Let's see, I'm doing a 10k tomorrow.  I kept going  back and forth between 5k race and 10k race.  I decided on the 10k race as I am suppose to do an 8 miler anyway.  Sooo, might as well make it a hard 10k and see what I can do pace wise.  It's been a while since I've done a run race and I need to get the motivation going in preparation for my marathon in November.

I want to do another HIM next summer.   Haven't picked the location yet.

Work, taking care of kids, half a$$ attempt at cleaning house making life busy.  Of course I watched an episode of Hoarders the other day and I felt much better about my house, LOL.

Yes, I have heard that watching hoarders and then drinking a redbull is the ultimate house cleaning motivation...Smile

New PR for a 5k over the weekend - 24:21 in the Pueblo Hot to Trot.  Same race I PRd last year at 26:37 (trimmed off over 2 minutes on the same course).  It hurt a lot and I kept thinking how stupid this was and I should just stop and walk home.

38 out of 147 too - not too bad for a slow old guy.  Still only finished 8th out of 19 in my AG (40-49) - top runner in AG pulled in a 16 something.

Time to update and status goals I guess - end of season here.

Nice work! The way you describe your 5K is exactly how I felt. I guess it's just the feeling of pushing for a PR Smile

I'm still trying to kick a sinus infection before my tri on Sunday.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  I'm rolling into week 4 of Masters swimming and am loving it.  I am starting to see some real improvement and I find myself always looking forward to swimming now.  I'm looking forward to starting a half marathon plan next week and getting a chance to focus on just my running for a bit.

Until today at lunch, I had never heard of Rosie Ruiz. I have been on and off laughing about it all day. I want to create and market a Ruiz Marathon training plan. I know I am like 35 years behind the joke but just thought I would share.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Mr Speedy McSpeedy!

Top 1/3 in a single-sport race is AWESOME even if you only did that single sport ...

In *truly* big news ... I am sick and ACTUALLY RESTING and NOT TRAINING.

Now that's just all kinds of crazy and totally unprecedented for me. Only took 35 years to figure this out.

SNERK Wouldn't that be just what's usually a half-marathon training plan?

Too bad, because she was actually a really great runner.

Yanti - I don't know much about her beyond what can be found on the internet about the NY, Boston marathons.  Did she continue running?  Most of what I've found is all bad:  lucked into a finisher cert on NY, took the train on Boston (some sites indicate she still says she ran it while others indicate she confessed and only did it to impress her boss at work), got caught with her hand in work cookie jar, and then busted for cocane sales in Miami.

Maybe more like half marathon training plan and a couple of bus/subway passes...but that is just my spin on the plan Smile

Congrats on taking a bit of a break. I think THAT is one of the hardest parts about our sport!

You're so awesome, thanks for remembering.  It went really well (for me!).  Most importantly, I didn't freak out at all on the swim and actually had fun swimming!  Such a big difference from the first attempt in June.  I had a lot of fun on the bike, and survived the run.  So all in all, I'm happy!

Hey all - I was reminded this weekend why you should never target position / placement as a race objective.  I ran a 2nd annual fundraiser 5k for a local schooland last year I placed 18th overall out of ~150, 1st in AG, and ran it in ~26:30.  I was looking to win my AG again and perhaps finish better than last year.

I improved my time to 25:20 and improved from 18th to 12th overall (out of ~300).  HOWEVER, I walked away empty handed after finishing 4th in AG.  Grrrr.  I would have medaled in any other AG, just not the male 40-49.

Still happy, but wish it was better.

Oh man, you should just simply be proud of that PR!! That is almost a full minute faster! Obviously you already know this but you can't control who shows up to race. You more than controlled the part you could (your PR)!

OK Mentors and experts - question on Ironman and recovery.  I'm about 70% convinced I will do Ironman St. George in May 2012 (May 5, 2012).  I was just selected in the Escape from Alcatraz tri last night and this race is June 10, 2012.

Would the 5 or so weeks between events be enough to recover from a full iron race and then compete again?

Goal for the Ironman is to finish (would like to be around 13-15 hours).  Goal for Alcatraz is sub-3 hours (did it this summer in 3:22).

Thoughts???

First off, congrats on getting selected for Alcatraz. And, belated congrats on your 5K. You can't judge your performance by who else shows up at a race and places...you can only judge your own performance by how you felt, how much you had to give and did you give it and if you want, to compare it to last year or a previous go 'round at the same race in the same venue. I'd go with you improved your time.

As far as IM. You won't know how you feel post IM until you're in the throes of it. Sure, its very possible to do the Alcatraz 5 weeks after an IM, but you won't be training for it per se. YOu'll probably be going on residual fitness. You'll likely need to take some serious recovery time...and by serious, I mean no real training, just recovery rides, swims and easier runs. You'll want to stay active, but the intensity will be dialed down significantly from how you were training pre-IM. From my experience, I think I probably ran a bit too soon following  my IM this year but was fortunate and did not get injured. Getting injured is the concern about coming back to quickly or intensely. There are several articles and "expert" opinions out there on what to do after an IM (for us amateurs) so you can find all kinds of opinions. Pros live in a whole other universe and can do an IM and then a month or two later do another. My 2-cents.
