I find that about a half US size up for me keeps me from getting blackened toenails. It helps too to get wide width shoes for my Fred Flintsone feet. As you run longer distances and more, your feet will swell, so you need a bit more room. There are also special ways to lace your shoes to keep the heel from sliding forward and causing impact between your toes and the inside of the shoe you can just google running laces. Lots of ways to lace shoes to deal with different issues.

yes, I wear slightly larger and wider running shoes, and I do the lace thingie (although my laces are elastic and I can't stand tightening them up to hard, foot gets numb after 10 minutes)

I did a pretty easy 64' Z2 (ish) spin today just to get the legs moving a bit after three days riding hours in a cramped Egyptian minibus--if you're taller than about 5'3", traveling in an Egyptian vehicle is a bit of a folding act--after several days, all of me is sore and cramped up.

Ride felt pretty good, although there wasn't a lot of substance to it.

Nat—my experience is the “walk like an Egyptian” translates into roughly as slowly as humanly possible while 4-5 abreast with arms linked to create an impenetrable wall no one can pass around.

Tried swim run yesterday with some peeps from my running club. A short course, 1k run and 330m swim which we completed 3 to 4 times.

That was quite fun. Strange to swim with your shoes on at first. I have no intention of doing races in that (not this year anyway) but I will go and do this every week and log it as swim training.

Today I NEED to do some strength, haven’t been very good lately. Then long ride tomorrow and long run on Sunday. Probably a swim or two.

Have a great weekend all!

Wait…swimming with your shoes on? Then running again? No way for me—I HATE running in wet shoes.

Actually, it's not as bad as I thought. Depends on the shoes I guess but the ones I used are very light and did not get heavy when wet.

It was pretty hot yesterday and really nice alternating swimming and running, didn't get too hot from running or too bored from swimming.

HM in the books!! 8:14 faster than my goal and 19:48 PR…and the course was long, according to my watch (13.2mi).

Good things:
1.) steady pace the entire race, no walking at all, not even water stations
2.) felt strong the whole race
3.) porta potties had flush toilets and running water with sinks

Bad things:
1.) mango flavored nutrition at aid stations (barf!!)
2.) warm water at aid stations
3.) no post-race food at all (I mean, this one could be a plus too, because the Movenpick ice cream shop was open)

Home now with calf sleeves on, laundry going, and feet propped up. Good day overall!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

After spending the afternoon on the couch and the night tossing and turning because I just couldn’t get my legs comfortable after the race yesterday, I was up early for 3500yds in the pool this morning. They get surprisingly good. Now I’m rehydrating and contemplating my poor life choices as I face an afternoon on the trainer—4 hours of Z2/Z1. Not sure I’m mentally ready for that. Legs will be okay, but my sanity might not make it.

Yes…all of the above!! Depends on the workout, but for long low power workouts I usually either read a book or watch something engaging (like sports). Sometimes I do sudoku or crossword puzzles on my phone, but those tend to be more difficult the harder the workout gets.

As expected, four hours on the trainer was super mentally draining. But…now it is done.

2500 yds in the pool this morning, followed by a little strength training this afternoon (while I frantically try to get my three online courses for the summer sorted and posted--they start on Monday!--so far I'm sitting at 3+ hours for one course packet to upload).

Tomorrow is a much needed rest day.

@Gretchen. COngrats on another huge PB. Just under 20 minutes is a huge number for a half mary. Awesome work.

And backing it up with a 4 hour trainer ride? That is hardcore. I think my best is about 2 1/2 (planning to do up to 3hr this time around) and that's almost impossible. So 4 hours, and going in already fatigued from your run is mind blowing.

@Nathalie. Swim run sounds like a lot of fun. I'm not sure how I would cope running in a wetsuit though. I overheat enough on teh run as it is let alone adding the neoprene. I think I've seen online people drill drain holes in the bottom of a pair of running shoes for the swim run events. Maybe something to think about if you're planning to do lots of them.

I did not finish off the week as well as planned (from a training perspective at least) Long story short, thursday - sunday I did about 30 minutes running a day. Both myself and the newly crowned Mr 6, were thoroughly spoilt, and it's been a very lovely few days but happy to be back to normal life. The good news was I was able to run 4 days in a row, all short and easy, but have no real issues with the damaged toe. Probably wasn't the smartest plan, but got away with it.

Ended up with 6 hours total.

Swim, x1, 1000m, 30 min
Bike, x3, 3hr 30 min
Run, x4, 2 hour

Started the new week with 60 minute trainer ride with 10x1' Z5 'hill repeats'

Ooo, almost forgot.

No, I did not get a $5k plus treadmill for my birthday. But Mrs Bullfrog did get me a stryd running 'powermeter' So, hopefully that will give me some better feedback for indoor runs, and more importantly using power could/should help me train smarter, and at appropriate efforts indoors and on the road.

Does anyone have one? I have a lot to learn about how and when to use it to actually get useful info out. But its going to be interesting. And my inner geek loves the idea of more data (useful or not)

Nice to hear from you Andrew, glad you had nice birthday celebrations, even if it meant less training. Good news about the toe!

Sorry you didn’t get the $5k treadmill but at least you got som training related goodies I am sure someone here will know what a stryd thingie is, and how to use it. As you know, I am not into numbers and train using the feeling method, nothing more than feelings (could be a song, that).

Had a pretty solid week
2x Swim 2502 m 1 hour (just swimming once and 1 swim run)
1 x Bike 50k, 2:08 hours
2 x ‘long’ runs plus 1 swim run and 2 brwim runs, total 4:55 hours

Feels a little light on the bike, guess I need to focus more on that this week.

Have a great week BDAS!

Andrew--happy belated birthday! Sounds like you had a good one! As for run power...sorry, no ideas for you. I use HR on the run, but working with power on the bike has really improved my skills, so hopefully you see similar results!

As for me...rest day today...I started it with a gloriously chill lie in until 6:45, then coffee on the balcony (decidedly less serene since I moved back downtown) and a late roll into the office. Later today, the fun off day "gettin' stuff done" phase...haircut and grocery shopping, both of which will take about 3 times as long as they would at home because...Egypt. Oh well!

Originally posted by nicole14e Hi everyone! See below for my race reports! Overall I'm extremely pleased with my performance, especially considering I tacked on the Oly just a few days before. The event was very well run, with just a few slight adjustments I would recommend. Definitely need to work on my nutrition for an Oly though! I think this is the first one I finished without any major issues (one I swam too far and the other I got a flat tire).

I wrote it over in your race reports but that is an awesome weekend of racing.  You know you qualified for Nationals both in the Oly and Sprint, right (for 2023 and 2024 because of the timing)?  Great work, Nicole.  And if you get don't get kicked in the water during a Kinetic race you're not trying.

RE:  Nutrition:  I know Andrew also made some comments above...I'll pile on with it's so "experiment of one" for people racing the shorter distance races both in what you eat / drink when you first wake up and what you consume right before and during the race.  I don't eat ANY solid food after like 5 AM on race day, and some people eat a four-course meal during an Oly.  Practice racing (or simulated racing) is the only way to nail this down and even then sometimes our tummies just don't cooperate.
