Haven't hit the bike yet (work has been insane this last week...again), but I did reach a goal this week that is important to me.  Just finished the long run (which I killed) to post 43 miles this week on foot.  Will try and hold this mileage for three weeks, possibly creeping up to 45-47.  I just love running this much, it's great.  So, my 10 miler today was done at 1:15.  39:40 (first  5), 35:22 (last 5).  I definitely have a sub 7 10k in me.  I decided to run really hard for mile 8-9 and ran a 6:40 and then held pace to a final 7:05.  I didn't hit my LT on the last 5 either.  So excited!!!

jgerbodegrant - 2011-02-05 7:13 AM I have used the carbones, but not for any extended period of time.  I really liked them and have heard almost 100% positive reviews from friends who also ride them.  The SRAM wheels are good, but heavy.  Maybe you won't have such a problem because you won't be hitting the hills every day, but they when you are talking momentum, they are a significantly heavier wheel at 2030 a set...versus the 1740 for the carbones.  I think you can get the srams for around 1100 and the carbones for less than a grand.  And to answer your question about the rim depth, yes, you will I would jump to say that you would ABSOLUTELY feel a difference in the wind.  If you think about it, you basically have two wheels with roughly 40 additional square inches of surface area for the wind to hit (assuming cross wind).  At 50 mph that's a pretty good additional force.

Thanks, that has a significant impact on my decision. I wasn't sure how much of a difference that centimeter would make, but I'd not looked at it in terms of extra surface area.

a touch over an hour on the trainer today. I picked up a trainer-specific tire, but have not mounted it yet 'cause I still only have one wheelset.

when I win the lottery and get to run away, I'll go somewhere with Masters Classes. The small pool here in town won't open until April or May, and the next closest one is about an hour away and has horrible hours and constantly closes.

Anyone ever use SRAM S60 or Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL wheels? I'm perfectly willing to go with something else, but right now those are the wheels I'm looking at the most. SRAMs are 60mm and I believe they're all-carbon (w/ alloy brake channel); Mavics are 50mm and just have a carbon hull. I don't know that I'd notice much of a difference, but maybe I would. Mostly I'll be riding relatively flat, straight roads, but the group rides go through some twisty mountain roads. Would one corner worse than the other? Also, winds here get pretty bad. A 20mph wind is pretty normal, and the Tour of the Gila last year had 80mph winds on the 1st amature stage (I didn't race, but my GF did and it was very hard on her). I don't expect to encounter winds THAT strong, let alone ride in them, but it illustrates how windy it can get in this region. Would the 50mm profile be better in 20-30mph winds, or would the 1cm difference really make a noticeable difference?

they are both good wheels. I've rode the mavics, not the SRAM (but from all i know they are very high quality).

At that wind speed it wont make much of a dif at all. The change in handling from a 404 to 808 is not all that much unless the wind is really gusting (much more problems from that than steady wind).
at 20-30mph things can be a bit twitchy no matter what, but the rear/front combo will matter a lot more than how deep a wheel is. IE you want the rear deeper than the front. A disk and 808 can actually be easier to handle than a pair of 404s or 808s, etc. this is why you often see wheelsets like a 90/60 or 808/404.

Been a pretty sedintary couple of days out here, mainly involving rain.  Lots of rain.  So much so that it's not really possible to get any kind of run in unfortunately.   Good news is that we are getting our flight information tomorrow and hopefully flying on Monday, and back stateside on the 11th or thereabouts.  Looking forward to it so that I can get into some steady training.  Glad to see everyone is doing well aside from a couple of flu's and knocks.

Had a great run/ride brick today.  Got about 60 miles on the bike, and a short 3 mile run that felt surprisingly good.  I was expecting a much more jello feeling since I was riding fairly hard.

Anyway...after my run, I was chatting with some guys from another group.  One of them being a local elite who's had some success internationally and has raced with the likes of Lieto, Macca, Crowie, etc.  He had some funny stories about the pros he shared and how intense they are on the race course.

There's been a few threads recently in the tri talk forum about how triathletes are the nicest people in the world...but man...if 10% of what this guy is saying is true...I can imagine that some of the pros/elites can really be a bunch of a-holes on the course...but he did admit that most of them off the course are great people.

Also keep in mind that with the alloy rims you can still use normal brake pads, but the rims with the carbon braking surface require special pads that dissipate heat more rapidly.

I've spoken with a couple of people about that exact aspect of the wheels, and that's why I've been limiting my browsing to the one's with the alloy brake channel, or brake path, whatever it's called.

I've also considered the different depths. I was thinking about a Flashpoint 80/60 combo, or S60/40 or 80/60, and all of those. Am I correct that the wind hitting the rear disk doesn't throw us off, it's when it pushes the wheel related to steering that we end up twitchy?

Yes, that is correct.

Having a deeper vs front wheel shifts the center of balance back under your weight more, improving relative handling.

some sort of 80/60 combo is going to be a fast setup.

Might want to also consider a disk cover for the rear on either plain training wheel or something like a 40/60mm rear.

on a training wheel you'll end up with a 100$ disk.

So a 60mm front (or 40, or 50, whatever it ends up being) and a training wheel w/ disk on the rear for races? On that, I could get an aero front wheel, and any ol' reputable rear, for my 2nd set? That'd be a lot less expensive, but my normally-suppressed vanity likes the look of matching aero wheels.
It'll be a little while before I get the wheels, so I have a lot of time to think about it.

Just got home from Philly, where I celebrated my 40th birthday with several forms of excess.  No way I'm making weight tomorrow.

Had a solid week of training last week--working on some goals for next week.  Today's goal: hydration.

5K today in 30:17.  Wanted to break 30 but it was slippery and pretty crowded at the starting line.  Not sure I would have broken it with perfect conditions either.  I focused on not going out to fast, and was able to negative split the race.  Happy with that.

Not a bad run all things considered!  My girlfriend and I went for about 45 minutes this morning and it was pretty much 60% glare ice.  There was a lot of tricky walking up and down the hills.  Glad we went, but it was nasty.  I need to get a pair of yaktrax or something like that.

I thought we were only talking about at 50 mph....my bad.  What was she doing riding in that wind in the first place!?  I really like my HED3's.  They are invincible in the wind!  Okay...not really...but they are pretty darn good.  You can usually find a used pair for around 1000.

Yeah...I felt the same way.  I'm still not sure that I'm going to race my sprints this year with my powertap, but if I do, I'm using the disc cover and my hed3 front.  It's a pretty cheap combo if you think about it, you can essentially get a fast enough race setup for less than $500.

Happy Monday to all.

Current Weight:  138 lbs. (gain 0.5 lb)

Training Goal:  Goals are still swim-focused for the month.  Timed mile swim week of 2/21 & would like 30-minutes or less, so I'll need to push my intervals.  Must have at least three solid swims this week.

Looking at the 2008 felt S32 seriously as this may be worth the jump that I can upgrade in the future

Awesome job with the negative split & smart to play it safe on the slick roads.  Do you have another 5K planned in Feb to get that PR?

Yes, within reason, you'll need to make sure your rear wheel is compatible with the cover (go to wheelbuilder.com ), but outside of that yep, that's it.

And FWIW if you want you get get some stickers made for the wheel that will match the original manufactures ones, and still be way under the cost of a aero rear wheel;-)

Nice job on the race! You'll get it next time.

My week is looking a lot lighter:-) May get out on the bike for the first time in a few months today, that should be interesting.
Running wise a bit lighter week and a half starting last thur and going till this coming sunday. Give my legs a bit of a break from the higher mileage and I'm going to try and break 17min for a 5k if the weather holds out.
If i can do that I should be in a pretty good place going into spring/.

We had lots of rain as well.  It rained most of Friday and then a lot of Saturday too.  When it wasn't raining on Saturday it was misting.  Since it was in the 30s/40s most of the day, I ended up doing my long ride on the trainer.  Fun times.

Yesterday was beautiful and I got in a nice run and did a million errands.

I'm starting to get excited/nervous about next weekend!

Weighed in at about 159 this morning.  Up a few pounds, but not bad considering the weekend.  My weight usually fluctuates a lot during these types of weekends, so I imagine I'll be back down to 157ish by Wednesday without even trying.

I have a question on outdoor running etiquette.  With the nicer weather we have been having I started doing some of my runs outside.  The road I have been running on is a 2 lane road with a lane on each side for parking, so basically a 4 lane road.  The outside lanes are parking only and if you drive in them you will get pulled over (know from experience).  We have been getting light snow the last few days and the only lanes that are plowed are the 2 inside lanes. This leaves the parking lanes very slick and not good to run on.  On my last 2 runs I have stayed on the edge of the plowed lane running against traffic.  It looks as if I am running down the middle of the lane. since very few people park on the street.  Cars do not want to give me any room when passing and have been crowding me into the slippery parking lane.  First one that did this was one of the cops.  I gave him the finger as he went by but I think he was to into his conversation on the phone and didn't even see me.  Today I had people honk at me and flash their headlights.  Keep in mind that in the 30 minute run I have seen a total of 25 cars most, I am in no way impeding traffic.

With all that, am I in the wrong?  I don't want to perpetuate any negative stereotypes that are out there.

187.5lbs today.  Up a little from last week, but I had a few chips yesterday, so it was to be expected.  I WILL be under 185lbs next Monday morning, and it will begin at the gym tonight.  No workout yesterday, except for shovelling another few feet of snow, and building a big sledding hill for the kids in our front yard!  It's like a 10-15ft high luge track

To the gym 5-6 times this week, getting ready for my first 5k next month, which will be my first race as a 30-year-old.  Last year, I placed 3rd in the same race, so I'd like to win it this year.  Looking to go under 22min... and under 20min in my dreams
