itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-05-09 11:59 AM Just really quick before I get on the plane to go home...finished (whew!)...goal was under 2:30...chip time was 2:10:40...woot! Arlington is MUCH flatter than Camden, ME.

Will write a race report tomorrow. Had a great time. Thanks for all the encouragement.

Awesome race. 20min under your goal is amazing.

Warren - I am very sorry about your friends loss.  Anytime a child leaves this earth it is a tragedy, you just have to believe that God had a better plan for them and it sounds like that is how the parents are looking at it.  I'm sure today was especially hard for the mom.

Jennifer - happy mother's day and GREAT RACE!!  Awesome job!

Rene - no surprises anymore, you are one damn good tri'athlete man!  Incredible job on your first tri!!

Bill - I hate the gym, never went in my life until last Dec when I decide to give this a tri, so I had to go to swim, I hated it at first then I got used to it.  I still dread the time wasted and going, but once I'm there I love to swim.  I do understand what you are saying though, sometimes its mentally tough warming up, but like you said once you get warmed up, you start to feel smooth and then it is enjoyable.  All I can say is just keep playing over the tape that you don't like to swim, I have tried to change the way I view the gym and feel better about going now.

Nice job Jennifer.  You smoked your goal time!!!!

I feel the same way about cycling as you do swimming.   I know it's gonna be such huge chunk of time and don't really look foward to time in the saddle.   But once I am on the road it is the most enjoyable and relaxing part of training.

I know it's corny - but it bears repeating...you all encouraged me to even give this a try...thanks so much. It made a HUGE difference in my performance. Thank you.

I've been thinking a lot about swimming and how to get motivated (and help Bill get motivated) to swim. I really agree with what Matt said about changing your mindset. I have started to look forward to swimming because of the rest it provides for my biking and running muscles. I am looking forward to getting into the water this afternoon to get the blood flowing in my achy muscles and stretching out a bit more than I can do on land. I am still a brick in the water - but I'm trying to remember that the swim gets me to the bike and run.

Good points Jennifer and Matt (and everyone).  I don't think I really hate swimming as much as I let on.  I had a really good swim workout at the Y at lunchtime today.  I'm starting to see my pace pick up and I'm close to breaking that 2 min/100 yd barrier that's been difficult for me to get to.  So I'm starting to see some positive feedback from all my training and that in itself is motivating.

I wish there was a place to get in an OWS near my house or work.  There's literally NOTHING within an hour.  That would be a nice way to mix things up.

So thanks to you all, I laid in bed at 5:00 and decided to skip my swim workout this morning - too far to drive and 14 weeks of swimming at the lake should be enough, right?  Cool

Hahaha, how do you like that rationalization and transferal?

Excellent! But seriously - I think it is really important to listen to your body...if there was a niggling (that's a word!) doubt in your subconscious -- it is a good thing...besides 14 weeks of swimming is PLENTY. This does bring up a question I have been considering - do you do any sort of drills while OWS - or do you just cover distance?

Did you all realize that Matt has the first HIM of the season (for our group) this weekend? Holy cow! That came up quick. Best wishes!

And to answer those who are asking about me entering a HIM now that I've finished the half marathon...not this year...maybe next year (I would like to hear Warren's feedback about Pumpkinman and Mooseman)...the jump from sprint to Oly this year is about what I can handle.

Jennifer, I'm doing Pumkinman half, and the Timberman sprint.  No Mooseman - the water is too cold in Newfound for me to do a half in June!

I think you're more ready for an HIM than I am!

And Matt, I guess your half snuck up on me and I didn't realize it was this weekend.  Go get it.  We'll be watching the race updates.

And in the karma category, I got an email yesterday (which I didn't read) from the people who run the pool I swim at - my high school alma mater - and the pool was closed this morning for some maintenance!  I guess my body knew that and wanted to save the gas!

Here's my race plan.  Let me know what you think.

IRONMAN 70.3 FLORIDA RACE PLAN

Goals:
• It’s simple: finish!
• Pace, moderate efforts at beginning of each leg
• Have fun and don’t worry about time
• Race my own race, don’t worry about other athletes (especially when they pass me)

Key For Success:
• Good pacing in each leg and no bonking
• Stay healthy, no upset stomach or cramps
• Don’t forget to refuel and hydrate

Swim – 1.2 miles

Goal: 40 minutes

Key for Success:
• Relax, avoid anxious thoughts
• Find a good consistent rhythm
• Sight frequently and avoid zigzags
• Breathe often to avoid hyper-ventilating

T1:

Goal: 5 minutes

Tasks:
• Bike shoes on
• Garmin on
• Sunscreen
• Helmet & sunglasses
• Quick hydration (gel?)

Bike – 56 miles

Goal: 3.5 hours (16 mph average)

Keys for Success:
• Pace, pace, pace – aim for negative split
• Hydrate with Gatorade Endurance/H2O every other drink
• Gels every 45 minutes (4 total)
• Be safe, avoid accidents
• Aero is the way to go

T2:

Goal: 5 minutes

Tasks:
• Rack bike
• Bike shoes off, socks and run shoes on
• Helmet off, ball cap on
• Wear race belt
• Quick hydration (1-2 gels?)

Run – 13.1Miles

Goal: 2 hours, 11 minutes (10 minute / mile average)

Keys to Success
• Smooth breathing - deep, long exhale
• Hydrate at every aid station
• Gel spaced evenly (1-2 total)
• Focus on form: stand proud, slight lean forward, mid-foot strike
• Don’t over-do it on hills

Planned Time: 6 hours 30 minutes

If I finish, I accomplished my goal.  If I get under 7 hours, I'll be happy as heat/humidity is a big risk factor for me.  If I can run the entire half marathon, I'll be ecstatic.  If I get close to my planned time, I'll have achieved my stretch goal.

IRONMAN 70.3 FLORIDA RACE PLAN

This looks awesome Matt.  It does look like Sunday will be hot down there (high 80s) so the hydration and sunscreen will be key.

I've debated doing this one next year, and I know from a friend in Orlando (who golfed with us last week) that the bike course is fast but can be windy.  Aero and pace control will be key as you are clearly fit enough to really post a crazy time on the bike - but in the heat the cost may be very high.

And if the run is on the course he thinks it is, it's also fast and flat but pretty exposed in terms of sun/heat, so keep cool and hydrated.  You may want to prepare for foot issues (are there special needs bags in a half?) as the heat of the pavement and trails was another thing he mentioned.

Sounds like your time goals are perfect and absolutely in line with your training; the wildcard will be the heat.

I like the ones Jennifer pointed out - have fun, and finish.

I'd love to take all the credit, but I found this race plan on joe friel's blog by one of his AG athlete's he coached on a HIM.  I just updated it with my plan.

No drills here. Just swim. You can practice entering & exiting the water.

Do not rush the distance. No reason to go long.

Best of luck, Matt!  I think the agreement here is that you're going to kick some BOOOTY on this race.  You've got a great plan and you've done a spectacular job sticking to your training and nutrition plans.  For your first HIM, just go out there and have fun.  Go easy on the bike so you have lots of energy for the run.  That's where I made my mistake in my HIM last year... I finished, but the run was torture.  You'll need lots of fluids when it's that hot.

Best of luck to you and I can't wait to hear how it goes!

Matt - you will do great! Take it easy, enjoy the moment and HYDRATE. If you have your bib number, let us know and we can track you on ironman.com during the race.

From no tri's to a half in a short amount of time...with much focused training and dedication...you've definitely got this one in you.
