Yay, race reports!! Suzy and Leslie, you guys are awesome -- fabulous races over the weekend.

Sorry I've been so MIA lately. It's partly the new job, which I sort of started this week. I'm shadowing another reporter all week so I won't be online much at all. After that, I have no clue how much time I'll have online. Anyway, other than that I've been just busy in general, and also a little lacking in motivation for the past week or so. I think (hope!) that's just a hormonal thing. *g*

Must be something in the water Erin - I have totally been lacking in the motivation area - whammy 1 - out for 5 days because of an ear infection, then - once I finally got over my ear infection, I just still couldn't get back into it

I finally ran tonight - it felt great

Good job with the run, Beth!  It's fun when it clicks!

I need input from you guys regarding running.  I've decided to aim for a half marathon in September and so far have run a max of 9  miles (a little less than 2 wks ago).  I am going to do a ten mile run tomorrow morning while the kids are in camp and am wondering about pace.  Should I just go with what is my normal/comfortable pace (generally around 8:45-9:00) or should I slow it down?  I have a HR monitor but don't know what to aim for yet as I am way too busy to read about how to figure that out.  Sad, but true!!!!! My route is pretty much totally flat on a gravel trail and road surface, mostly trail.

I appreciate your input!!  Wish you were all here to run with me, it would be way more fun.

Leslie

Go with normal/comfortable. It's considered a long run for half-mary training (which you know) so you shouldn't be puffing or out of breath at any point (although you might want to run the last two miles or so at the faster end of your comfy pace. If you paced correctly at the beginning--the slower end of your comfy pace--that should work out).

If you do feel yourself breathing quite hard and would find it difficult to carry on a conversation, slow down. Preferably don't let yourself get to that point.

You're an outstanding runner with very good base mileage. I don't know that you will actually need to "slow down" your training pace even for the long runs before your half-mary (but keep in mind, it won't hurt your performance if you do). And ... don't do your last long run any less than two weeks out. That is all.

Have a great run tomorrow!

Yanti's right, I think you'd be fine sticking to your normal pace.

That said, I did end up slowing down on my long runs (and eventually almost all of my runs), as suggested in several training plans. I've been using the McMillan Running Calculator, based on my 10k race pace, which puts my LSD pace at about 9:45-10:45. I think it's helped a lot, even if just mentally. My "normal" pace used to be about the same as yours, but by slowing down on my long runs I was able to stop stressing over whether or not I was "fast enough," which is a problem I have, and instead focus on just going slow and easy and building up the miles. Now I do probably 80 percent of my running at the slow pace. It certainly doesn't seem to have hurt my speed, because I'm a lot faster in races than I used to be. But it does feel like quite an adjustment. I also recommend, as Yanti said, doing a mile or two at the end at a faster pace.

Enjoy the long run!

Thanks for the advice--I tried to slow down but every time I felt slow and checked the pace it was 9-something.  A little bit of 10-something and some 8-something, gave me the final total for 10 miles of a 9.38 average.  I did speed up on the last mile or so, and actually was cruising along on the first mile too.  I am feeling pretty amazed at myself for running this far.  A year ago I was happy to finish 5k!!!  I can't help but think ahead to what I will be writing about in a year.....successful half iron?  We shall see.

I hope everybody is enjoying their day and getting out there to train and race.  This is a really busy race weekend across the country--who is competing this weekend?  I have a sprint tri on Sunday, the Seafair Tri.  Who else?

Congrats on the 10-miler, Leslie! That's a huge accomplishment.

I'm also doing an easy 5k tomorrow for Lucy.

On Sunday I have a half marathon. I'm hoping to head over to Vineman when it's over and catch some of Dolores' race!

Great job on the run, Leslie!

I'm doing the 5k tomorrow for Lucy, but that's all this weekend as far as races go. I'll be doing another 5k next Saturday in a neighboring community. Once I finish it, I don't currently have anything else scheduled until the tri in October. I'm still looking around to try and find at least one, perhaps two, more 5k races before then.

Welcome back to Cali, Yanti! Please give D. a big YOU CAN DO IT hug for me.

Dolores - Have a GREAT time at Vineman this weekend. I'm in complete awe that you're doing a 70.3 race.

Good luck to Dolores this weekend!!!!!

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather, Jeff! I was down a couple of weeks ago with the stomach bug that seems to be going around SoCal. If that's what you've had as well, you definitely have my full empathy!

Hey, gang. I was able to get over to Vineman after my half mary this morning and watched Dolores finish. She looked strong and awesome! I wish I'd been able to catch more of her race, but Yanti said her bike and swim were great. I'm so incredibly impressed with her! A Half Ironman! SO COOL!!

Leslie, looking forward to the RR. I'll write up my own sometime tonight.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Hello to the group!

I'm feeling much better, thanks for the well wishes. I'm so happy for Dolores, I can't wait to hear more about her race.

I'm re-starting my 10 week Oly plan this week culminating in my first race of the year on 9/28. I can't believe it will have been 11 months since I raced, crazy.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

no disrespect to the peoples of south dakota, but it was a little too quite when compared to los angeles. not bad weather. i would venture out each night to explore and i did get to see lots of nice scenery. mt rushmore was almost 500 miles to the west and just a little too far to visit. i still made the best of it and had a great time. but i am glad to return. lets go train!!!

HI EVERYBODY!!!!!

It's pickin' back up in here, soon it will be a Manatee party again. As I've said before, it will come and go ... but I know we're all here for each other in spirit!

DOLORES rocked the house at Vineman despite struggling with training/life balance, plantar fasciitis, and swim breathing in the months leading up to the race. She overcame all that to put together a super-smooth swim, speedy bike, and a solid run!

JEFF MUFFIN, I'm glad you're feeling better and more than glad you're in the thick of training again and gearing up for Pendleton and OC. I'm so sorry I will miss you at Pendleton again, though! More on my racing schedule below.

BETHIE LOVE, thanks so much for holding the Manatee Fort .

WILL!!! So good to hear from you and glad you had a great trip. I've never been to South Dakota and I've been around (or so the rumors go, heh heh).

ERIN BLEW AWAY the field at her half-mary ... and then showed up to cheer Dolores on! What a trooper.
