Too cold for a race? Is there such a thing?

Actually, this is something I was just looking up. My running partner is telling me I shouldn't gun for a PR on my upcoming HM on Jan 28 because it will be way too cold for that (even if its 30F).

In me, I see a huge deterioration of performance as I get hot, but being cold doesn't seem to hurt that much.

I have faster times in cooler air. 60 F seems to be my magic number. Any lower than that has no effect. I did skip a race last year because it was 2 F with a -15 wind chill, so I do have standards.

Gabriel, like I told you yesterday on the phone, congratulations buddy on the new addition! I have the feeling that we're still talking about another "chancleta" but we'll know better in a few months. About allocating time for training and working and most important family time, this is a few tips (and this is not for Gabriel only, but for everybody) that I learned to make things smoother at home.

- Triathlons are a family achievement, don't be selfish to think that they didn't put anything into it when you cross the finish line. Celebrate with them and include them in your plans, make them help you choose the races, so when the time for hard training comes, your spouses are your partners and not your detractors.

- Do your own workout laundry. Trust me on this one, keep it separate from the regular laundry and do it by yourself. Your husband/wife will eventually hate taking care of this chore, and if you train pretty frequently the amount of dirty clothes in a week will be about two full loads.

- Make plans and time for the family that involve no training/racing, triathlons are only part of your life, maybe an addicting one but still just a part. Vacations are vacations and races are races. No such thing as a "racecation"

- Work is what allows for triathlons, I know a few teammates that have literally lost their jobs because of putting their big blocks of training (fifteen hours a week or more) as a number one priority and then showed up late to work/left early or fell asleep on the desks because of exhaustion. Take care of work and don't let this get into it. Also, your co-workers probably admire what you do and think that you're great but after a while, they'll grow tired of Ironman stories and epic rides and long runs (my own experience).

I wanted to share the news that my wife Estefania and I recently learned that we are blessed to be expecting our third child for July!  We have two lovely daughters, so it will be great to see if we finally get a boy, or if the girl domination will continue at home!

Congratulations! You can't beat girl domination when you are the Dad. I have three girls and our youngest is the boy. All of them are great kids, but you will always be the standard for your girls, and those boys will have a lot to live up. Besides statistics are against you, if the father is in good physical condition you are 65% more likely to have a girl. Guatemala was very good to me because that is where my son was born.

I will have to disagree with your friend Chris, my best races have been in (Texas) cold weather. Dallas White Rock Half Marathon 2010 (my PR) was brutally cold (25) and I did great. The Turkey Trot this year was the same thing... According to the experts, the ideal temperature for a marathon is 48, clear and not windy. However you can make up the difference with one more layer, a beanie that covers the ears, and gloves.

It just becomes an issue of what you wear as the temp drops. I wear shorts until  the temp drops below 50 F. Then I wear tights, socks and 1/4 zip fleece. Once the temp drops under 40 F I wear a knit cap and gloves. Under 20 F I put a hoodie on top and switch to fall soccer socks. Under 10 F I put on a sports jackets (I hate running when it is that cold). Following this template, you are going to be warm within the first mile. Also make sure you use some type of lip balm, and if you are like my son, you will need lotion on your cheeks and nose. It also helps if you buy running gloves which have a snot catcher on the finger and thumb.

When you are breathing in cold weather by time the air reaches your lungs, it is body temp. If you get a mucus build up and start coughing, you are running too hard, you need to slow down.

I had to laugh at this section!!!!  With both of us training, I am constantly doing laundry.....  But for us it's an even exchange.  When we married I left the work force and my job of over 15years.  I was putting in over 60 hours a week of work away from home not to mention the work I did at home.  Now that I'm home I still struggle with the balance of training, kids, maintaining the home, and having time with Scott that doesn't revolve around training.  It's tough.  This year we are (as best we can) trying to do our workouts at different times so the kids have one of us around.  As well as trying to make sure we have time for them, game nights, movie nights....  It's work!  For us, I think the kids have a good understanding of what we are doing.   They both have even started doing push-ups at night with us.

Gabe, Congratulations!  2012 is a big year for you and your family.  I'm already thinking what kind of challenge we should have for Feb.  And it won't be frequency.  Anyone have any ideas?

Joyce, What part of PA?  I'll be near Pittsburgh this weekend.  Figuring out how to get my 30 min workout in on Sat.

Charlotte and Samy, Do not despair.  It's a long month and we will all have the opportunity to miss a workout.  Besides, we all win because of the consistency of the workouts.  You'll see.

Jim, Thanks for the rundown on what to wear.  I knew the part about shorts at 50.  The rest is really helpful.  Hopefully it won't be too much below that.  Perfect for me is about 40 and sunny.

I have noticed a difference in my workouts, just like in November.  I ran my practice half this weekend a minute per mile faster than when I practiced a month ago.

To those of you on the carb test.  Be careful.  It wiped some of us out.  I was exhausted after the first 4 or 5 days.  Don't push on your workouts too much until you see what it does to you.

I did one hour on the trainer following a Sufferfest video (The Hunted).  It was just friggin nasty - you can check out the link on my log to see the damage.  I think the format to be much more interesting than watching Coach Troy - but then again I can watch all day coverage of the Giro d'Italia and be happySmile

I do the Sufferfest fight club today, I'm sure if you made me excited, full of dread, or just plain scared. It really adds to the workout doesn't it.

I also use trainerroad.com which has corresponding workouts to all of the SF titles.  I ran my iMac into the 56" in front of the trainer and it is just plain awesome to watch the videos and see your data at the bottom of the big screen.

Congratulations Gabe.  I am loving the motivation our challenge provides.

Thanks to someone's recommendation I bought the Maffetone book on the weekend it is excellent. I am on my 3rd day of 2 week carbohydrate intolerance test.

We have three teenagers.  Last night my husband and twins were watching LSU and Alabama in the Nationals while twins were also doing homework and I was in same TV room on the trainer for 45 minutes. Family life is so great!!

So glad that you bought the book.  Ernesto recommended it to all of us last year and it was a great investment.  I always find myself looking something up in there, or just looking for a meal suggestion.  You have tons of support in this group!

Justin (our son) asked that I do my trainer workout as soon as I get home today.  He said that way I'll be done by the time Scott gets home.

My engineering mind just developed a plan to win the challenge...I am 1 day behind everyone, but WAY behind on time. Since, according to the rules, any race 5K or longer gives you 1 point for that day, the day before and the day after, I need to:

a) Not miss any more days

b) run a 10 K on Jan 31, which will give me 1 point for Feb 1...total 31 points

c) run it REALLY slow (like 2 hr/mile), to make up for lost time (I will just say I was following Maffetone's method)

d) Sneak in to Guatemala and puncture Gabe's bike tires so he cannot do any more 4 hr rides

Like Kramer would say: GOLD, JERRY, GOLD!

Have a somewhat unconventional training question.

Up to now, I have been walking a set time period after every mile. Started with 1:30 secs, and now down to 30 secs between miles. During this challenge, I tried (and succeded) running the whole 3 miles straight.

However, when I push myself, I can run at a faster pace when resting between miles, even taking into account the walking time. For example, compare my runs from Dec 29 vs Jan 7 (both runs where I decided to push myself). On Dec 29 (garmin data in the logs), 1 mile run, 30 sec walk - repeat 3 times: 3.09 miles at a pace of 9:23/mile. This pace includes three 30 sec. walks. On Jan 7, 3 miles straight at a pace of 9:31/mile. Also, on the run/walk, I finished "fresher".

So the way I see it, I can do 3 things:

1) Keep resting 30 secs between miles.

2) Eliminate the resting and just run straight.

3) Eliminate the resting on my short runs (3 miles for now), and keep them for the long runs (4 miles planning to go to 5 in the next couple of weeks)

I am planning ti do sprint distances for my first 2-3 races, with my first race Feb 26, and I guess my idea is to do whatever will lead me to have the faster time at the race.

PS: I am planning to buy the Maffetone book, but first wanted to make sure I had a decent base for training

Samy - You'll see it on here a lot. Run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard. If your heartrate is high then you should just slow down, even if it feels too easy. Its not. That being said, I know lots of people who train for marathons using a run/walk method, so if it works for you then you should keep doing it. They find (like you) that they can go faster with a short walk break every mile or 15 minutes or whatever works. Last year I ran a HM and the woman next to me did a run/walk and I ran the whole thing - I'd get ahead of her when she walked and then she'd pass me on the run. We ended up finishing in about the same time. I have mixed feelings about the maffetone book (I'm a heretic admitting it in this group) but agree that running mostly easy as he recommends is a good start. Are you following a training plan for your tri?

I did one hour on the trainer following a Sufferfest video (The Hunted).  It was just friggin nasty - you can check out the link on my log to see the damage.  I think the format to be much more interesting than watching Coach Troy - but then again I can watch all day coverage of the Giro d'Italia and be happySmile

I do the Sufferfest fight club today, I'm sure if you made me excited, full of dread, or just plain scared. It really adds to the workout doesn't it.

I have three and Fight Club is my favorite - in a sick twisted sort of way.

Joyce, What part of PA?  I'll be near Pittsburgh this weekend.  Figuring out how to get my 30 min workout in on Sat.

Jackie ~ I was in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Area, it's 4-5 hours east of Pittsburgh.  Where my parents live is very urban, much like Philly.  I did a google search for running trials in the area and came up with a load of hiking trails, parks, recreation fields etc.  I got lucky with the first on my list being only 5 minutes away AND beautiful.  My husband and I like to visit local outdoor parks when we take the kids on vacation.  We do the same thing, make a list of the 5 closest.  Sometimes it takes a couple stops before we find what we are looking for, but there is always find one with beauty and space to run.  My run's go so fast when I'm somewhere different, looking at the new sights .... Good luck and Enjoy!!!

Congrats, Gabe!! I'm very biased towards boys (two of 'em) but you can save a ton of money in hand-me-downs with another girl. I'm excited for you and your family.
