Master 2235 Pacific Northwest | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Good morning.......! Rob, congrats on your HIM, great race--glad you are ok! And awesome that you are having a son in a month, they are so much fun (I have two, so I am biased on sons). Kaz, it's your race weekend! Yaaaaay! We are all pulling for you and I know I will be watching the site for a report after you are done. Swim question for you guys.... I only recently started swimming laps in a pool, for the first time in many years. I usually just swim in the lake, but this year I joined a gym so I can try to improve my weak event all winter. It is a 25 meter salt water pool. My past few swims have averaged around 2:15 for 100 m, some a teeny bit less, some a bit more. Yesterday I purchased a new Nike swimming suit, made for swimming, instead of one that was made for hanging at the beach, as most of my other suits are. It's sleek and very tight, especially on top! So, I had a short period of time to hop in the pool before I picked up my son at school yesterday...and on the first 100 m split was shocked to see 1:59! I didn't sprint or do anything different. The next 5 100s were each much better than the last time I was in the water.....I think the slowest was about 2:13 but the rest were faster. I am wondering if the suit had anything to do with it, since it's snugness greatly reduced the amount of drag from my bust....usually in my old suit I could feel my top half moving around when I turned to breathe....do you think a suit could make this much difference? I also think there is the fact that I am starting to get a bit more comfortable lap swimming....anyway, thought I'd get some thoughts on that. Happy Friday!! Have a great weekend. Who else is racing besides Kazho? |

I have to take advantage of any questions I can answer because I am usually clueless on most Tri related "stuff". I switched to swim jammers instead of the over sized beach shorts I usually wear. The first time I wore the jammers my 500 time went from a p.b. of 9:07 to 8:30. I was shocked. I thought I missed calculated my laps but every 500 since then has been under 9:00 minutes. Now if I could only figure out some good swimming form. |

Expert 844 | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED I agree with AAron (and I look better than him in the jammers, he stuffs his with a tuna can). Also, the salt water is very bouyant and could be helping a little, like wearing a wet suit in open water.... |

II'd agree with you (on the salt water issue, can't speak for the tuna can effect), except for the fact that my only recorded swim times are in the same pool.... |

Veteran 219 Russell, KS | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED My time in the pool sucks because I don't know how to do a flip turn. And, my theory is that you don't get to push off and cheat when you're in the open water, but you do in the pool, so it seems that you skew your time faster because of that. Should I learn how to flip turn? |

And, my theory is that you don't get to push off and cheat when you're in the open water, but you do in the pool, so it seems that you skew your time faster because of that. Should I learn how to flip turn? I've seen two opposite ideas on it - one is exactly your thought, and the other is that if you stop at the side then push off, you're getting an extra breath. Your time won't be as fast as a flip turn, and you won't be cheating with a strong push off, but you may be cheating with the pause and breath. I do think that a stronger push off gets you going faster which also gets you used to swimming faster. Personally, I don't think as either way as cheating. You're going to get your technique and practice while your actually swimming, not at the turns. I can do a flip, and I do occasionally, but typically I don't because of not wanting the push off benefit. Besides, I'm only comparing my times to myself, so if I see an improvement in my lap time, as long as my turn method is the same, it doesn't matter how I turned. You ought to try to learn to flip anyway. You might find yourself signing up for a tri in a pool, so you'll definitely want to do it then, plus they look cool! |

Veteran 219 Russell, KS | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED This is not a triathlon question. Yesterday, I realized I'm burned out of my job, and I really don't care about anything. I'm hoping this is just part of the "I-just-got-separated-from-my-marriage" thing, and will go away. But I don't feel depressed about it. I just don't care. Did anyone else go through this when they got divorced? And where is an online calendar to find all the tris in my area? Edited by grnidone 2007-10-11 4:39 AM |

Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Yes, I went through the same "I don't care" thing with my divorce... but I seriously didn't care much anyway. I looked for another job and that helped out a bit. I can't honestly say if it was the divorce or not.... And for the second question... www.trifind.com. Everything there you could possibly want. |

Expert 844 | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED I definitely felt that way. I started drinking way too much too. I think this tri stuff and meeting my fiancee saved me from serious trouble.... Surround yourself with good people that make positive choices. That's my 2 cents. |

Veteran 219 Russell, KS | Subject: RE: triOK's Group - CLOSED Thanks, you guys. I think I'm also going to start on my anti-depressant meds again. I was going to go on a bike ride this morning, but I think my time (today) is better spent getting my new place moved into, sorted out and organized. I think getting rid of the moving boxes will help my attitude a lot. I'll hit that hard today and then tomorrow do a serious workout. |
