I changed out my hybrid wheels for Shimano R20 road wheels.  My bike is a hybrid so it's heavier but I am familiar with it and it has the granny wheel that yes, I use once or twice a month.  Anyway, I went for an easy ride today with the new wheels to practice turns, one gradual hill, rough terain with a little detour into the grass due to a downed fence.  Love the wheels....wow it really seems to make a difference.

Enjoying the taper.  Think I was pretty sleep deprived from my nursing duty for my mom so I've been sleeping alot....even taking naps.

Gear is ready, transition area planned.  I'm ready Jen.  And suprisingly I'm not nervous like I was earlier.  I am just so ready to go.

I can hardly wait to see all the race reports from the weekend.  Jen - let's try to meet up after the race.  I will be cooling off by the pond and will have my bright yellow jacket....may not be wearing it but will be displaying it so you can see me.  I'm the 52 year old lady with my 19 year old son (he's Korean) with a huge smile on my face because I finished.  Will look for you, but have no idea how crowded it will be.  Oh, I'm adding camera to my race day list because we are going to get our pics taken together!!!

I've never done a tri with an ocean swim, so I'm anxious to hear your report.  Good luck to ya!

I've got a race this weekend as well, my first of the year.  Although I'm pumped to finally race, the director made a substantial change to the bike course due a landslide a few weeks ago.  I'm not terribly familiar with the area, but it sounds like the bike course went from hard to really, really hard with the new changes.

We'll see how it goes!

Good luck I'm sure you'll kick it.

I've done one ocean swim but it was a harbor and a straight shot from one pier to another. This is off the beach in a triangle and open water. It is Long Island Sound so I don't think it'll be too rough but you never know. Salt water regardless leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Are you ready? It's race weekend for you as well!

I think so.  I'm trying to go with the flow and not worry about the course changes, but I know I'm weak on the bike, especially with hills.  The run's flat and shaded, though, so I hope to make up any time lost on the bike with a solid run.  Either way, this race will be good prep for my HIM, which is the one I really care about.

Who else is racing this weekend?

Hi everyone, if you are racing this weekend – have a great race! I look forward to reading about your experiences.

I started my recovery doing weight training and core this week. I also started jogging on a small trampoline, which to my surprise raised my heart rate pretty good and there was very little stress on the lower joints. Next week I will add some jogging.

Definitely Linda!  I am excited for Sunday to come.  If you want, e-mail me your phone number, then I can also call you afterwards so we can meet up.  I don't think we're going to stay there much after the race (since we'll have my boyfriend's daughter with us and have some things we need to get done) - [email protected].

Anyone here have any good recommendations for a good multi-tool for bike for like, on the road bike repairs/tweaks?

I've been looking at Blackburn Toolmanator

http://www.amazon.com/Blackburn-Toolmanator-Multi-Function-Bike-Tool/dp/B000BNTY5I/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1308873062&sr=8-20

and the Topeak Hexus II:

http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-60102538-Hexus-II-Multi-tool/dp/B0037N32VG/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1308873098&sr=8-8

Please let me know of any other highly recommended ones.  I'd say my budget is around $20 but I'm still open to what may be a better choice if it costs a little more than that. =)

Thanks,

Roland

Okay thinking of doing a super sprint(1/3 mile swim, 9.3mile bike, 2.5mile run) tri July 1...2 weeks before my Oly...too much, too soon?

Also curious what constitutes a sprint...Around here it seems like it is 1/2 mile swim, 13mile bike and 6.3 mile run...

I have been in 3 sprints and getting ready to do my 4th. They have been anywhere from a 250-1000 meter swim. (Usually 750m if open water). 20K (or 12 mile bike), but one was 10.5 and another was 17 for me. And a 5k at the finish. I think it means it shorter than an Olympic distance. They are fun races and I have enjoyed them! I'm working my way to Olympic distance. Will do it next year!

3!! man you are a wiley veteran... Smile

Will that be 4 in 1 year? or do you have more planned?

I'm doing my 4th Sunday and will do two more, one in August and one in October. It helps me keep my weight down! And it's fun! Next year, I will do an Olympic in June and some more sprints. My friends think I've lost my mind!

Did my first 1500 swim during lunch break day.  Felt pretty good!  Lap times were improved from last 1500, probably because I was trying to get back to work on time hehehe.  Now I feel mellowed out and sleepy.  ^_^

~Roland

Just crawl behind your desk and have little nap, no one will notice... :-)

So, you do that too eh? The swims do make me a bit groggy too ...or maybe because I do them at 0500. Nice job on the swim Roland -Glad to hear your times are improving!

Eh, it's not that bad... I know it's swimming but are you fueling before you start the swim? i.e. did you take a gel?

I felt like napping alright hehe!  Workouts at 0500 David???  All you early morning people!  Grrrr,  I better get my butt to sleep earlier so I can wake up early like you guys.  Tongue out  I'm gonna try getting some morning workouts on weekends.

@Scott, I ate half a Clif bar an hour before the swim and I was hydrating all morning.  Should I have eaten the whole thing?  If I had an after work long run, will getting a swim/bike workout the following morning do any harm?

~Roland

0500 would be sleeping in for me. When I bike, I wake up at 4, and get a good 3 hour ride before work even starts

It's a 210X, but gives me everything I need. I have a question about the HR strap. Do you put it on in a race when you transition out of the water? Or can you wear it in the water? I am racing Sunday and that will really be my first chance to use it.

I roll out of bed at 4 for week day biking, 4:20 for swimming and long runs. Shorter runs and weekend workouts I get out of bed at a late time of 5AM. I think we're all in that same boat of being like that old Marine's commercial where we do more before 7AM than most people do their entire day.

My workout partner and I have been working out together for the most part since we were 20 years old and we are both 43 now. We started the joke way back then that we were in the top 1% of the general population but judged ourselves against the people who were working as hard as we were. Now at 43 that's applies exponentially more. Really we are probably in the top .01% of the general population but were average at best vs the rest of the triathlon community.

I think it's important to pat yourself on the back and take pride in what you're doing. You're all in that top percentage vs your age group because most people get lazy as they get older. Getting up at 4AM isn't easy and some mornings it flat out sucks.

Major applause to all of you. Cool

Well the bad news...no race for me July 1, apparently Canada Day(=July 4) is necessary to go to parade with family... Good news still in the race for July 17, another Sept.5. Might try squeeze one in August and another Sept. 11. Time, family and holidays will guide me in this regard!

Such a great point!  My instructor for my brick classes talk about this and it is so true - how many people do you know that do even 1/4 of what we do on a daily basis.  Of my group of friends, I only know one other person who even works out on a regular basis and can put forward the effort we do.

Jen - I am in the same boat as you, very few of my friends even workout and they think I am crazy.  I get up at the early hour of 10:30 am Laughing to do my run or bike before work.  Then shower, pack my lunch and it's off to work I go (1-11pm).  4 days a week I do a swim. I hit the pool around midnight.  It's so peaceful, but you'd think I could swim better with doing this consistently.  A new goal I have is to get myself in good enough swimming shape that I can take a masters class this winter.  So, it sounds like I am going to bed a few hours before you guys head out for your morning workout.
