justinfss - 2013-01-18 12:42 PM Non-Triathlon question for all you parents... We had been having great nights with up to 6hrs sleep at a time, and now our 7 month old is up every 2-3 hrs without fail!

Any sleep tips? We are desperate!!!

There is power in the routine.  Laying down at the same time.  feeding at the same time prior to sleep.  And the tough one, knowing when to let cry and go to sleep, and when to check for diaper, and food.  Baby cry's when they have a wet diaper, need comfort, or need food.  figure out what they want, and it'll get better with time.

No magic cure here.  wish you well while you all get through it.

Oh, how I have felt your pain!  The fact that your little one has been such a good sleeper up to now is a good thing because it means that Dorothy will go back to sleeping for long stretches before too long.  The trick is to figure out what is different... Is she sick? Is she getting enough to eat? Is she learning to sit up and wakes up and wants to practice?  Does she miss her mommy/daddy? (My son went through this - I'd walk into the room and the crying would continue.  Heidi would come in and he'd start smiling).  Have her nap habits during the day changed?  If you've asked yourself all those questions with a no - then  you might want to go back and try ferberizing ... let her cry it out for progressively longer periods of time.

I know - nothing revolutionary... I hope sleep returns to your house ASAP!

Ha ha ha...sorry guys it never ends...just when you think you can rest your weary head and sleep they start driving, going on dates, meet a special someone and you are sure they are up to no good because you remember how you were at that age, you are awake waiting for them to come home safely, then they get married and come to visit with kids of their own that keep you up all night!

I am telling you, I know this as fact!  I only slept for a few years and I am exhausted now!

There's only a few times that I listen in life, but this sounds like wisdom right here!

1550 meter swim in the can followed by 9 mile run. At about 800m into the swim I thought to myself "doing triathlons is tough and takes a lot of work...regardless of sprint or Ironman". Run felt great as it was sunny and mid 50's.

To top it all off, I bought a Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp brew for my tri partner and he shared it with me. Good brew. I also bought a Breckenridge sample pack for this weekend. Have a good weekend everyone!

Kudos on the workout Dr. Bob.  Tramp stamp is a tasty beverage and Clown Shoes is a great brewery here in MASS.  Clementine (a wit) and Hoppy Feet are really good as well.  I had a Breckenridge Christmas Ale with my pizza tonight.  It was way too malty for me and I poured it down the drain after chocking down half of it.  Now I'm having a double wide IPA from Boulevard - much better.

Can we get a moment of silence in the BDAS...

Beer update.  I just finished the 22 oz. Double Bastard from Stone.  David, we have finally agreed on a beer critique.  Way too many malts to cover up the high alcohol content.  You were spot on for this one.  I've had better barleywine styles at that rate. 5/10 on the kevinbe appreciation scale.  still better than fruit. Kevin - I would have thought, with your love of malt that you might like double bastard... I guess it wasn't balanced enough for you.  Question - do you like beers with a balance of malts and hops - like a Celebration Ale from Sierra Nevada?  As for the Breckenridge going down the drain - might have to go to confession to get forgiveness for my sins... But that beer = 15% of my daily calories - Why finish it if I'm not loving every sip?

Alex - Your race should be starting any minute now... Sending you some good vibes!

Celebration is in my top 3 of off the shelf witer brews.  I don't know exactly how to explain what I like, but I think balance is good.  The Double B was way inbalanced.  I tasted mostly the 11.2%

My goals this week were

  1. start 10k plan - complete
  2. strength train - complete
  3. work out x5 days - complete
  4. be under 230 - fail!

So 3 out of 4 not bad. My diet failed this week, so no excuses. I have to buckle down and go true paleo for 30 days.

This week I joined a new gym that my buddy is in, and he is going to possibly do the tough mudder with me. So we are going to do  strength training 2x a week in the morning and run 3x times in the morning.

I also signed up for a 5k race in april, and did sign up for the Minnesota Tough Mudder in July.

Good Job everyone on getting your goals for the week.

Thanks!... I think we are going to write up a routine and paste it on the fridge... try to really stick to it!

But I am getting the picture... It's going to be an Ironman Situation...not a sprint! Wink

Great job on the goals man! I am with you on the weight...scale didnt even budge for me this week.  My wife made Paleo cookies...while delicious...I dont think really helped with the weight loss! Also I am not sure that the Caveman had access to coconut flour and/or baking soda!

I would love to do a tough mudder... a fellow I knew from high school did it this year and then posted pictures of him wearing the head band everywhere....At his office, on the subway, volunteering at an old folks home calling bingo! ( that was my favorite)

Where is the Minnesota race being held? my buddy here is from Duluth and maybe I could convince him to do a roadtrip!

Race update:

....wait for it.....

SMOKED IT! 34:26 11:07/mi, PR big time.  Thanks for all the help everyone it sure helped.  It was just a good all around event.  Well planned and the perfect way to get my feet wet back into everything.  After the race I was surprised how fast I recovered.  Within just a few minutes my HR was back down and I felt like a million bucks.  The event was planned perfectly and because of you folks my physical readiness was spot on.  That Thursday off and walk on Friday worked out perfect.

THANKS BDAS!!!

My ride on the trainer last night was only supposed to be easy warm up and cool down in the small gear and 40 easy pedaling in the big ring...I did a spinerval tape instead and rode an hour and 15 and pushed hard in the intervals...it felt great. Sore today so I am off to the pool.  My arms are sore from lifting so we'll see how it goes in the water.

Feels great to be on track again! Thanks for keeping me going boys...you know who you are!

Alex:  Outstanding job today.  34 minutes beat my first 5k last season and is a huge improvement over where you were a few weeks ago.  That is awesome!  And the best part - is that it's just the beginning.

I want to hear all about it - so be sure to fill out a race report in the Race Log tab.  Not only will everyone be able to read about the race - but you will have a record to refer back to when doing future races.  The more info you can add the better.

One again - congrats!  What are we drinking to celebrate?

Ian - As Meatloaf might have said - three out of four ain't bad!  I know you aren't happy about what you ate - and you should think of ways to be a more consistant eater next week.  But be proud of the progress you made this week.  Most americans don't work out three times a week and you did 2x that!

You will love the Tough Mudder.  I haven't done one - but I have a ton of friends who have and they can't stop talking about how much they love it.  From what I hear the camaraderie is great and the feeling of accomplishment is beyond belief when you are done.  Good luck to you!

2 bits of good news

My swim stroke is starting to get there.  I feel like I made real progress on my form this morning.  After weeks of feeling like I was just beginning again - so awkward and a real challenge to try to change something that you just thought you figured out.

And I went out for my walk around the track... tried a little jog and the pain was different, in a good way    the pain on impact is gone, but the area is just really tight.  I ended up jogging a couple of 200s, walking, and stretching, lots of stretching.  Then I hit the ice and ibuprofen when I got home - just in case.  I am optimistic about getting back on the trail soon.  It has been over a month

Weekly recap:

Crushed swim and spin today; 2,500 yards and 60 minutes of spin (~25 miles on the bike).  A good long burn today.

This week was recovery, so I dialed it back a bit; only 1 bike this week, mostly due to some last minute stuff at work.  My lifting's also jumped to a power-building phase, which is taking more out of me.  Nutrition is on track, and I'm down about 1.5 pounds, so a good result.

For next week:  back to 3x4 - three lifts, three runs, three swims, and three bikes.  I finally bought some thermal cycling tights, so hopefully one of those bikes will be outdoors.  I may wind up moving my recovery day to accommodate, but that should be fine.

Off to hang out with some friends, drink a little bit - nothing fancy, since the craft beer world is a strange, odd place to them, so I'm bringing a Shiner variety pack - just mainstream enough to not scare anyone.

Great job Alex on the race!

Elizabeth - Wow - that's great news.  So glad to hear that your hip is finally getting better and that your stroke is finally coming together.  It might be a good idea to really take it easy on your runs and to focus on your swimming as you recover.  If you play it right, you will be back in business before too long.

Jared - way to get in such a long walk.  Must have been nice to do it in such nice weather!

Charles - Great workout!  Those Shiners should taste pretty good!

I got out on a long walk with my wife today.  The weather was nice but still on the cold side.  We came home and I made us some whole wheat pizzas and now we are watching hockey.  My Flyers lost to Pittsburg.  I hate Pittsburg.

How happy are all you Canadians to have hockey back?
