I just feel like I'm in a funk or something. It's 80 and sunny outside today, so perhaps that will perk me up a little bit. |

Speed suits are actually useful mostly because tri suit have pockets and swimming in them creates lots of drag (which will slow you down considerably). Speed suits take that drag away. You don't need something facy, just something to cover up the pockets and low neck lines. |

How much time would it cost you in drag because of pockets at a race like IMTX? Genuinely curious. I shouldn't have spouted off my opinion like that. Like I said, I'm having a bad day and I probably ought to stay off the online forums at the moment Personally, I wouldn't buy one for a normal IM race, but I'm racing with pretty modest equipment as it is, and I wouldn't want to fork over the funds I do have for that. |

Probably a few seconds per 100 but when you're swimming 4400 yards it can add up and slow you down by a few minutes. Also more drag is the water is going to tire you out more, which you want to avoid as much as possible in a full. |

Good books along the same lines as hunger games. Also, Unwind is another good book by Neil Shunterman ... Read the summary on this one, one of a kind book! He also wrote the Everlost trology which is good. The Power of Six, second book to I Am Number Four is really good too. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED Is running at a faster rate than I'm currently running for Z1 runs but taking tiny walk intervals to get my HR down an acceptable way to use HR training? Or is it a way of going around the grueling work of running slowly (by slowly, I mean slowly..lol)? I don't need walk breaks....only to bring the HR back down. |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED So I needed to find a race for early/mid June. My buddy found one and really wanted me to do it with him. It's kind of a mid distance between the typical sprint around here and an Oly. So he said he's signing up last Tuesday. I haven't heard anything from him and the price goes up tomorrow so I registered. Turns out he has a wedding that day. So now I'm a bit irritated. Not that I didn't need something for that time but a courtesy email or something would have been appreciated. Grrrr. |

Or is it a way of going around the grueling work of running slowly (by slowly, I mean slowly..lol)? I don't need walk breaks....only to bring the HR back down. That's more like doing intervals. Late Feb 2011 is when I started HR training the right way. I would average 138-142 HR and my pace would be 9:50-10:15. By sticking with it I can now go out and have a 130-136 HR and do 9:00-9:15 pace. When I use these numbers it's for my long runs in both cases. So Sunday I ran 11.4 @9:13 pace and only 131 average HR. 14 months ago that HR would have produced 10:30+ pace. I get your point of view because I thought it was torture as well. However I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. You will see the results but it comes in spurts at least for me. I'll plateau for a bit and then wake up one morning ten seconds faster per mile for the same heart rate on the same or similar course. |

I understand that over time the pace will drop for the same HR. I have not experienced that yet but hope to in the future. I'm glad to hear you have had success with it!! I guess I worry that I won't be able to run fast when the time comes. The 5k this past weekend put some serious stress on my body, and I feel it is because I haven't run fast in a very long time. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 Part 2 - CLOSED You will have success, but you need to be PATIENT! You really only started back running and short bit ago after a total layoff from injury. It will come and is usually like turning on a lightswitch, it will just happen one day, and then you might go back and forth, but it will become consistent. Looks at Kelly's logs, she runs almost the same exact pace most days and keeps the HR down consistently. PATIENCE ... I have been doing this for MONTHS, since November actually. I am not saying it will take you months, I am more of the exception I think. |
