Master 1332 Vista, CA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Tripopo - 2012-01-21 8:07 AM Been Procrastinating (yes it needs to be capitalized it has been pretty bad this week on my part) the start of my HIM training, it will be tuesday I swear, but I was trying to figure out a good goal time for it, I need a goal time to at least shoot for while training more so than just to finish otherwise I tend to slack off a bit.
Would sub 5:45 be unreasonable? 45 on swim, my Oly was just over 30 in september a little under 3 on the bike a little over 2 on the HM, I realize I did 2:12 on the half but with 3 more months of training I think I can at least repeat it at the end of S/B
According to last years times this would put me fairly solidly at MOP, thoughts of the wise Manatees?
Kirk, a couple of things come to mind -- first, I'd have 3 goals, the first one being your ideal goal time, the second one, a reasonable one and the third one you can live with. For example, on my first marathon my 3rd goal was just to finish, but I could live with under 5. At that first one, and the first time you do any distance, you simply don't know for sure what you can and cannot do (or what your body can and cannot do). So I hate to see you lock yourself into a goal time and not meet it and be disappointed, but you still performed to the best of your ability on that given day. My goals are some what more esoteric lik that now but I haven't given up on a clock quite yet, either. Also, on the longer distance triathlons, and I guess I mean HIM and longer, nutrition kind of becomes the 4th leg of the event. Knowing how to pace and fuel and not bonk, yet not over eat or drink becomes really important and those are things you'll practice in your training. So, no I think your 5:45 goal is doable, especially with the flatter route your tri will be on. I looked and it seems nice and flat, and your times are strong on the bike. Do you have a training plan you're following? I think you'll eventually want to include lots of runs of the bike (bricks, T-runs) whatever you want to call them so your legs will get that feeling of running tired and know how to respond. How exciting to be doing your first HIM. We're with you all the way!! Now get out there and train... THWACK!!! manatee flipper firmly planted! |

I played on a coed team for 3 years and dear lord some of those smells. Some guys just left their gear in the car to dry out.....Oh the memories.Asalzwed - 2012-01-20 3:42 AM TriAya - 2012-01-19 1:35 PM Asalzwed - 2012-01-20 3:29 AM Yeah, you think those Alien zombie eyes are creepy...the driver popped his head in and said, "The dog and I are a two for one deal. That's how I get my creepy old man status." this was followed by nervous laughter on my end. I kid you not. cantstopraffing Even before you wrote that, I was actually imagining someone like the tow truck driver in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle Uhhh yeah, actually that visual is pretty spot on. By the way, I am always impressed by your extensive pop culture references you are able to make. ALSO "I was in fact thinking of you when I wrote "crazee smellee Manatee partee ... " Don't get me wrong. I like smelly." Exxxxcuuuuuse me? Are you calling me smelly? I mean, you are right, but...still... Hot hockey chicks, soccer chicks, rock climbing/camping chicks, long-course tri chicks, etc. that's actually a very cool kind of smelly. I will confess, I like smelly guys, too. Stinky people usually have been active, and that means they're all glowy and vibrant with lots of blood rushing around. |

Off tri talk for a moment I am on day 3 of "staycation" we have been without power since Thursday 7am. Snow and ice. I live about 30 miles east of Seattle. AT&T lost their cell tower too. Our Internet/cable wire fell in the street and since it wasn't long enough to lay down on the gound the power crews cut it. I still have my cold so no workouts since my marathon. We have seen two movies and lots of together time! But we are safe and warm and thankful that we can afford to stay in a hotel. Friends have offered homes but sometimes just easier to hang in a hotel.Ok..... Thanks for reading! Tomorrow is a new day hopefully with power!Ann |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Kate--hope you had a blast at your du! I have yet to do the du--how cool! GO LYNN!!! Allen--as Lynn said, just feel about your T.I.T.S. to see what kind of cadences work for you. Ann--hope things are sparking again soon so you can go home! Love your good attitude. Kirk--as usual, great advice from Lynn. P.S. Don't forget transitions, and remember that the conditions of any one day may require significantly more or less work. P.P.S. Use times to (as you said) guide and motivate your training, but be ready for a flexible goal on race day, especially on a first distance. There are probably other important things I should say, but all of you have already pitched in to say them I'm not exactly in my right mind, but I suppose that's not news to anyone. Trying very hard to get my parents and their Crazy Castle set in order so I can bust outta here and go home to Bali and my own Funny Farm on Tuesday. |

Just get to your workouts when you have time for rest--working a long shift and then doing a long workout just seems to me like an invitation for sickness to creep in. I completed the duathlon this morning--my blog has the basic details, but I will write up the race report once results are posted. Needless to say I am not happy with my performance this morning, but I am looking at it as a means to motivate me to train harder/better for my upcoming races. ---At least it was not raining! |

Master 1332 Vista, CA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Thanks for the well wishes Manatees. Finished my run this morning. From my blog: Missed a PR by 40 some seconds. I would have liked to see a 1 before my minutes time, but 9 seconds and I would have been there. I felt like I was going to toss 'em the last couple of miles, so I know my effort was there. Glad about the negative split. 8:43 for the last 6.6. While this is a fairly flat and rolling course, most of the hills are in the first half. Not a bad run considering everything. DH came out to see my finish. Nice. Waited for over 30 minutes in the gear bag line. Poorly organized and I felt like I should go help them! (Didn't) Selfish, selfish, I know. RR to come.

Extreme Veteran 525 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Go grab a nice plate of cheese because I'm about to pour out some whine.
Sooo...I'm still here. Sorry been MIA these past couple of weeks. I made the mistake of pushing myself more than I should have a couple of weeks ago. I ended up hurting my ITB on a run. Talked to my PT brother and he confirmed that I had probably strained it a little. Basically went on a longer run (for me) and a faster pace than I should have. Got tired, hip flexors got fatigued, and my form went all the heck. Boom! ITB strain. Of course that didn't stop me from doing other exercises that same day. After the run I decided to do the Ab Ripper X work-out from my P90X set (about 340 reps total) and ended up with abs so sore I couldn't laugh or cry and further straining my hip-flexors. Smart right? Basically ended up hunched over like an old man all week because I couldn't straighten up due to my hip flexors. My wife felt bad for me but couldn't stop laughing. :-| Last weekend I tried to go for a run and made it to the end of my street before turning around. Nope, knee wasn't done with me yet. That kind of demoralized me a bit. On the plus side, I've still been able to get my swims and a few good bikes in. I was finally able to get in a short run last week but pretty discouraged to see how quickly my run fitness had regressed. These setbacks really stink. Edited by wushunut 2012-01-23 1:06 PM |
