TriAya - 2009-06-09 7:08 PM So exciting to quickly read the Manatee news and catch up. SO SORRY for my absence recently--going crazy packing up and moving across the world!

I'm actually typing this in Taipei, Taiwan where I'm in transit on my way to Indonesia.

Can't wait to get a little time to fully catch up on this thread and be able to respond.

Big warm sloppy thanks to those of you who have taken the time to msg and inspire. It means so much to me to have your support on this journey.

Yanti!!!!!

Hey Manatees! 2 swims are under my belt already! Nothing earthshaking, just a 1200 & a 1100. But 2 swims just the same. Also did some core work at the chiro's office. Learned the right & wrong way to do it.

Yanti, great hearing from you!. Hope you had a good trip.

Hey guys. Just a quick drive by to say hi. Mission accomplished.

Did a long bike ride today. It was a fundraising ride and was ALOT of fun--but I am very tired and going to bed now. Got back into town a few hours ago, washed up , ate, put the kids to bed, now time for mommy to head to bed, too. RR coming tomorrow-ish. I'll let you all know when it's up.

Nice job Amy!

are you and your bike still friends?

Yes, believe it or not, we are! It's only taken some 14 months, but I think now that we've had some quality time together our friendship will continue to grow and blossom. Of course, I haven't ridden since Saturday, so I'm not too sure if the saddle has anything to say about all of this or not! hehehe

Good to hear from you, Yanti! Hope the rest of your trip goes well and that you have time to check back in soon.

I have a question - what kind of "fuel" do you use and how often during a sprint Tri? I know I would like to use something. On my last 10K I used Accel Gel and liked it. I have also tried Clif Blocks, Stinger chews and LUNA moons for women during training. My fav are the Stinger brand for flavor and such, but I didn't notice as much energy boost from them.

Do you just keep plain water in your bottles or some kind of energy drink?

I read some posts today about taping gels to your top tube and/or cutting up energy bars and sticking them directly on the top tube???

Thanks
Sharie

In my past sprints - nothing special for nutrition.

Of course in the days leading up to the event I was very conscious that I was getting the best nutrition possible, and on race day a good solid breakfast and an apple shortly before the race (that's kinda my ritual) ... during - just lots of water, and a bottle of Gatorade I would take a few sips from in T1 and T2. It's a sprint - so you don't really need to worry about nutrition during the race ... as long as you are adequately prepared, adequately fueled leading up to it, and properly hydrated during the race - you should be good to go. ;-)

Morning Manatees!

I am back

I ended up taking yesterday off also because we had to pick my father up from the hospital and no one knew what time it would be so instead of working and having to leave, I just stayed left

If you want to read about an experienced cyclist's worst day ever on the bike check out my write up today about my ride Sunday.  Pretty bad

But - I have been in the pool 3 days in a row - that is some sort of June record I think

Hope all are well and staying out of trouble!

Have a great day.

for a sprint i usually have one bottle of gatorade and one of water - true speedsters may tell you this is too much (extra weight) , but i'm not that fast anyway, and i want the choice

for a sprint, i find that a couple of gu's one on  my bike ride, and one b4 the run is just about right -

Good morning, Manatees!

Sharie, I like to fill my 24 oz bike bottle with diluted gatorade. I mix it half & half with water & pour it over ice in the bottle. That works great for me. A sprint takes me close to 2 hrs to do, so I sip on that during the bike ride, which is the longest leg of the race, then I do usually only 1 water stop during the run, which takes me about 30 minutes for a sprint. Just my 2 cents.

My back is doing much better. It still feels fragile, so I really guard it when I move. I'm thinking about adding yoga or Pilates to my routine for more stretching and core work.

Bill, I'm so impressed with your swimming! Keep up the good work! I hope your dad is doing better.

Beth, how is your ankle? Are you able to bike at all?

I have the dentist again today, and then back to the chiro. I think I'll ask if I can get back to the gym next week to do some easy lifting. I'm gonna swim early today. I'm hoping to get in 1500 yds today. woohoo! A far cry from my 12 - 14 hr training weeks of last winter and spring.

Have a great day everyone!

Glad your back is better! and TR -- ankle? Wow, swimming Bill. Build on what you've started.

Beth --- our fearless leader -- how was the visit with the parents?

As far as sprint nutrition. Eat well the day(s) before (not overeat, but eat smart) Nothing new and nothing new on race day for sure. I usually have some hyrdration, ultima or zenergize to drink and water. I eat before going to the venue and then just a little bite of something, like 1/4 of a cliff bar before the swim (20 minutes or so). Then just water. I think the guideline is nutrition with calories for anything over an hour. Use your judgement based on your training. If you usually need something after an hour, take in something. Small sips and bites are best, according to my coach and everything else I read. Be careful of too many gels if you're not used to them. I found that one out the hard way. Not pleasant.

Happy Thursday group...

And remember to hydrate hydrate hydrate in the days leading up to the race .. that's the trick - don't drink gallons of water the morning of, you'll have to pee too much. ;-)

Edited to say: if you have specific ??'s re: nutrition - PM me. After all, I am a sports nutritionist, and I'd be happy to help!

Hi Manatees!

whew!  I'm glad today is over I'm even more glad tomorrow is Friday.  I've been putting in boatloads of hours to get a couple of projects ready to present to the new CEO.  The meeting was today.

He approved one of them and gave me a homework assignment for the second one - he said it's not off the table - so we'll see

the ankle  is doing fine, but no biking, I could do a spinning class - but not biking, i can't risk falling and twisting my ankle and fracturing it all the way through :/

the visit with my parents actually went really really well

thanks for asking

SpiritFire - 2009-06-06 11:28 AM Art & Beth - I thought of you guys at 4 a.m. this morning when I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. I thought - hmmm I should just get up and go for a run ... sleep is not going to happen now so why waste this time!?! (I got woken up by an earthquake, and I always have a hard time falling asleep after) ... But alas, I stayed in bed. I did not get up and go for a run like a good girl. My bed is just too comfy. ;-) It's always my goal every training season to become an early-morning workout person ... and it never happens. lol.

hehe!

Art and I'd have done the same thing

waidaminute, that didn't sound quite right

LOL!

Stacie - I read your race report. Sorry it didn't turn out the way you hoped but it could have been much worse, heatstroke kills people every year. Thank God for friends and med staff that knew what to do!

Bill - I read about your ride too. If that was me I would have bailed after the first wreck. I hope your father is doing well.

Spent 45 minutes on the trainer watching the '97 ironman. Tomorrow I'm headed to NY to my nephew's wedding so I probably won't get much done workout wise this weekend.

I'm sorry about that Stacie! So glad you made it through. I'll have to be watching out for that myself in a couple of weeks when I do a tri here ... it's 93 degrees at SIX IN THE MORNING and just gets hotter throughout the day. Plus the high humidity. With being undertrained and all that, I think my tri will just be a nice sightseeing tour

Yes, Manatees, I could use some support. I am very homesick! If any of you feel like calling me, e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send instructions on how to call for free

I did get some maintenance training in (at this point it's too late to BUILD training), but just to keep my legs and body moving so the tri won't be quite so painful.

It's great to see you all going strong and checking in!

Yanti! So glad to hear you made it to your new home - and all the best settling in. You're in my thoughts frequently - sending lots of white light and angels your way. ;-)

Injury update: My entire left leg and left lower back is buggered. And yes - that is the technical term my doctor used (he also says "ouchy" to describe how some things feel - 12 years of school, sheesh;-) ...

Not only is my left Achilles tearing and re-tearing and inflaming at an alarming rate, turns out my left hip/soas is really out of kilter as well. I've had ongoing ROM issues and off/on pain with my left hip for years and have often wondered if the two are related ... and it's what's been causing my left knee pain as well (and here I thought it was a bad bike fit) ...

I start physio this afternoon - I'm not looking forward to how much it might hurt, but I am quite looking forward to being HEALED! My doc says there is no reason I shouldn't be back to 100% in a few months ... keep those fingers crossed! I haven't been 100% in about 8 years!

I'm still running (cuz I'll NEVER give up running) albeit very slowly and gently, but the bike is not even an option for me at this point - it's too hard on my body. Swimming is just fine, as long as I watch my kick it doesn't seem to bother me.

How is everyone else doing re: injuries?

TR, I feel your pain!

I  got good news today. I can ride my mountain bike this weekend! My back is feeling much better, although a little fragile. Hopefully I'll be back in the gym with my trainer next week. I started core exercises this week and that seems to be going well. The new housekeeper starts Tuesday as per dr's orders. Haha!Wink

Glad to hear swimming is going well for you. I don't know how you're managing to run with that achilles, though.

Have a great weekend!

How am I running on this Achilles, you ask? Well - where do you think the tearing, re-tearing, and inflammation are coming from?! ;-)

I just LOVE running ... I can't stop. However - I have been told to stop. Not forever - just for a few weeks. I'm DYING inside already, and I ran yesterday! Eek. This is going to be a LONG couple of weeks.

OK - so - my physio (who, freakishly enough we are the same age and our fathers come from the same little town in Saskatchewan!) ... anyway she says that all of my left leg problems are coming from my BACK. My mid-back fascia is really screwed up ... so physio starts there - and works it's way down. My screwed up back is "leaking" into my hip, which is screwing up my stride and therefore my knee and finally my Achilles. Of it all - my Achilles is the least of her worries. It's the least injured, and the easiest to rehab. Huh.

I know all about Anatomy Trains, totally believe in them and think the body is fascinating ... but I had no idea - NO IDEA - I had any kind of back issues. Huh.

I must go to physio twice a week for the next month ... with acupuncture at least once a week prior to those visits.

Yeah - cuz I'm flush with cash and have a money-tree in my yard. I'll go - I'll do it .. but come on! Universe seriously! Cut me some financial slack already.
Or - maybe I'm meant to lose my house.

At least I won't hurt anymore! ;-)

The thigh bone's connected to the knee bone...That old song came into my mind. Pick me some of that money off your backyard tree, will ya?

Listen to your physio -- is that like a physical therapist? I hope you don't lose your house, TR! Let's think very green (as is money) thoughts.

So sounds like there's lots of potential healing going on. Anyone racing this weekend? Not moi.

Have a good one, everyone.

TR - WOW! You are going through a lot! I am sorry to hear about all the injuries, the inability to train and the money stuff. Sucks doesn't it! I know you do yoga and reiki and stuff....have you ever done much looking into the emotional/physical connection? I am always amazed at how closely connected they are for me. There are lots of books out there about it but my fav is "Feelings Buried Alive Never Die".

I have had a decent week of training although my nutritional challenges are still there. Today I tried a bike/run brick and instead of not having enough, I had too much! I didn't think it was a lot but I guess it was. I could not run at all!! I thought to myself that if that had been the actual race I would have made myself throw up and just get rid if it all! YUCK! I ended up walking most of the first mile and then tried to run again at the beginning of mile 2 and it went fine. I had only planned on doing 2 in this brick so quit there. So this is what I did....about 10oz of gatorade pre-ride, 1 Accel Gel (these have some protein in them) at mile 3.5, about a half bottle of water during the 24 minute bike (7 miles total), during transition I took one big swig of Gatorage cuz was worried about the heat. Well, there it is. Any thoughts on what I did wrong?

Quite a week here....well, actually it was the end of last week when we wrecked our son's pickup. Slimy, muddy roads after a rain, an almost flat front tire (didn't know this until after the fact), a downhill grade and a very heavy livestock trailer carrying 2 bulls and 4 horses. Muddy, rutty road grabbed that tire and pushed us sideways, the heavy trailer kept on coming and munch! Jack knifed into the drivers side. Still waiting to hear from the insurance adjuster on it, but it was 18yo ds's pickup that he just bought from his uncle! He was pretty upset.

And then my desktop fried the other day. Not sure what it is, but think it is the power supply. Dell won't cover it because I told them it was raining! Hmmm...should have kept my mouth shut! I think I will try to replace the power supply myself.

So TR....that money tree....send some my way too!

Oh yeah....I got my first wetsuit swim in!! What a kick it was, but I don't think I will be ready for the open water in my Tri. I hope to go to an actual race practice tomorrow and that will be the deciding factor. I just think I will be more confident in the pool this time.

Sharie

p.s. TR I keep forgetting to say that you are welcome here at the ranch anytime!
