Welcome and good luck with your training! You have good times ahead: I loved medical school. Kate
Thanks Kate - After being out of school for a bit I'm so excited to go back. I'm just hoping to not have to give up training! Oh no! don't give up training...I look back (it was almost 17 years ago I started med school, yikes!) and wonder why in the world I wasn't doing triathlons back then...I actually had plenty of time then x2. Don't let my earlier post scare you. It gets tough sometimes to get everything in and sometimes the guilt of not studying takes over...but don't give up training in med school! Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went to the Multisport World Expo in Boston this weekend. Met Dave Scott and had a chance to talk to him for a bit and get a picture. That guy is in kick- shape still. You would never guess he was close to 57 years old. Hope some of his mojo rubbed off on me... |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Personally I find the RCV videos much harder than the real life courses. Instead I would highly recommend ERG videos that are compatible with computrainer. There is a Lake Placid ERG video that is a fantastic simulation of the course. Thanks for the advice. I just found out that I won a Computrainer from Racermate. I won the raffle at Ironman Louisville last summer. I was a little skeptical about actually receiving it but I just received an e-mail from Racermate with a tracking number. Apparently they had been trying to get a hold of me for some time. I guess the first thing I will purchase once I get my computrainer is the ERG IMLP video. |

I did have a nice conversation with Karen Smyers before our panel discussion. I also saw a "crew" from BT there video taping the seminars. Maybe they will be posting the videos on the site soon.Went to the Multisport World Expo in Boston this weekend. Met Dave Scott and had a chance to talk to him for a bit and get a picture. Hey Mindy... yes I don't want to paint a picture that life is a bed of roses and I do think the 3rd clinical year (and especially residency, ugh!!) are not compatible with IM training in my humble opinion. Good luck to you too! I really think this IM training will be an invaluable experience to you in your job in that when you are working 36 some odd hours you'll think, "Aw, I can do this, I did the IM!" Sorry other IM peeps if this is a hijack. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tri camp was fantastic even with my frame being wrecked and unable to ride. I rode 2 different rental bikes almost 24 hours in 6 days and did many long climbs 5-10 miles long with grades often in the 9-12% range. Funny it was warmer at home in MA Saturday than in Solvang and first day home it snowed. Weather was nice in Solvang but not warm only 1 or 2 days did it hit the 70s. Tour of California is having the Solvang TT again this year and we rode most of the course including Ballard Canyon. I was surprised how I felt better through the week of big time on the bike. I worked this out with my LBS and will be getting a new Ordu '10 frame hopefully next week after Fed Express delivers my ruined bike back home so they can move the parts to the new frame. ![]() ^^^^ kick a$$ week of biking, Kathy. And who knows, maybe the replacement frame will be even faster than the old one. ![]() I'm waiting for the scientific community to announce there has been a shift in the poles and the northeast is now the south arctic. And that this will officially be as warm as it gets all year. ![]() p.s. Come June and July I will be whining how hot and humid it is and how sunburnt I am ![]() Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-03-22 7:52 PM |

Ryan I am two weeks out from a HIM this weekend, so its gonna be a pretty big one. Is it strange that it has been getting colder in my area for the past 4 weeks?!?! Yeah, the weather channel is smoking crack. For real. They keep coming out with article after article about how it's actually been warmer than normal in the northeast. This dude's reference includes the whopping two days where it was semi-warm. http://wap.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/spring-colder-pattern_2011-03-22 I'm ready to visit the weather channel and help them pull their heads out of their a$$es . It has being a miserable, long, cold, snowy winter here on Long Island. The 80-year-old dudes at the YMCA don't even remember a worse winter!! Which is fine, it's a cold - long winter. Big whoop. But don't write articles denying the fact. W. T. F!!! ![]() March so far: Generally warm for most ![]() It's like the weather channel is playing a bad pre-April fools trick with these ridiculous articles. Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-03-25 6:45 PM |

I did well pacing slowly at first but by mile 10 of today's half my competitive side took over and I started to push it... I'll need to watch that to avoid any injuries! It was freezing in the low 30s this morning in DC but I'll take that over super heat any day! |

I have to do 3 hours today but I think I will go out in the 25 degree weather before I spend that long on a trainer. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm beginning to "enjoy" the trainer. It doesn't hurt having a computrainer to change things up from ride to ride though. About 2 1/2 on it yesterday, and 2 today. It was a shock to the lungs when I went out into the 30 degree air with at least a 15 mph wind after jumping off the bike. Is it Spring yet? |

It was a shock to the lungs when I went out into the 30 degree air with at least a 15 mph wind after jumping off the bike. Is it Spring yet? That is cold! I did a test this weekend with my shoes, socks, and booties. I kept my shoe buckles VERY loose, and just used the tightness of the booties to hold my feet in place in the shoes. My feet didn't go as numb! Seems that constriction in the shoes is causing more numb feet than just the cold. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today was cold with a little bit of snow on the ground. That combined with the tourists in town this time of year made it a good day for a trainer ride. I had to do 3 hours so I decided to finally pop in the Lake Placid Spinervals DVD. I've never seen the course so it helped to give a good visual representation of what to expect. It also helped put the descent and the later climbs in perspective as well. Although the commentary and coaching got a little repetitive (its 3 hours long tho) I thought it was very nicely done and helpful. I'll be going up over Memorial Day weekend to ride the course and this helped a lot... I definitely won't push too hard at the beginning knowing what's waiting at the end of the loop! I'm really going to need to work on some good bike handling skills for the descent. The fact that some of it is next to a guard rail looking over a drop off the side of the road looked a little scary. But there's plenty of time to practice leading up to the race. Hope everyone had a good weekend of training! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I decided to do my 3 hour ride outside today and I wish I wouldn't have. It was so cold I lost feeling in my hands and feet shortly after the ride started. I did an out and back and after turning around I realized how strong the wind was. The headwind for the last hour and a half took my average speed down to next to nothing and took all my energy. I was looking forward to a hot shower afterward but ended up not enjoying that either. As my numb feet started to gain feeling the pain I felt was almost unbearable. Definitely a workout to forget. |

The weather here in Michigan has just been brutal lately. If I want to get my training sessions done early, I have to do them in the early hours of the morning when the air hasn't warmed up yet. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I too live in MI, ~ 35 miles north of Grand Rapids and did the Kent City Ridge Run yesterday (15K of hills) and there were some places where you couldn't find any part of the road not covered with ice. Yet, I too would choose this over heat and humidity. Besides the unfriendly training weather, I have another problem that hasn't been mentioned. Although I don't think there is any answer for this, I am going to ask just in case someone has an answer I haven't tried. It has to do with bruised toes and toenails from running. Right now toes on both feet are so sore, I can't stand anything touching them. Usually by now, the toenails have fallen off bringing a little relief, but they are hanging around causing pain. I have tried different style shoes. different sizes, have been to a sports doc, had a custom insert made - nothing seems to help. Any ideas out there that has worked for anyone? |
