I'm currently on track for my biggest cycling month ever - all but one ride indoors.  So I'm pleased with myself on that front, although I did miss my ride this morning cause I couldn't get out of bed.  Early mornings don't really agree with me, and I always find it a bit of a struggle.  I've religiously followed Jorge's winter program and seen my watts increase, so I'm hoping to keep that going.

Bumping both volume and intensity in the run as I'm following the FIRST plan for my HM in May, and that's starting to come together well.  But I'm constantly worried about my IT Band which forced me to run very little last year.  I'm on the foam roller most days even when everything feels fine just a precautionary measure, but I still need to get off my butt and choose some strength exercises for glutes, hip flexors, etc.

As for the swim, I feel more comfortable incorporating a kick now - where before I'd just drag my legs along with me, but I'm not faster.  Went back through my logs and found that I'm swimming the same pace now that I did in August.  And this is after speding 3 months with semi-private lessons, a lot of work on the kick, and a big increase in volume during that time.  So that's a bit frustrating since it seems I've gotten no further ahead after spending time and money on my weakest area.  Ideally I'd like to find a way to shave 2sec/100yd off my 300yd time - and then translate that into the same savings per 1000yd TT.  I was hoping to shave that amount every month, but we'll see what happens.

Thoughts on my training?  I'm pleased with my January.  It has been consistent and that tends to lead to solid volume.  Had planned on swimming only twice a week over the Winter but have been doing 3 workouts a week as I enjoy the workouts in the Finding Freestyle program.  Cycling and running have been good-some intensity but nothing  major.  Most importantly, I feel good. Right hamstring and calf issues that were nagging in late December are much improved.  I credit 5 good ART sessions, consistent stretching/exercises for those areas and doing at least an hour of flexibility focused yoga a week.

Happy to say that the forecast here this weekend calls for upper 60's and relatively clear for the weekend so I'm looking forward to getting a good ride and run in without looking like the Michelin Man.

Enjoying the group and everyone's input.

Fred Doucette - 2011-01-27 10:30 AM I delivered 4 babies in the last 24 hours,

Fred-it would be interesting if you kept up with the number of babies you delivered in your training log.  At the end of the month when everyone is posting their numbers in the main forum you could could list s/b/r/babies............ Enjoy the rest of your day.

Randy

How about frustration with gadgets?

My wko+ won't open. I'm waiting to hear back from Training Peaks how to fix it. After IMFL I didn't download data for my rides on my cross bike. I've been downloading into PowerAgent and uploading into my Training Peaks account for my coach.

My new speed sensor can't be found by my Joule...need to call Saris again. This is a replacement one they sent me. I'm wondering if it is a user issue or Joule issue. Until that works I'm using my Power Tap for my power numbers. I guess I'm lucky I have a spare Power meter

My wheel is slipping on my Computrainer when I change power from zone 2 to 5 doing 30/30s in erg. James and others on tri forum gave me some suggestions. I'll start with cleaning with alcohol (if I can find any) my 3 year old trainer tire.

Glad to hear the progress some of you are making.  I've hit a lull in my training.  I went pretty hard Nov-Dec, and just haven't felt like pushing the volume lately, so I haven't.  Hasn't helped that I've been busy at work and had a sore throat with a sick baby.  Looking forward to some warmer weather like (most of) the rest of us.

Speaking of weather, hope those of you that just got hammered are surviving.

Hey folks,

I've been a bit quiet on here coz of work / life getting in the way. Still training as much as I want at the moment as structured training doesn't start for a few weeks.

I've hit a bit of a funk to be honest and am probably off running for a week due to a sore knee now.

Daft question - can bike fit cause knee issues when running?

Tim, yes it can. Very critical on a good fit. May even take several fits. Although you you may not feel pain or discomfort during a ride or fit it can show up later. Have you recently been fitted or changed?Another thing to look at is how many miles on your running shoes? I have had anywhere from my toes too my hips hurt from shoes. Mainly break down in cushioning, but from the wrong shoe as well.

btw I spoke with my coach 2 nights ago. We are going to do a 20 and an 8 min test next week. We won't use indoor training results for races, but will structure training with them. I am looking forward to (and dreading) the testing as it can be very challenging!

uuggh...8min, that sounds rough.  20min, okay, you suffer but you have to pace yourself accordingly.  3min, balls to the wall, and hang on till the end of it.  But 8min - that sounds challenging cause it sort of puts you in a bit of a non-mans land (in my mind).  I'll be interested to read how you do with it, and how different it is from your 20min test.

As for discussion, I am admittedly fixated on power at the moment.  I'm interested to know if most of you follow a very rigid training plan from a "watts" perspective where you're constantly hitting certain targets (high or low), or if you actually spend a fair amount of time just riding above or below a certain number - nothing really predefined but you decide it in advance of the ride.

Cheers, James.

Only thing I've changed of late is to drop my saddle on the tri bike a bit as it felt too high. I did an hour on it Monday which felt good in the quads but ached funny in the knees so I'm guessing that's the cause. My running shoes are pretty much new with about 50 miles on them and no knee pain until now.

Would it be worth matching my saddle height on the tri bike to my road bike? Or is the position just to different?

I agree with your thoughts with testing.

My coach last winter had me do 5' & 20' test indoors and 3' & 20' outdoors. In talking with him I asked if we could please do 3' indoors.  He thought 5' test was better due to some technical reason but I'll see what he'll have me do in the next week or two.

Right now I'm going by zones but as we zero in where I am fitness wise, I'll get workouts that will be something like 3' at 195 watts very specific. I like more specific the better as it helps me focus and execute. My ride tomorrow has 10' zone three intervals with goal for first two to be low zone 3, next two mid zone 3, and last one high zone 3.

I would guess from Fred's workout he was probably aiming at 70 RPMs for his intervals today.

I to try to hold back a little as early in interval xx watts feel easier than later in the interval. I'd rather build than fade yet until you try to stretch a bit you don't know if you can hold 5-10 watts higher than you have been. I have a pretty good feel for watts, RPE and where I am plus I've been riding with power since 2006.  I can pretty much estimate very close what my FTP is based on my training.

I have done all of my FTP testing pursuant to the Coggan protocol.  Basically several warm up sets then 20 minutes all you have.  All of my testing has been done inside on rollers (e-motion).  I too try to build during the testing.  I find that if I break it up into smaller segments it helps.  I also will shift gears every 2-3 minutes to adjust cadence and keep things interesting.  I hate doing these #$%& tests but it does give a number that I then use to set up my "zones" for training.  The last few minutes are beyond miserable.

Fred - is that cadence typical for you?  Or do you just mix it up a little and ride at a lower cadence inddors compared to outdoors?  If you do mix it up just wondering the reasons behind it.  I remember you'd mentioned riding at a lower cadence to simulate hills a bit, but am just curious if this data matches your normal averages.

How about everyone else?  Do you train with different cadences, mix it up, or stay fairly consistent most of the time.  Me, I tend to be fairly consistent in the mid 80's to low 90's.  If I'm near 80, that's low for me.  Just wondering about experimenting a little with some cadences in the 60's and 70's.

All right, I'll brag a little bit: I delivered 14 babies the first weekend in December!Smile That was some crazy a** endurance event if there ever was one!  The 14th patient took YEARS off my life as she very nearly lost her life but she is absolutely fine now (and so is baby).  Phew!

Happy that all this training helps take my mind away from these things.
