Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samyg - 2012-05-11 12:55 PM If I showed up like that to a Crit I might get lynched.ernestov - 2012-05-10 10:50 PM Tonight I did my first Criterium race, it is a bike race, very short (around thirty minutes) but very fun and intense. The field was 99% cyclists, the word triathlon is somewhat taboo in there so I went in full disguise with nothing that would say I do tri's, M dotted brand clothing, etc. I sat in the pack, trying to learn the mechanics of the race and how it works. The surging is UNREAL. Keeping up with the furious pace is a task and I also found myself boxed in during the last lap and I was desperate to break off the pack. Next time I'll go with teammates, it is a bit of a team effort since it requires to break away to win the race or place in the first five. I ended up like 20th in a field that was 35 deep. Not my best but I went to learn.
Sound very cool. 24.8 mph+ avg speed? I cannot ride 24.8 mph going downhill Mt. Everest, and being boxed out at those speeds must be a rush/panic attack/HR rising experience. Wonder what will happen if you show up for the next one with aerobars, a 1 piece IM logoed trisuit, and a swim cap (you know, to practice your T1).

![]() | ![]() Thanks Barry and Samy. Another complete rest day today. And carbo loading. This morning I had nothing yummy in the house that was full of carbs for breakfast. So I went to McDonald's on the way to work (I haven't eaten any fast food crap for months.) I got their nutritional pamphlet and found the highest carb item for breakfast. The Big Breakfast. 3 hotcakes, a biscuit, hash browns, a sausage patty and eggs. 111 carbs not counting the syrup (which I had). It was pretty yummy. Risotto for lunch. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dangremond - 2012-05-11 12:49 PM Please recall the rules of the May Challenge that you may count only one workout per discipline per day. If you run in two separate workouts (morning / evening) you only get credit for one workout. If you swim, bike and run you get three workouts. Swim, Bike, Run in the morning and Swim, Bike, Run in the evening - still only three workouts. Thanks. x2 on this. There's no prize for first place, nothing gained except fitness and speed in upcoming races, but please everyone, ONE workout per discipline PER DAY! For example if you ride your bike in the morning, then ride again in the evening you still only get one bike workout for the day in this contest. Also, perhaps if you notice someone who mistakenly added a workout where they shouldn't have, feel free to send them a PM reminding them. We're all able to make mistakes, I know if I added a workout and should not have I'd like to know! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() And finally, my breakthrough swim workout today! Yesterday's 3500 at 1:31 avg. was nice, but today's 2200 at a 1:25 avg was even better! 600 warmup at 1:32, 5x100 @ 1:15 with 25 seconds rest, 400 drills, 2x250 @ 1:25ish then 200 easy to finish and get over my 30 minute minimum. One of my goals for IM AZ is to finish the swim under one hour. It's probably not worth all the work to do it, especially when I have so much room for improvement on the bike and run, but I just think it would be a mental win for me to get me through the rest of the race. I don't know if I can make it happen, but I'll be darn close!

I wish I was able to swim like you do - did you swim as a kid, lessons, natural ability? I know my problem is twofold - volume and technique. I can hold a decent pace (by my standards) for 100M but I have no stamina. E will tell you that I have completely neglected the swim over the last two years and he is 100% correct. |

![]() | ![]() FoggyGoggles - 2012-05-11 4:42 PM After a guy boisterously announced his approach to "all of the Ironmans" he's completed, he jokingly told me "you don't look like a triathlete." It was a nice ice breaker and we ended up talking a bit about the two HIM's he's done. I listened mostly, but mentioned my HIM in July. I know people make assumptions all the time, but his assessment of me kind of irked me. I offered no inside to my abilities or previous races, but he had the stones to say "You probably won't finish in under 5:30. Probably close to 6:00." Mark my words: I will finish under 5:30. Adrian (and everyone else), When you sign up for a race, use the races button below to put it in the system. It makes it easier for the rest of us to stalk you. ![]() Also, if someone says "you don't look like a triathlete" and you're fat, that's an insult. But if he says it because you look like you pick up tractors for fun, that's a complement. Do you want to look like this? (As for the 6 hours comment, that's just rude. Did he know your times on any other races?) Edited by chris2533 2012-05-11 4:58 PM (lomdy08skinny.jpg) Attachments ---------------- lomdy08skinny.jpg (73KB - 17 downloads) |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris, best of luck tomorrow amigo! Is there a way to track you? What is your target time for tomorrow's race? Adrian, agree with Chris, I would take it as a complement and now you have extra motivation to come in under 5:30! Chris, what's wrong with the guy in your pic? LOL, because I've lost even more weight and am being teased by my "tri-friends" that I look like an X-ray. After my IM I hope to regain some of my weight/muscle/fat back! Today I'm finally down to 1 workout as part of my taper (woohoo!) - 40 min interval swim Have a great weekend everyone!

![]() things have been crazy. our eldest son was released from hospital after a 4 week stay last friday. he is now in a therapeutic wilderness program in utah. He is with a group of 4-5 staff with 8 adolescent boys who are being treated for mental health problems - major depression to generalized anxiety. each day the boys and their counsellors hike about 4 to 6 miles, sleep under tarps, start fires to cook food without matches, etc. Mid week for 2 days the boys do not camp and a lead ph.d. level psychologists visits the boys in the field and later in the week the counsellor has an hour long session with the parents. i am hopeful that through this program our son may regain his hope for the future. for those of you with younger kids, do not take anything for granted: love your kids, watch over them carefully, hug them everyday, and pray without ceasing. i am allowing myself to give unsolicited advice because - it is almost mother's day. i am almost 55 (june 7th), this past 5 weeks i feel like i have been on an emotional roller coaster. i will be in my first race of the season on sunday despite being very inconsistent with training since our son's 2nd hospitilization in 2012. i have tried to remain consistent but really have not done so well. i feel like i am losing ground with MAF because i have been inconsistent. i think i run slower now than before i started MAF. i may bike and swim about same speed. anyway, i will try to at least match time from last year. Good luck to others who are racing this weekend!! i do not mean to bring others down by my entry. does anyone have suggestions regarding run on sunday. during race do you still try to stay at MAF. i have not done any speedwork in almost 6 months. |

This was one of the worst weeks I've had at work in terms of work hours in a long while (home at 10pm and up training at 4:30 am is no way to live) and the next two weeks look even worse as I am scheduled to start peak training - my HIM is 4 weeks out from Sunday. It will be a struggle to find balance. Looking forward to some decent training this weekend. Chris - Best of luck with the Mary. Be safe. Gabe - Taper madness is the worst. You've put in the time and effort and are well prepared. Relish it. Ernesto - Had my Retul fit last Saturday. Spent close to 3 hrs at the shop. Most of the time felt like I was at physical therapy with all of the motion analysis and measurements. Made a couple adjustments with the cleats. Moved my seat down very slightly and fixed the position of aero bars - actually they were too long so I replaced them. Good news was that I was pretty well set up in the first place - the bike fits my build and I'm pretty aero. I was happy to see that I had very little wobble in my pedaling. Great experience and well worth the money. Oh yeah, that crit sounds sick.

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Adrian, nothing sweeter than to prove an arrogant wrong. You could finish under 5:30 today. @Andy, are you already signed up for Arizona or are you aiming for 2013? That was my first IM, beautiful venue and an "easy" Ironman. I will tell you this though, the swim is a minuscule part of an ultra endurance event such as a full, and even though swimming carries over to the other sports (aerobic capacity), you sure don't want to focus on that part of the training. Swimming is only 3 hours of 12 that you should train for an IM weekly. @Charlotte, great to see you here again! Nothing wrong with venting, do it freely, I feel a lot of empathy for you and I have to tell you this: a few years ago I went through a really rough time for about six or eight months and I was very depressed, eventually I gave birth to myself, after meditating a lot and "chewing" my problems I decided that life will bring you a lot of pain, but the misery part is optional. You are choosing to be strong and fight for your boy, and I'm sure he will overcome this chronic illness to be a positive and fulfilled individual. He will learn from mom! @Chris, pace, pace, pace. If you feel the achilles is giving you crap, pull out of the race IMMEDIATELY. Better to be sidelined for a few hours than for a few months. @Joe, glad to know your Retul was a positive experience. Believe or not, those little adjustments make a world of difference in watts output. You will notice after a few rides. About the Crits, you may want to try those as strong as you are, it is a great way to put an interval once a week. |
