Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by skitri Very long, very hot training weekend. Heat index was 95 yesterday and 99 today...ugh!! Got 105 miles in on the bike ...felt really good except I need to adjust my aero bars...I think I need to come up just a bit - lots of strain in my shoulders. Had to jump on the bike path for parts of it, just to get some relief from the sun. Question for the group...to sock or no sock on the bike?? I usually don't wear socks and never had an issue but found I was developing blisters on both big toes during yesterdays ride. Up at 4:30 to take my hubby to the airport and then off on a 15 mile run...could not believe how soaked I was just 5 miles in...stopped at Dunkin Donuts for water and cup of ice that promptly went into my jog bra...sadly it was all melted after only a mile. But it's all done and tomorrow is rest! So during my long session I had some questions for those who have done an IM... I get that I pack everything in separate bags for each transition, but when I come into T1 where do I put my wetsuit, goggles, etc...into another bag?? When do you collect your transition bags and bike? Right at the finish or next morning?? Great training this weekend!! I don't wear socks on the bike, but I know many that do for that distance. A lot of it is the shoes, some are designed (usually tri specific) for using without socks. You put your wetsuit in the same bag that you take your bike stuff out of for T1. Same thing in T2, run stuff out and bike stuff into that bag. You can collect your bike and bags after the race (or have someone collect them for you). You need to come back the next day to collect your special needs bags. I also think you can wait till the next day to get your bike and transition bags if you need to. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Just catching up with everyone's posts, sounds like everyone is doing well, or at least fighting through the challenges to come out on top at the other end! Re: the sock question, I have decided to go without socks for the bike portion of the IM, but put them on for the run. I don't wear them for HIM, but I am a little nervous about blisters from the chafing that is sure to happen when my feet are soaked in the marathon. I use Body Glide on my feet and aquaphor and powder in my shoes to help with chafing. Did my long bike this weekend with no socks and just Body Glide on the feet and had no problems at all. Great question about the transition and special needs bags. I just found out that you can have someone else get your bike and transition bags for you, which will be a great help so I don't have to worry about it after finishing. I have had mixed training success over the past few days. A week ago, I did a training ride in the "hills" and though I did well, I was frustrated because I felt really slow. Wednesday I had my short brick day, a 45 minute bike and 30 minute run, and I was so slow on the bike--I attributed that to having gone to the gym the day before and being really sore. Then Thursday morning, my husband and I joined a group for a ride, and tried to go with the faster group. Within 2 miles we were having trouble keeping up, so we dropped off. After about 10 miles my husband asked me if my bike felt weird, and I said YES! It feels so slow! Well, he had bought some cheap tires on sale at Nashbar and had put them on our bikes the weekend before. What a difference cheap tires make, I had no idea! I thought I was just having a terrible week of cycling, I was questioning my fitness and everything. So those tires came off, Vittoria Corso Evos went on, and voila! On Saturday I had an awesome 102 mile ride! So, for the record, do NOT buy the Cirrus tires by Hutchinson from Nashbar. Horrible. Anyway, that 102 was with a group but I hung off the back for almost the whole ride, trying to avoid drafting as much as possible. It was my farthest ride on my tri bike, and I was happy that my shoulders/neck didn't start hurting from the aero position until mile 90. Unfortunately, I missed my swim and run on Friday because of a colossal headache, and I missed my long run and short bike yesterday because of an upset stomach. I did get my swim in this morning, even though my stomach is still protesting, but it was fine during the swim. So I have three questions: 1. Since I missed my long run yesterday, and missed an 8 miler Friday, should I try to make it up tomorrow? I have a 75 minute run with some zone 4 work planned for tomorrow morning. Should I make it a 2 hour run instead? And if so, should I throw in some zone 4 work? 2. With MDot IM races, I have heard a couple of things about what happens "the morning after," such as getting finishers items (what items?), picking up special needs bags, etc. I will have to get on the road to head home fairly early the day after the race, so what is it that I should expect to have to do that morning? 3. Has anyone used the Body Glide gel/lotion that turns into a powder when applied? I've only used the deodorant style stick. Any reviews on the other stuff? Thanks all, and happy Monday! Oh, and here's my latest blog post: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/07/getting-down-to-b... |

Oh, and here's my latest blog post: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/07/getting-down-to-b... Cheap tires can really be a drag, but a lot of times I like to use them for a couple of reasons. One is most of the times they have better flat protection so for most of my rides where I am alone and not trying to keep up they help. Another is that I don't care how fast they wear out on the trainer. All that being said, if I am going to ride with the group, I put on a faster wheel and tire combination cause they do make a difference. |

Looking at the 70.3 in Austin October 27th. It's a 12 hour drive from here, but if my friend signs up we could drive together, and train together. Anybody done it? It would be our first HIM, so I would be looking to complete it while enjoying the experience, as opposed to racing it. Going round and round trying to make up my mind! Jaime Just do it....... |

I usually don't wear socks and never had an issue but found I was developing blisters on both big toes during yesterdays ride. I personally always have to have socks. I feel uncomfortable without them. I went sockless for one sprint tri only. To each his own, some people prefers socks, others don't. Maybe you have something on the shoe that's rubbing it? Was your feet hot/sweaty? The extra moisture could be the culprit. For an IM, unless if you've done a LOT of long miles 80-100+ on the bike without any issues, I would just wear socks for prevention sake. Nothing will hurt more than having a blister on the bike, then having to endure 26.2 miles on the run. that's just me. :D |

I will say that I wear road cycling shoes and don't know if there is a difference with Triathlon specific shoes when it comes to lining inside the shoe. I have both tri and road cycling shoes (I just bought them as a Birthday present to myself). There IS a big difference on how the inside feels. The Tri shoe has better lining, that you can't feel the crevices or edges of the inside compared to the road shoes. When I put on the road shoes sockless (just for the heck of it), and I immediately got welts and such from it. It was uncomfortable though. Still, I wear socks with my tri shoes anyways because I can still kind of feel the crevices/edges and it bothers me. If my feet gets sweaty, it can get "sticky" in the shoes and it's just uncomfortable. The socks acts as a buffer and keeps my feet completely dry. |

Oh, and here's my latest blog post: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/07/getting-down-to-b... I have done well with Continentals and Michelin Pro 3's. I have a pair of the Pro 4's I picked up at a buy one, get one sale but haven't put them on the bike yet. The advice I always get, and thus the advice I always give is to not worry about missed workouts, just pick up where you are in the plan and move on. At the end, a miss run here or a missed bike there is not going to have a big impact on your race results. The MDot store puts out all the finisher gear the morning after the race. It is usually quite busy as everyone wants to get the "hot" item for the year. The only line longer than getting into the store is the one waiting for next years sign up (depending on which race you do.) So if you want some finisher gear, get up early and get in line before you leave for home. They will have some available on line later, but it is what doesn't sell at the race so it may not be what you want or the size you need. Typically what you get the morning after says IMXX 2013 Finisher and is a bit different than what is available before the race. There is a lot of items though for sale before the race, it just won't say Finisher on it. Clothing, glasses, license plate brackets, you name it is for sale. I haven't tried the new Body Glide! I look forward to reading your latest blog Becky! |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Becky-I'm slowly coming around to the "if you miss a workout, don't try & make it up", but I'd still try & do 2 hrs if you can, since its not much longer & is more LR territory. It's hard when you miss a long run. I missed an hr run on Friday, & thought I would make it up today since I only had a swim scheduled, but after 2 HOT & humid runs this weekend (1.5hrs & 2.5hrs), my legs weren't happy. I just did 2 miles & then some weight training since I was at the gym & the pool wasn't open yet (weight training my arms right before swimming wasn't the smartest move). I haven't tried the power body glide, but really like "tri slide", it's a spray, so a lot easier to apply to my feet (& ankles & neck for my wetsuit). After a week of picture-perfect weather, it turned hot & humid this weekend. It was awful on my runs. The heat really affected me on Sat, so I was determined to make Sun better. I focused on a 4/1 run/walk strategy, which is more than normal. I'm trying to figure out what will work for IM that will keep me moving throughout the entire marathon. Other than having some GI issues the last 45min, it worked well. I felt like I could keep going & felt good after despite the heat & not having run that long since Kansas. Kathleen, yes I'll be in WI this weekend! It will be good to see you again. I'm a bit terrified of the hills, & I'm sure afterwards I'll be worried about what exactly I've gotten myself into. Regardless, I am looking forward to it for precisely that reason. I really need to see what exactly I've gotten myself into!! Oh, I always wear socks, even with my tri shoes. I do wear thinner socks than the ones I run in though. |

I've been involved with charity work for JDSU as well. When I was involved in the Chicagoland Motorcycling community I helped organize huge charity rides with a fellow rider and friend who's son had JD. My wife and I also have another friend who's daughter has JD. When we were engaged my wife's friend had it as well. Sadly, she passed away from complications from JD the day they were picking up the bridesmaid dresses for our wedding. So that charity has always hit home with us! |

Stay safe. It's been a stressful week trying to coordinate workouts with kids camps, etc..while my hubby is away. Did get 4100m in the pool this am - finished with 10 mins to spare to run across town to grab my son at one camp and rush home before my daughter is dropped off from her camp! Decided against the 2 mile swim race. Current lake temps 86 degrees...more importantly one swimmer was just commenting about maneuvering around the weeds in the water....swimming in bath water is bad enough but I'm not doing weeds!! Instead I'm opting for a Century ride for a local cancer treatment facility. I know most of the routes their using so it should be a fun ride plus free lunch and massages afterwards....sounds like a much better deal for the $$$. |

Do any of you Ironman veterans have the Mdot tattoo? or are any of you doing one for the first time thinking of getting one? If so, where to put it? I have one, on the right calf. I will try and remember to post a picture tomorrow when i get on the computer. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by CyborgQueenI'm not sure if I'll be heading outside this week or next. The fires at Mt. Charleston has the smoke blowing towards my house. Its so horrible!!! The winds are bringing the smoke towards the valley instead of the other way. Some of my friends live closer to Mt. Charleston and they're saying the air quality is poor and getting ashes in their yards. I was outside for a short time yesterday, and now I have a bit of a bad headache. No idea if its from the smoke...but I'm not gonna risk myself breathing in this stuff....trainer love this week and perhaps next week as well. Its just so surreal and sad. Stay safe and healthy! I will be volunteering at the tri club race (didn't pay my fees, so no races for me) on Saturday far away from the fires. Sorry about the fires, that is tough for you guys living in it. |

The last two months seem to be a wash for me. I have gotten my workouts in, but intensity has not been there and motivation has been lacking. Yesterday, I put a change to all that. I started a fund raising campaign in conjunction with my race. My 3 year old niece was diagnosed with type1 diabetes in March of this year and I felt that I can use her daily struggles as motivation while raising some money for research.Below is the face book page I started. If you are on facebook, like the page. My hope is to provide some education about Juvenile Diabetes while I share with friends and others my training struggles. I am also hoping that I can inspire some people to start exercising.https://www.facebook.com/pages/1406-Mile-challenge-for-Juvenile-Diabetes-Research/275863579219381 Good for you Eddie raising money for an excellent cause! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I've been a little worried about my training for my Oly on Saturday. I haven't done any really long or hard workouts since the duathlon 3 weeks ago (and since I tapered before that, we're really talking about at least 4 weeks). But I needed some recovery time after the duathlon, and then my sister got married and I got the stomach flu...I keep telling myself this week that there's nothing I can do about my endurance at this point, except make it worse by going into the race tired. But I'm actually looking forward to getting back on track next week. HIM training plan starts Tuesday! Good luck to everyone else racing this weekend! Jaime |
