i'm overtrained - at eating

With a specialty in oreos?

I'm more of a chocolate generalist - going with beer and a piece of chocolate right now, lots of antioxidants and probiotics and whatnot.  heck if if i eat enough i think i'll get faster.

You keep thinking that.  I'm having eggs, sweet potato and mango for dinner.

Hey Kelly/Scott

Some in the IM Tx thread in the Texas forum are saying they signed up TODAY for next year's race. Might want to check that out.

Current athletes for this year's race are eligible to sign up the day before the race.  Volunteers get head-of-the-line for the following year's race on Sunday and then it goes for general entry.

Ah, I see....I think one of the ones that said she signed up isn't racing, but is a volunteer (she said she was inspired by all the racers to sign up for next year today). Maybe they are taking them early this year, since it's the first year/maybe didn't sell out? No idea.

There are (at least) two schools of thought on this and Bryan and I fall on different sides of the line.

One side is that its beneficial to do "starvation" type workouts as fuel is not necessary for shorter efforts and training on an empty stomach helps you to better metabolize fat (Bryan correct me if I'm wrong).

The other side (which I fall on) is that you should always fuel workouts.  Even if you don't need the calories for the workout, you're training your gut to take in the calories for times when you'll need them (e.g. in a long course race).  Theory is that if you don't take in calories consistently while training, you're likely to have GI issues on the run of a long race.

I think the reasonable answer is to do what works for you (and do it consistently -- changing things up on race day is not a good idea).

Well, not really in so far is it is generally accepted that for efforts of duration under an hour, we have no caloric need of intake. That's fact. The concept that we "train" or GI buy ingesting more calories then required for a training session as it prepares us for race day is also not accurate. This concept is not starvation training. Starvation training is doing a 3 hour ride with zero calories which I never do or advocate. By doing shorter sessions reying on glycogen stores, there is research to suggest we stimulate fat oxidation better as opposed to spiking our blood sugar levels with pre-training meals. Again, only when the duration is short. So Kelly, you are confusing two very different subjects here. In regards to what I am trying to convey, I am correct. My suggestion, try it, see how you feel. 60 min., I pretty much can assure you it will be fine.

I always thought "training your gut" meant to try out different nutritions, amounts, timings, etc. during training. Basically, do your experimenting during your training period and not on race day.

That's right. You train with a form of nutrition and hydration you plan on racing with, not train your GI but to see how you tolerate the intake. All nutrition is pretty much the same. Sport nutrition companies will try and make nutrition so dense and complicated to drive business, but it's mostly noise. When you can KISS.

Having sat through several of the same nutritional sessions as Kel, I believe you guys are in agreement and thinking the same thing however Kel is just not being precise enough in her statements.

The 'gut training' is done through consumption 50% of the calories being expended and becomes more important as the length of the race increases.  You're never really taking in more calories than expended during a training session and the philosophical aspect is to always use race-day nutrition during every training session; regardless of duration.

I believe that you're also in agreement on the concept of starvation training being detrimental once you reach the point when the body has depleted its glycogen stores and must resort to metabolizing either fat or muscle for fuel.

you can take in the water ulike the 305, or other garmins.  there are lots of cool functions.  candidly, unless you want the cool functions and can live without the water proofiness, get th 105 (i think) which is the GPS/HR watch.  much less expensive and much smaller.  I have a 305 and if i had it to do over again id get teh 105 as i dont use 95% of the functions.  I would like somethign water proof as futzing with a watch in T1 at my HIM will be annoying.

14 miler done. pancakes, done.

Speaking of "training the gut" on Rudy's suggestion i tried EFS.  Lets just say i told my running to stay up wind.  I am sticking with GU/power gels and gatorade endurance.  I'll pack a pickle (he he) for the ride tomorrow to cut some of melted gummy bear taste.

I thnk people generally "over fuel".  me included, at least outside of training.  just think about the people who are sipping sports drink, protein drinks, etc. at the gym.  like you need a gatorade to get you through your zumba class followed by a smoothie after?  you just burned maybe 500 calories and consumed 400, minimum.  I just did a 14 mile run with 3 EFS slurps (300 calories) and 150 calories of sports drink.  At my size (6 1 225) i likely burn close to 1000 cal/hour running.  candidly, i could have done it with just water and would have been fine.

As Bryan and Kelly said, keep it simply and repeat.

Long ride this morning.  Having issues with my SI joint, so no running this weekend.  Back on the bike for another 20 miles or so tonight and then another 4 hours on the bike tomorrow (split 2 and 2).

Not happy with not running but also not happy with the unilateral lower back / hip pain.

This is why people get discouraged at losing weight.  They read all these articles on optimum ways to workout etc, etc, etc.  What they don't look at is weight lifters and athletes in general take the majority of thier calories in around that 1-2 hour period for the entire day.  People take in 400 cals and then eat more than they need to the rest of the day.  Lifters also use "supplements" to help their body better utilize food.

good thoughts to you and your SI joint.  lay on the floor on your stomach proped up on your elbows.  this decompresses the disc and should help a bit. tell shaun to give you a good butt rub.

Well, my day got derailed this morning.

Jasper, my 9.5 yr old black Lab, has a toe that the nail has curled out and under some. Today, he was bleeding from it and leaving bloody paw prints around...so off I go to the vet.

I wish I didn't go to the vet today...I'd rather not know. It's not like he was in any pain.

Anyway, his toe has cancer that deteriorated the bone. That leg's lymph node is enlarged.

They did xrays of the torso and found no Mets anywhere, but still concerned about that leg. She's going to call me later with an estimate for toe amputation.

The two choices right now are:
1. Come home with antibiotics and pain meds. Keep him comfortable and wait and see. Likely the cancer WILL spread over time, but who knows.

2. Remove the toe to make him more comfortable and help reduce the spreading of cancer.

Right now I'm on plan 1. We'll see the cost of surgery before I go that route. It's not like he's terribly active as it is, he just hangs around the house all day. But if pain comes in to it, that would be an option for me.

Getting it worked on by the massage therapist.  I can do a cortisone shot but only sparingly.  I don't want to waste my shot now when I may need it for LP.

Sorry to hear about your dog Steve.  I have a soft spot for all dogs.  One of our dogs has had tumors, so we've done surgery several times and chemo treatment.  It's so hard.

Hope Jasper's going to be ok.

Had an awesome run this morning for the charity run, felt soooo good. Slight stomach cramps towards the end but pushing on it did the trick. I turned the fun run into a brick session by riding my bike in for it (nice 30mins each way). Biggest event ive been in, 13,000 people, it was mad. I thought the bike ride would be my warm up but then we had an hours wait in the cold before the run so was pretty tight getting going, but damn it felt good =)

Does the BT training log automatically count your kilometres into your training plan? It doesnt look like it has for me, so i added it in as a seperate training session.

We're on our way. All that hydrating i did yesterday seems to have sweat off overnight! It's so hot and muggy here, I'm miserable! Hoping 2 hours north where we are headed is cooler.
