.

I think you are on the right track. It's nice to use a pre-made plan as the framework and then modify it. I'm glad you are willing to change a few things and not stress missed days.

I used pre-made plans in the beginning and was glad that I did but now I do mine completely on my own. I always have one that I reference if I am second guessing myself though (or I ask a few people)

cdban66 - 2012-08-10 12:52 PM Thank you very much!

The nausea was heart rate related--if I got my HR above about 145-150, I was nauseated.  I suspect it was some dehydration (I only pee'd once during the race--and no, not on the bike )--although I drank a bit more than I had figured I needed, it was warmer than I had trained at.  Neck soreness= handlebars too wide + very rough roads + poor head position (I try to look too far ahead of myself--hmmm, that may be figuratively as well as literally...)

Asalzwed - 2012-08-11 3:43 AM Sometimes my job feels like Legos. Digital Legos

Is that good or bad?

So good! Them being digital even means that you don't get the negative effects of Legos (stepping on them in bare feet)

This is my model I'm working on.

TOYS!!!!!!!!!!

Virtual toys, very cool!

That's really why I loved studying chem and bio ... it was like getting to play with the coolest of cool toys all the time, including manipulating DNA.

What's interesting about MY toys is that from school and now like 6 years into my career we have gone from mostly by hand to almost exclusively computer. I was lucky enough to have been trained in both.

Chem, Bio has much more expensive toys. I could NEVER be trusted

I could totally see you blowing stuff up for Mythbusters.

Great. And this is feedback by the only person who has actually met me in person on BT.

That was a compliment!

Ahhh yes, Revit.  We had to start putting our pump systems together in that format so the consulting engineers could us them.  Some of those drawing files are HUGE especially when you have Arch, Elec. Mech. and Structural all on one :P

QUOTE]cdban66 - 2012-08-10 12:52 PM Thank you very much!

The nausea was heart rate related--if I got my HR above about 145-150, I was nauseated.  I suspect it was some dehydration (I only pee'd once during the race--and no, not on the bike )--although I drank a bit more than I had figured I needed, it was warmer than I had trained at.  Neck soreness= handlebars too wide + very rough roads + poor head position (I try to look too far ahead of myself--hmmm, that may be figuratively as well as literally...)

Chris, It's definitely good to be asking about what has worked and what has not worked for other people. But just be careful to create your own hydration and nutrition plan through trial and error in training. This is going to be one of the things that is extremely unique to each individual.

Exactly. I am starting to compile data for a starting place, in addition to my own experiences. I think I woefully under feed on longer bike rides and am just looking at how others are approaching it. Also, I figure my needs as a 215 lb dude may be a bit more than Janyne's or Kirsten's needs. So, I mash it all together and then do whatever.
