Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti and Lynn, Mentors of the Manatee Melee: FULL I am just training for my last tri of the season (not this weekend but next.) It will be my first Oly so, as long as I finish, a PR! I'm going to do a 5K this weekend then taper next week. I am supposed to do a half mary next weekend for my marathon training but I figure an OLY is a good and somewhat equal substitution. I have hit all of my other running milestones and am feeling really good about it. |

And what's everybody else up to? Quiet manatees ... me too, I've been training mad volumes with the combo of massive swim volume + IM training. Yep - I will cough up a race report at some point in the near future. Been kind of crazy at work, so not much time to do other things. I also believe I'm a report or two behind. Getting close to the end of the season - only one more tri for me this year. Sprint this weekend and then just some corporate cup racing (5k run sat, 12 mile bike race sunday, and a 1 mile sprint the following thursday). The bike race is a draft legal event so I'm hopeful for a great average (like 25 mph) since they combine it with the run to make a "dualathon". Also taking the kiddos this weekend - first time since Alcatraz. What's going on with everyone else??? |

Veteran 285 Austin | Subject: RE: Yanti and Lynn, Mentors of the Manatee Melee: FULL I've got tri #2 on Oct. 2nd, so that has been keeping me busy. I also finally joined the Masters swim program at my gym. I had been dragging my feet (mostly out of fear) on it, and happened to talk with one of the main instructors last week. It turns out that they have restructured the program with some of the week days including a division of slower/beginner swimmers and another group for the fast ones. As a result of all the changes, the slower group had only been having about 3-4 people coming. Figured it was time to take advantage of it and I went for it. I have been loving it. I've only gone twice, but both times I had a small thing pointed out that has made a big difference. It has also really helped me to have a structured swim and have someone watching me (makes me go a bit faster!). |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti and Lynn, Mentors of the Manatee Melee: FULL I got my first podium spot this weekend! I got second place in my AG (9th overall) for the iron girl 5K (very misleading name in my opinion.) I also got a PR, so overall it was a great race. One thing though, I was a little miserable during the race. I have been training for a marathon so racing at a 5K intensity, although I could do it, was very tough. I was breathing HARD and mentally, keeping my pace was a little tough. This got me thinking, do I need to add more intensity into my running or is it normal to feel that way during shorter races when you are training longer? I do most of my training runs very slowly, the only exception being hill intervals and track workouts (I alternate these workouts once a week) |

I used to be a uni-turner too! I just took some time to learn to breathe the other way and was really glad I did! It really didn't take long to break the habit. I find this especially useful in the open water swims. Edited by Asalzwed 2011-09-12 1:13 PM |

I do most of my training runs very slowly, the only exception being hill intervals and track workouts (I alternate these workouts once a week) You are awesome!!!!! To answer your question, if you're doing hills and especially track work, that's all the speed you need ... certainly for a marathon, and at this point also for a 5K. You were well-prepared for this race and you executed well. "A little miserable" and "very tough" are grand understatements for a 5K. I have no doubt you felt like crap, but unless you were in imminent danger of puking on a volunteer or bystander at the finish line, you didn't push it like a 5K can and (for optimal results, heck, yours were plenty good) ought to be pushed. Mile 1: Go out hard. Mile 2: Pray for death. Mile 3: Go harder. For someone who's training for her first marathon and just pulled out a ridiculously fast 5K, you did perfect. Now if you want to become primarily a 5K runner ... you might change your training slightly. But surprisingly, not that much. It would be a matter of adding more intensity. |

CAN you easily breathe to the right? Ahem, yes, the logs do seem to be empty-ish. Somehow filling in the online form seems to be more trouble after a workout than it really should be. I may just start filling in the workouts preemptively and assuming that I'll actually get them done (may even be motivational), which I mostly am. Log does not represent reality in this case. No need to let that keep you from leaving nice comments. As to your question, I hadn't tried breathing to the "wrong" side until just a few days ago (nothing over there I wanted to see anyway) and, no, I can't do it easily, if by easily you mean without fear of drowning.

I think training for a marathon can result in slower times in shorter races because we're generally not working on speed. That said, marathon training WILL make you stronger and if you include the hills and intervals like you are it will all translate into speed and power and endurance. KEEP ON KICKING IT!! |

As far as short vs long, my friend John Behme, completed the Louisville ironman in 9:57 or 9:59 this year. He does no do sprints "because they hurt too much". So - 5k vs marathon: not a comparison. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti and Lynn, Mentors of the Manatee Melee: FULL I don't have the official results yet but I was extremely happy with my race. Notably the swimming. By far it is my worst event and for the first time I felt really good about it. The water was SUPER choppy and they extended the swim course and shortened the run (so essentially made my worst sport the longest and best sport the shortest.) It was the longest swim I have done so far AND I was able to do the whole thing freestyle (averaged about 2 min 100s.) That alone made me one happy camper. The bike was a touch longer than a typical OLY as well. About 32 miles. but the kicker was in the first fifteen miles you gain about 1400 feet. Unofficially I got 10th overall and 5th in my div (20-29) but I'll do a race report once I get official results. |

That deserves a swim, bike, AND run glitter congrats! also ... 32 mi is NOT 'a touch' above Oly, that's a whole 10K over!!! 2:00/100 on the swim is great no matter what, but for you and those conditions ... AWESOME. Truly awesome! |

Been playing and staying away from the computer!!! Two weekends ago - Triathlon in Denver (Sprint completed in 1:18). Then corpoprate cup last weekend - 5k saturday (~26 minutes - predicted time and they won't tell us official time until Oct 6), then 12.5 mile bike time trial Sunday (killed that one - averaged around 22 mph based on asking someone what time it was after finishing - like the run, we won't know for a while). Also had a few swims for corporate cup. Eye opening thing there is swimming 50's as warm-up and feeling real good for the competition (swimming them in around 35-40 sec). Then watching my fellow relay swimmers flip over and start doing back strokes after completing 1/2 a length. It was fun, but just a little over a year and a half ago - I was there. Surprising how we can improve with some focus. Ran Jack Quinn's 5k club run last night and have a 1 mile all out run tomorrow night (another corporate cup event). Then I'm running the hot-to-trot 5k race this Sunday at the Pueblo Chili Festival. Then - recovery for 2 or 3 months while I focus on weight loss with less intensity workouts. That will be followed up with a few months of interval training with my focus on running speed improvements and prep for a local Half Mary in December. Around January - Final decision on St. George if spots are still available. How about you??? |
