Tri-Wog StL - 2009-06-04 11:29 AM Thoughts on the bottles......don't even consider carrying 5 bottles!

What I do...and this isn't for everyone but.......

start with water in the aero bottle and two bottles of IM Cocktail on the wing....and the bottle cage on the frame empty......if I need more water than I can drink at the aid stations (about every 10 miles or so) then I keep part of a bottle that I get from the aid in my fame cage......

Then at the Special Needs area, I pick up two fresh Cocktail bottles to replace the ones in the wing....(and if the ones I'm ditching aren't empty, I cuss myself to re-focus on nutrition).....this way the most I ever have on my bike is 2 full cocktail bottles and a partial water bottle...thereby saving 2 bottles worth of weight over what you were contemplating....

As for a freezer....ask the desk..NOW...call and ask for special consideration. I'm staying at one of the Marriott properties DT and I have arranged for a minifridge and they also took note of my IM participation (not sure what schwag that might bring but....it can't hurt!)

Paul

Thanks,  I agree with not carrying 5, but even in your scenario you'll have 2 on the wing, one aero and a possible half of water on the frame.  It's that extra half that made me add the wing rather than be limited to the aero and frame.  I don't expect to have 5 full at once, but like your plan of starting with the frame empty.

I was considering just one cocktail, mixed as a 3 hour bottle, and exchanged for new at SN.  But maybe carrying two bottles mixed thinner is better on the stomach?  Guess I'll try it all over the next 10 weeks and see what works.

I'd love to hear from others as you work through your nutrition experiments these next couple of months.

Remember at IMKY you have access to your special needs bag twice, on both the bike and run.

My nutrition:  Water in the aerodrink, Gatorade on the downtube, and gel flask on the top tube, and tubes of salt tablets by the aerodrink(rubber bands hold them).

Nutrition Per Hour: 6 salt tablets, one - two gels, one bottle of gatorade, and as much water as possible.

I'll have other things in my special needs bags like cliff bars, candy, etc.  You never know what you'll be in the mood for.

No reason to carry 5, 4 or even 3 bottles.  Just take two.  I have aero up front with water and one on the downtube with gatorade endurance.  Then just pick up what you need at the aid stations.  I did this both times for CDA and it worked great.  I know Lville will be hotter, so just make sure you have big bottles.    But the worst case scenario is that you would be out of liquid and 10 mile from the next aid station. . . but I seriously doubt that ever happens.

Try and train with what they provide on the course, then no need to bring your own drink mixes and cocktail specials.  Plus one less thing to worry about.

My wife sponsors me. . .I am just afraid she will pull the sponsorship at any moment.

Each of my cocktail bottles is mixed to 500 Cals and then diluted into the water in the aero drink.....the only plain water I use is from the aids....that's why I leave the frame empty and just add a bit of water to the aero at about every third aid station to make sure I can keep my cocktail diluted correctly.....
Now none of this includes my electrolytes or gel component becuase I was addressing you bottle question.....
I find at least that the thinner cocktail thatI sip almost constantly drains better from my system....but YMMV.....

I am so out of the loop here with sponsorships.....How did you get sponsored by a product?  I thought that was something that only the pros received...unless you are a pro and then excuse my ignorance!
Either way...glad to see your getting some free stuff!

I'm no pro by any means but I race a bunch and have some core products I feel strongly about.....for example I use Rudy sunglasses so much that I even had a prescription pair made for everyday use.....I really surfed their site for any "sponsoring options" - really I would have been happy with a T-shirt and a "thanks for using our products"......but now I am a "sponsored" "semi-pro" triathlete....oh the pressure!

A bunch of these "sponsor deals" are ways for vendors to promote their products to us "normal" people",  the benefit to the athlete is not overwhelming but when it's something I use and trust anyway I would say nice things about the products anyway so..........

If you want some specific tips...PM me or if you want a screaming deal on some Rudys PM me as well...

Georgian - 2009-06-04 11:02 AM

Mornin everybody.  Ran 5 on the street last night.  Felt good to get off the treadmill.

Still working out my IM nutrition plan.  Just bought a wing to add two bottles behind the seat, which will allow me to carry a total of 5 bottles if needed, although I'm concerned about the extra weight.  Ideally, at all times I'd have available a bottle of plain water, a bottle of G-E or Gu20, and a bottle of nutition "cocktail".  But without the wing I can only carry three, limited to one of each, and I want to be sure I don't run low.

Can any of you IM-Lou veterans give some insight on frequency and milemarkers for the bottle exchanges and bike special needs?  Specifically, I may start out light a couple bottles and then add bottles after the string of climbs in the first 30 miles.

Also, staying in the race hotels, I don't believe I'll have a way to freeze bottles.  Anyone have any ideas on how to get this done?  Bribe the chef?

Any thoughts?

I used Infinit and concentrated my bottles. Each one would last 3 hours. I had 2 with me on the bike. Each hour, I would add 1/3 of the bottle and a full bottle of water from an aid station into my aero bottle. Worked great. I kept the seat tube holder open for the occasional extra water bottle or GE if needed.

I guess I am a little suprised when I read that people carry that much with them on the bike when there are aid stations about every 10 miles. I start off with one bottle and one powerbar in the jersey and just live off the course. Only thing I put in special needs is an extra tire should I get a flat on the first half of the course to replace the one I keep on the bike. No flat, then I just keep going.

When you find a nutrition solution that works for you, you don't mess with it.......

As for me.....if I had to get as many calories and electrolytes from Gatorade E as I get from my IM cocktail........I would be p!ssing like the denizens of Churchill Downs ALL DAY LONG.......I would lose more time doing that (even while on the bike) as I will by carrying the two bottles of IM cocktail from T1........with my history of being able to run the whole IM marathon while others bonk....I ain't messing with it.......

FINALLY........got my first century ride in yesterday!!  What a great training weekend.....kinda unconventional but today I know that things are on track plan-wise for me to have a fine day in Louisville!
Unconventional, you ask??  Yes.....I raced a 1/4 IM race on Sat. in a very hilly race in Innsbrook and managed my first real podium finish in my AG (4th in M45-349) and then on Sunday, for recovery, I did that 100 mile bike ride......now I have as many centuries in this year as I had all LY for IMCdA.....and my legs feel "O.K." today!!

Hope all you folks are doing well in your plans as well!

So I have had IT band problems since the begining of April which has led to hamstring, foot and calf issues.  I have been painfully working through it and going to a PT who does active therapy.  My swimming is on and the bike is too, but my longest run was 4 miles (almost pain free) and that was tonight.  It is progress from last week though.  I am still planning to go to KY unless things regress by the end of June.  It is going to be a long summer!

Vent ON.  I'm having trouble getting motivated.  Even though I'm ahead of where I was last year, I feel like a slacker.  And my Training Partner is out for the season.  I just got to make it to the start line. Vent OFF.

I'm going to do a couple more sprints then I planned, just to break up the LBD's.

Hope everyone's training is going well.

What up fellow IMKY BT'ers?  Hope everyone's training is going well.  I can't believe how close we are coming!!!

Just to throw it out there... I know Amy is planning on heading down to Louisville at the end of the month and I am planning on being there as well.  Not exactly sure what the plan is going to be but I'm up for it!

I have decided to cancel the 3 sprints I had planned during the last 12 weeks of training. I've done 2 HIM's & 1 oly this season. I've kinda gotten used to suffering. I'll just sherpa for the wife at Irongirl Atlanta & keep grinding out those long, boring training days.

My training partners are also off for a while.  It makes it training a bit boring.   I also feel behind compared to last year, although I think I'm at about the same place.

Yeah it can be boring.  I now look forward to out sprinting the dogs.

I just checked my logs from last year and I don't feel so bad anymore.  Last year my first Century didn't come until July 5.
