I'm on rest week as well.  I'm getting my legs all rested up for my half mary this Sunday.  I've been feeling great since Monday.

Anyways, I went for a morning swim today and boy was there a revelation...  I think everything just clicked today.  I usualy swim around 1:50-2min/100m over 400m and this morning I made it to 1:38/100m!!!!!  I was so excited!  Everything just clicked today.  I think my pull is so much better since I can feel every single one of them.  I had higher elbows too but there was still a drop on my on-breathing arm (left).  I can also felt  my pectoralis muscles working so I guess I was doing something right.   Definitely felt likeI was gliding and minimal to no zigzaging today.  Im asuming that I was also doing what they call the two-beat kick???  I don't know what it's called but I basically kicked on the side where the next stroke will be.  The kick was done before the arm something like right leg kick, right arm reach and pull then the left.  I felt balanced and didn't feel my legs dragging.

Hopefully I can repeat this morning on my next swim workouts...

This rest weeks are great!

Question for ya...Last week (week 10 of the plan) was a bike focused week.  Put in a lot of hours and ended up getting sick on Sunday and missing my 2 1/2 hour bike yesterday.  This week is a step back week, so nice and light workouts all week to recover a bit.  Should I go ahead and replace the short ride scheduled for tomorrow with the long ride that I should have done on Sunday?

What is your long ride this weekend? If it's a recovery ride, do the long ride then. Not during the week...you need the recovery.

Oops!  I didn't read this until after I went for the ride.   However, I am glad that I did.  I just decided to go out and cruise it.  Feels good to get some longer miles in the saddle.  Gonna get to that finish line for sure!  Now I will follow the plan this week and rest rest rest.

You and me are in the same place...I am gonna rest too in week 9.  You are smarter than me though, its so damn hard for me to follow the plan and rest.

Haha!  I am probably not smarter...it is just that being lazy comes easily for me.

diamondgirl1973 - 2011-02-01 11:06 AM Jessica-
You asked how I got into tri?  The seed was actually planted almost 13 years ago when I was in San Diego.  A fellow coworker did them.  I remember thinking that I would like to try, but I thought it was only for people who could be competitive, not amateurs like me.  A couple years back, I ran into a tri newbie.  She had just completed her first which was part of the Mermaid series in Cali.  That's when I realized any Joe Schmoe with the gumption could do one.  I was going to do the Sept Mermaid in San Jose, but I let life get in the way.  Then last year, my boss said he was going to train for a marathon, so I agreed to train for a tri.  After looking at all the distances, I figured I needed to try for the HIM in order to actually challenge myself.  Was on track to do the Tempe HIM in Oct when I did a last minute move from Cali to Chicago.  So here I am, training for a HIM and an IM this season...

Awesome, thanks for sharing. You must be pretty driven if it takes a HIM to make you feel challenged! I was terrified of my first triathlon, and it was a mini-sprint, lol!

Stefanie78 - 2011-02-01 7:42 PM Brand spanking new here... doing my first tri - HIM Providence, RI this July.  Have completed 3 marathons in the past 2 years, swam competitively thru HS and a year in college and just got a road bike in Nov that I'll be attaching aeros to...  As for the training, thought it was best to do a half marathon for fun and keep me moving thru the cold winter months, that's on Feb 27th. After that head first into the beg training plan posted on this site.  Stoked to have found a beginners group and I am positive I'll have questions/pains throughout...
My goal 6/6:30 we'll see how well the training goes and how my body holds up!

Welcome! Wishing you a great race later this month! Sounds like you are in great shape to take on your first triathlon!

Thanks JG and pops.  I'll do a race report on the same day of the race.

I think I got my swim times mixed up today.  I hit 400m in 6:05 which makes it 1:31/100m Surprised

I'm really up to something here...

That's VERY good!

My 100's are getting better, at 1:35, but there's no way I could sustain it for 400...or longer. 1:45 is closer to my endurace distances.

Great Job.

x2. Couldn't keep that pace. Did a mile this AM (1800 yds) and it worked out to 1:45/100 right on the nose.

Both are excellent...I'm a little bit slower.  Got a solid run in with very minimal knee pain this morning though

Hey Stefanie, welcome.  I'm doing the Half in PVD as well, so you and I will be doing the same training day for day!  With, of course, the minor shake ups necessary to fit life in between.  I wish you the best... just a couple more weeks and the training plan kicks in!

I haven't posted here for a while and thought I'd check in. I'm doing my first HIM in July, Vineman, and my training plan starts the last week of February. I'm looking forward to getting 'officially' going I'm readjusting the first couple of weeks because I'm doing my first marathon the first weekend of March. Not sure that was the best of plans but I'll make it work!

God damnit...new pain on the bike today.  Thought I'd take my days off of running/biking because of my knee and catch up on some strength/hip work but pain in my groin now today.  Think its from doing hip openers and ab/adduction in the weight room.  3 more days off of the bike...grr!

First day in three months that I've woken up and said to myself, I'm just flat out taking today off. I didn't sleep well, and was feelng a bit off, physically and mentally.

Now it's 9 am and I'm up, at school for parent conferences, and feeling better about the day. The little voice inside is saying, when you get home, it's 45 minutes on the bike and 5 miles of interval running in your future.

I was concerned this morning that I had been going too hard and that's why I felt bad. Now I'm convinced I just had a bad night's sleep.

Bring on the training!

Have you ever/do you use a foam roller? You can work out a lot of little aches and pains on that thing. Painful at the time but it has helped me out a lot! I know when I hit a recovery week I let up a little on s/b/r but  think of a million other ways to exercise. Yoga, strength training, hikes in the woods etc. I end up not letting my body really recover at all. Sounds like maybe that is what your going through.

Almost finished with week 1 of training and I didn't let the weather slow me down (yet anyway). Still have a bike ride to do tomorrow. Hopefully some of this ice and snow will melt so I can get outside!

Yeah that's exactly right.  I think most of me feeling out of shape/bad is mental.  It doesn't happen in 3 days.  I'd be way worse off if I didn't listen to my body and actually got injured but i'm still pretty frustrated.  1km TT in the pool now, then a rest day tomorrow and 10km TT run on sunday.

Well I completely f***ed up my 1000Yd TT today.  I went out way too hard but thought I was fine.  I am really disappointed but at least it's not race day.  I jumped in and swam the first 500 continuous at a pace of 1:30/100 (well actually just a shade under) then really needed breath at 500.  Flipped to my back for 30 seconds and swam on but let up considerably.  Then, at about 700 needed more breath.  Then, at 850 or so got a stomach cramp.  Ended up finishing the 1000yds in 19:34 but am a little bit pissed at myself.

Happy this wasn't race day, and that i'm back at my comp just thinking about it, but was really hoping for a better TT.

At what pace are you planning on running your 10k TT on Sunday? Not sure what week into the plan you are in but wondering the purpose of the run given the frustrating issues you have been dealing with.

I'm on week 9, meaning that I'm 11 into the plan.  I am planning on running the 10K at a 3/2s idea starting at 8min mi flat and after 4 mi speeding up to a shade below if I can.  I am running a half marathon next sun and am aiming for 1:45, or 8 minute miles.

The primary purpose of the run is that it's on the plan, and the secondary one is for practice at race pace for my half mary.  It does seem a bit aggressive and if I am not feeling well at any point in the run I definitely don't plan on "toughing it out".  Going to listen to my body but hoping that after just a swim today and a complete off day tomorrow with just some stretching, I'll be good to go.

Boy am I glad I put the HTFU hammer down on that bad night's rest I got last night. Just finished my brick (trainer for 45 min and 5 mile interval run) At about mile 3 of the run I felt something I'd never felt before.

I've never really struggled with running, but I've also never really felt lke a runner. I've lost about 12 lbs in the past 3 months of training and have been feeling better and better every day. So around mile 3, I had a mental epiphany, "....Hey you....you running on the treadmill....you're a runner. Your legs feel good, the annoying phantom pains here and ther are neither distracting nor concerning, you're having a good time - with lots of energy in the tank, and the 5 mile finish line is a joke." For the first time ever, I actually felt like, acted like, and thought like a runner.

You know I kind of think one of the cool things about triathlon training, as a newby, has been the influence of nutrition on my training. I've run a few HM's before, but you drink some water and gatorade during those and you're fine....so I thought. I've been reading about the nutritional needs of longer races and am beginning to test out those theories as I get into longer brick sessions. Well low and behold....they works! No doubt in my mind that proper nutrition during my HM's would have yielded much better results.....as I sit here in front of the tv eating chips and dip :-)

Last thing to say is that I wish the gosh darn snow would melt and the weather would warm up. I usually don't wish away days, but I'm getting pretty excited to get this new beast of a bike I built this winter out on the roads for some real mileage. It's gonna be a fun Spring!!!
