Going to stick with around 100k running. Ego wants to move up but I got 5 more months of this so just keeping it easy and healthy. Way to lead by example Darren! 60 miles is a pretty good effort and I'm glad to see that you are getting going on the bike. The weather this spring has been CRAZY nice and I'm glad that you have taken advantage of it! Question - I want to start doing some yoga at home. Are there any programs you like? I have developed my yoga practice as a way of keeping loose and get my blood flowing before I go to bed, which I feel helps move some of the crap that accumulates around the muscles from running and to some extent biking. If I did swimming I wouldn't feel a need to do it as much as I feel swimming really is great at removing residual soreness. It also keeps me from sitting in front of the tv drinking beer and scotch. Anyways. Start with sun salutations. They can be done quickly for a fairly good cardio workout or slowly. Start with 10 minutes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surya_Namaskara Throw in some twists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ardha_matsyendrasana.jpg I love this one for the quads and hips http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kapot%C4%81sana-pigeon.jpg Also the triangle pose, although can be hard on tired legs http://beginneryogaposes.com/triangle_pose.htm I like doing some pushups, some sit ups or leg raises. Some other random groin stretches. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() speaking of beer and scotch. I went to the doctor today, he says I can go off my blood thinners, which is good. But he also said, like completely unrequested, that I should lose weight and stop drinking. I said I drank 2 a day, rarely more. He said, "alcohol is a toxin, even small amounts add up". And he is like lose 20 lbs. I mean, I know I am not skinny, sitting at 6 feet and 194 lbs today. But until this guy, I have been the only person who thought that. Everyone I know is fatter. I have had other doctors tell me I am in great shape (I always rolled my eyes a bit on that). He says, you should always be a little hungry even after you finish eating. AHHHHHHHHHHHH. I mean I know this is true. And I love to eat. He said you should weigh LESS than your ideal weight, not drink, and then you will never get sick. I admit to believing what he says. I don't generally approve of my drinking and eating I mean I have run.....about 95km a week for the December, January and February and I haven't lost a pound. That takes some significant intake. |

Didn't feel great, but ran the last 4 at 8:00/mi race pace. wondering how I'm going to squeeze another 8 miles in there come marathon time. 2 more months to figure it out. Kevin - I just want to say that I think your progress is going along at a pretty good clip. You've gotten lighter and faster. There is no quit in you! You've decided to slim down a little more and carrying around less weigh will help to get you closer to that start/finish line. So too will the nice weather. It will be much easier to get outside and these nice spring days should make those runs a little more more enjoyable... A piece of advice from a former hs cc coach - you should not be gauging your progress on the speed of your weekly long runs. Those pre-race long runs should be used for LSD - long SLOW distance. Going slow will help teach your body to use energy better and more efficiently. Your speed should come from hills and speed workouts. Remember - not to go too hard on your tough days - but shoot for 75% percent of your max... You'll get there. Good advice. I have trained and ran 4. Each training plan had more elements of sprinting, and taking it easy on the long run. This time around, with training for a HIM also, I have way less time to incorporate. I am making my intermediate run my speed day, my long run my maintanence day, and my short run is my recovery run. I simply do not feel I have enough other workouts to increase pace, so I do a lot of that on my long run. I know it sounds backwards, but I am faster on all my runs than in the 2 years prior for this time of year. Kevin - I hear you and I totally understand. Two quick thoughts - make sure that you are making the most of your rest days. Fast long runs can and will eventually lead to injury, so make sure to honor your off days and be sure to stretch, ice and take some advil to keep your body from breaking down. One other thought - break your long run into three parts: a quick first third will intervals, a long second third where you take it slow, and the final third where you mimic a strong finish...You'll get the speed you are looking for, train your body for a fast finish, and avoid injury. That's a good word right there! I think I'll shoot for this on my next run of 18+. This week, I'm backing off on the volume and strictly focussed on speed. 8:00/mi or bust! |

Great news about the blood thinners. While I am not a doctor - nor do I play one on tv - I think your doc is full of crap. I didn't go to medical school but here is what I would have told you. 1) Great job on the exercise - you get to come off blood thinners. To tell you to abstain is asinine! Cut back in a way you can live with so you can make it sustainable. Just my two cents. PS - if I ran as much as you - my doctor might just faint... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I raced home from work with the goal of getting out for a ride. I'd been thinking about it all day long. When I got home, I quickly changed only to discover that I had a flat rear tire. I took the bike to the repair shop because it needed a tune up only to discover that the bike I bought used three years ago is now a piece of crap. I need: 1) A new rear wheel, 2) new tires and tubes for both wheels, 3) a new rear cassette and chain, 4) a tune up = $400... Not good. No now it's time to buy a bike. I think I'm leaning towards a new bike. The last one was used and the problems that it caused only pissed me off. So, how should I approach this? I love to ride these days more than I loved to run in high school and that's a lot. I intend on putting in some serious miles and want a good bike. I'm not someone who will approach 1:10 for a sprint - I see myself as someone who would be happy finishing in 90 minutes - so speed isn't huge. But I do want something I can ride for my century this fall and my HIM next year. Finally - I want something that will last. Thoughts? |

I know there is a bike shop by my house that gives free service if you buy a bike from them, so I would really like to do that. Definitely shop around and try LOTS of different bikes in lots of different stores. Don't be rushed. Although you probably feel rushed because your bike is busted. SUCKS to be rushed. Went for 5.5 miler and came in 1:30 faster than previous best. Love taking time off. I do have a sore on the bottom of my left foot that feels like when I had a corn like thing on heel for over a year several years past. Plantar fasciatis maybe? It also may be time for new shoes. There are a couple of sales around but they are a couple of weeks off. So, it looks like I might have to ride in doors. However - patching my old bike up might be great because then I could ride back and forth between the two campuses where I work. Hell - that would burn up enough calories to have a second beer every now and then! In your opinion - what is the best bike company for the $$$ I'm thinking Trek. |

Ice it, take motrin, use a golf ball to loosen it up (a cold beer can or bottle works as well) and spend the time stretching it. It hurts like a bitc* Take care bud! |

Try track your food/drink for a week to see where you stand. You may be surprised. As for the drinking...I think the doc is crazy. I usually try not to drink Monday to Thursday, but have 2 or 3 Friday and saturday, sometimes more sometimes less. To quit completely, well that is a personal decision that is up to the individual, unless it is an obvious health risk. I say all in moderation. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another great morning in the pool. A month ago - I thought I had swum a mile - but found out later that someone had told me the wrong number of laps. Proud to report that I cranked out 72 lengths for a full mile. Just to make sure I hadn't miscounted - I swam an extra 100. My lats are pretty sore but I'm feeling pretty psyched to have met one of my yearly goals. As far as the bike goes - I took everyone's advice and spent some time today shopping around. I think I have decided that if I get a bike - it will be a Trek. Now to decide which one. To hedge my bets in case I stick with the old model - I bought a new tires... Who knows - I might be making a trip to the great white north for that bike auction... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thought I would check in with the group. March has been another dismal training month although I did get out for a bike ride this week and have run the past two nights after work. They are calling for rain here saturday and I work nights both Sat and Sun so may not get much more done until monday. I miss swimming (my gym closed, they went bankrupt, 47 million dollars in debt). We are starting at a gym that gives a discount through my work, but membership starts April 1st and it doesn't have a pool. I may just forget about tris for this year, concentrate on running and just general fitness and a healthy life. I do still follow all the thread updates and most of the rest of the group looks to be doing great. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went to the local running store and probably way overpaid for a pair of shoes. I got a new shiny pair of Ascics for $119. I usually get the bottom of the line Ascics on sale at the general sports store for $49. I had a little over 500 miles on my pair I was running in. The new ones seem to have a thicker heal, and the salesman was confident they would help the issue with my foot. That's an endorsement I could never get at the other store, I don't think it was worth $60 difference, but we'll see if it helps. I have been icing it at nights, taking Ibuprofen throughout the day, and way lessened my running this week. I have also been rubbing it out on the claw foot of the kitchen table (that's the closest to a golf ball I could find.) After I rub it for about 5 min. or so, it seems to feel much better for quite a while. I think I caught it early enough that I can maintain it through marathon in May, then rest it while I go to the bike specific training for HIM in August. I had planned a 13.6 mile sprint to see how fast I could go, which would be down from the 18.1 miler I did last week. This week, I have cut about 20% distance at least off of my runs. I think I'll shorten the 13.6 to a 4.6 or something, just to get out. I have a huge assignement for graduate school due on Tuesday, I could use the extra time/peice of mind to get it done. Next week, I think I'll ease back into it, and look forward to a 19 miler next weekend. I have to keep building if I want to hit 3:30 for my race time. Come "heel" or high water. 3:30 or BUST! |

I may just forget about tris for this year, concentrate on running and just general fitness and a healthy life. I do still follow all the thread updates and most of the rest of the group looks to be doing great. Thanks for checking in Cathy and I'm sorry to hear that you've had a tough month of training! It sucks when you aren't able to stick to your routine. I love your goal of concentrating in a healhy life. If you get to the end of April and realize that you aren't happy with your new gym and miss the sport of triathalon - than consider making some changes. And keep checking in - we'll be there to support you! |
