She loves it and it does wonders for her. --- I myself have not yet been able to develop any love for the trainer, but I have also had several crashes from knuckleheads that don't know what a stop sign is. My head votes for the trainer, even if my heart does not I mix it up. I find a trainer ride to be a better workout than going outside for a ride because you're never coasting and you can dial in your watts, RPE, HR, cadence (whatever metrics you use) much easier. It's also a mental jiu-jitsu challenge to ride 5 hours on a trainer. If you can do that, an IM ride will be easy as pie. Plus you can watch TV. Obviously, the trainer hurts more. My "under carriage" isn't too pleased with me after a long trainer ride. Because of the family schedule this weekend I did 5 hours on the trainer this morning, I started at 12:30am Looking at my HR I'm not sure I did the best job but I was very happy to be done Little sleepy now.... |

Save your knees and just bikeRan a hilly 18 in 2:36 today in the cold and rain. Good confidence builder. However now I'm not sure how much farther I want to go on the run. I'd love to hit 20 miles (~3 hours) but I'm worried about injuries. My knees were a bit stiff by the end of today's run and I've been dealing with this since I signed up for Arizona. Not sure if it's worth the risk. Is 18 and 2:36 enough? |

I was planning on running 15-16 next weekend as well, then the weekend after that I'm doing a fun half marathon. However we're taking the kids away for the weekend coming up, and as it turns out there's a half marathon in town there that I might do. It's a Honky Tonk Marathon/Half Marathon and my medal would be a belt buckle, how can I pass that up? So, like alot of others have asked, should today's 18 be enough, and I'll 13 the next two weekends then taper? |

You'd have to be disciplined to not race the HM so that you could keep running, but I think you should be doing that anyway. |

Nothing real long for me but I did have some mental toughness workouts. Cool weather here so I decided to stay inside to get used to warm conditions. 4 hours on the bike trainer and 12 miles on the treadmill actually went pretty well. 4 day weekend coming up next week and coach has me prepared to go long and hard. |

People put way too much emphasis on their long run into ironman. Go back the last 8 weeks and tell us your weekly run volume each week. Much better picture if you are ready. Running 3 plus hours in training is crazy. Edited by rcntly4298 2012-10-14 8:20 PM |

Member 19 | Subject: Half IM on 11/4?? I am considering a "fun" Half IM distance race on 11/4. This would be my last long effort. Is this insane or would it be ok? I am feeling strong but want to mix it up in a good open water swim and could use another strong 56 on the bike. I have thought about bailing after the bike but just can't seem to bring myself to plan on that. I have been injured with broken foot and hand this season. Kept training as best I could through it all. Feel strong now but have not had much race practice. I would appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks! |

I had a pretty good weekend...Saturday I rode 95 miles and followed it up with a quick 4 mile run and today I did a 4k OWS race and finished in 1:15:50. Considering I would have loved to just break 1:20:00 I was really happy. My long run was not so great. It was hot and I didn't plan my nutrition very well...set out to do 18 miles in 2:40, ended up doing 17 miles in 2:45. I have a HIM next week (which means rest week this week!!) and I'm going to follow it with another long week before I start tapering. Probably won't run much longer than 18, but I'd like to be a little more comfortable... |

Monica is going to do her ride tomorrow or Tuesday afternoon as it's supposed to be warmer. I dont' know WHEN I'm going to get mine in. There is a HIM in AZ (SOMA) next weekend (4wks before IM AZ) that is always the talk of debate for IM AZers. Do I or do I not race a month prior? I did not last year, and was fine in IM AZ. I know people of similar fitness who did race SOMA, and they were fine in IM AZ. Again, if your fitness level is up to it, there is nothing to say it will kill you. My only advice would be to make sure you play it safe - injury from pushing at race speed would be damaging to IM AZ potential. |

The Scottsdale Rd bridge uses both sides for the IM race. That being said, I do not recall them "closing" it down to other pedestrian traffic. I could be wrong, though. As long as your family is careful and stays out of the way of the athletes, they likely would be ignored going over the bridge. The lakeside paths have plenty of room for spectators and athletes alike. |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Good weekend here, too- 4.5k OWS yesterday was boring and slow but otherwise successful. Today I did my first ever 100 mile ride - 70 of it with Tour de Scottsdale, the rest on my own. Followed it up with a 2-mile transition run which was ok; getting pretty warm by then. It was a picture-perfect day for riding, though- low 60s at the start, upper 80s at the finish. Looking ahead to taper; are you guys planning a 2- or 3- week taper? I was thinking 3, but there are two events the first weekend of Nov. that I'd REALLY like to do- a century on Saturday, and a half marathon on Sunday. I'm thinking as long as I keep the pace easy I should be ok. What do you think? |

To answer your other question, for me, the taper starts earlier for the run, last long run will be last weekend in Oct., then moving down from there. Last long ride will be first weekend in November, and I'll keep swimming long until the week before. |

If your schedule allows it, we've got a couple real nice days heading your way, maybe later this week you could get your long ride in. Last I checked it's going to be great here tomorrow for a long ride, maybe you'll get that weather by Thursday or Friday?
And thanks everyone for the long run analysis, I think I'll probably try and figure out a way to turn this coming weekend's half marathon into 16-17 miles plus some good mileage during the midweek runs. Maybe I can try and squeeze in a long run about 2.5 weeks out as well, a 14 or 15 miler. |

This is the best news I've heard as well. My 100 miler this weekend (an organized century ride) was on horrible chip seal roads and about 1 mile of gravel road. Not fun at all. Hearing "smooth roads" is like music to my ears. |

Veteran 784 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I had a descent weekend considering I was really unmotived earlier in the week in which I took some days off. Friday I got in a 17.55 mile run in 2.5 hours with a hour bike on the trainer later in the night, than yesterday I had an epic battle with the wind on my 5.5 hour ride (89.1miles) followed with a 1 hour run (7.17miles). Man but on the bike I decided to do loops again and on the way out I was going 10 -13 mph (due to the strongest head wind I have faced to date) and than on the way back I was doing 19-21mph.....the final loop going out was super tough, I was getting mentally tired and seeing 10 mph an hour in Aero, was def not helping the cause, but I just kept thinking that this is what Arizona is going to feel like so lets get through it.....but the run felt solid, i was averaging about 8:11/mile. I think with two more long bricks and runs scheduled, I think I may be ready for this thing...but watching Kona on Saturday all day was a great motivator....exactly what I needed to recharge the batteries. |

I did this before my last marathon; did a couple miles warmup before the start to make it a 15-mile training run. I loved it- the time just flew by compared with a solo training run, and there were donuts at the finish! (Most of my long runs and rides involve donuts at some point.) |

Except, I was doing one giant loop and as I got to the top of it the winds switched directions on me, so it was in my face almost the entire day! It was horrible. One particularly awful 10 mile stretch took me almost 50 minutes! I do want to ask the group this question - just how bad are the winds (typically) for this race? Are they in our face or at our sides? Gusty? And about how strong? |

Didn't start to hurt until 16, then it wasn't so bad. Last night it started hurting at 14, and when I hit 18 and stopped running, it actually hurt way worse to walk. Not real sure of the difference, other than less sleep 2 nights before. First attempt, I rode 70 miles saturday and swam 2.4 Sunday morning before my afternoon run. This attempt, I rode 100 saturday and swam only 2 miles in the morning. Run was very late as I waited out predicted storms. |

A lot of times it seems to blow across the road, but a headwind is not unheard of. |
