I have been sticking to the slow runs and building mileage gradually.  My legs always seem to be fine, no matter how much speed or distance I do.  I try to push myself on the bike, but even short rides seem to be hard on my legs.  I don't feel like my heart rate is the limiting factor- my legs just get so fatigued!  The swim seems to be similar- I feel like my arms get tired way before anything else.  I'm hoping that with putting more time into these disciplines that this will improve.

As Jonathon and Jeff said about the fatigue on your legs...............Get used to it because that will be part of your lifestyle now.  Training is fun and the pain is somewhat of a reminder/trophy of the work load your body can handle in ever increasing loads if you want to do it.

Also, I didn't think about it until later on today but since we live in the same town we could get together for a few swims of you like sometime.  I swim at South Side's natatorium for all of my swims if you would like to join me there on a scheduled night or if your Y allows visitors I might be able to get up there sometime too.  I do have one requirement though, your husband needs to be there with us.  Not necessarily in the water but at least in the building with us.  (It's an accountability thing that I think is a great idea for a healthy marriage.)

Let me know what you think.

Sooooo, if I train with you, does my fiance Kate have to be there?  Because she has already made comments about the previous running picture you had up and that's just awkward. haha!

Most definitley!  But that's just because you're so tall, dark and handsome, I don't know that I could control myself.Surprised

Umm, was the pic of me running from the swim to bike transition where my balding head was glaring in the sun?

Dirk – your new toy looks cool!  Enjoy!

Well, yesterday’s attempt to solve the “air swallowing” problem didn’t seem to have any effect. I was going at what I felt was an easy pace (though compared to last summer it is fast) of about 2:00 per 100 then rest 20-30 seconds.

I tried keeping my mouth open slightly and exhaling partly through the mouth. My mouth fills with water while I exhale through the nose so I’m sure I’m not swallowing any air and yet there were the same symptoms. I started experiencing the need to belch air after just my 3rd 100 yards and 1/2 hour post workout the “gas” pain was pretty severe.  I took a chewable gas relief pill about an hour after the workout and it took another hour until I was comfortable again.

I’m thinking now that it may be a combination of the swim plus food I’ve eaten during the day. I’ll try and get over to the pool in the morning next Monday and try a workout on a completely empty stomach and see if I get the same results.

Sorry to hear that Vero.  I definitely have felt more gassy during swims just from the motion and the position I think.  Definitely work on some trial and error to see what works for you so that when race day comes you'll have it sorted out.

I usually don't have any gassy feelings that have occurred other than random type stuff.  But I have a thought that maybe might help you.  Try doing some back stroke occasionally throughout your swims.  Maybe put one right in the middle.  Do 100 yards or so to possibly allow the air to move around a little differently and maybe you can feel a little more free to belch it out.  Don't worry about what you look like doing the stroke so much and just focus on trying to relieve the air build up.  I have no idea if it will work but it might put your body in a position just different enough to allow some relief.

Sure, that would be great.  I know that the Y allows visitors- I will have to check what the hours are for that.  I think the Y might work better because we can put the kids in childcare (I'm not sure if they are allowed at the natatorium that you swim at).  I could meet you at any of the Y's in town though.  Maybe we can figure out a time at the race tomorrow.

Sounds like a good idea.  The downtown or the one in Aboite (Jorgensons?) would be the best ones for me.  Seems like it would be kind of middle of the road for both of us.

bswcpa - 2012-02-10 3:49 PM Sweet, sweet, sweet new play toy, Dirk! Wish I could meet you guys at the race tomorrow but I just can't break away. Good luck to Allison and Dirk! Run fast so you don't freeze your fanny off.

One of these days we'll get you over this way.  On St. Patrick's Day next month I am looking at possibly running another race in Columbia City (halfway in between us)- the Big Green 8K.  It's taking place at Morsche's Park.  I haven't decided for sure if I want to run that one or the Kilt 5K.

On the sore/tired legs topic, here's an excerpt from a swim email I just got.  Even though it's for swimming, I think it applies to all three.  They are talking about the point at which a workout gets really hard and your brain is telling you to quit:

"This 'discomfort time' is the critical period where your body's systems are challenged so that after the session they adapt and you gain fitness. Without reaching this point you won't gain the fitness improvements you are looking for. So this 'discomfort time' is not just unavoidable when fitness training, it should be something you are actively seeking out.

The psychology here is very important, don't think: "God, this is really tough."

Instead, replace that thought with: "OK, this is what it is all about. Swim it out, one stroke and one lap at a time."

Embrace the discomfort as a place you want to be and you will have fundamentally changed your thinking. From there on training sets start to feel much easier."

Love this!!

Warren: I agree on your post about working past "tired" - the stress which must be overcome does push the body to adapt to the new stress level - got to be careful - tired vs pain - I've had friends confuse tired and pain. Tired is good-push through.

Dirk: we all will want a user report - give it a few good weeks - but that Garmin bad boy looks way to cool - and the specs read pretty awesome for tri-training.

Thanks Dina for the input.  I may explore the area if my achilles continues to act up after a week off.  It sounds like it could be a viable option because I don't want to go to a doc only to hear take some anti-inflammatories and rest it.  I know thast the drugs definitely help at times but as a rule I think drugs are over used and over prescribed as the docs get tired of hearing people ask for things to "help" them.

Dirk - I found this article extremely helpful for my Achilles.  I didn't want to waste time with a doctor or PT either.  After doing these exercises, stretching, and icing for five days, I'm ready to try a run today.

http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=19443

Curtis

Thanks for the article.  I just had some time to read it.  I have been doing some calf strengthening stuff occasionally but that is all.  It has been fine all week but, as the guy in the article described, I have only been walking on it or cycling.  I am kind of anxious to race tomorrow to see how it goes.

The weather doesn't sound good for the race though.  We have a winter weather advisory out until 4AM.  Luckily the race doesn't start until 2PM but it is going to be pretty cold, 24 for a high and no sun to melt the snow.  A PR may not happen.

Allison and Dirk hope you did great at the race today and that the cold stayed away till you were done. The windchill here again is ridiculous so I opted for my 7mile run on the treadmill. Finally a feeling of accomplishment I made it, usually I give up after 3 miles

Okay this run more, mostly slow thing is really working for me. I'm tired a lot, but I seem capable of doing a lot more on race day than I could do before.

A new PR this morning in the 4 mile Frosty Fun Run/Race. 3 weeks ago I did this same course in 34:11 today I did the same course in 31:43. It was a total mind over body thing to finish the last mile at that faster pace. My body was ready to walk, but I pushed it to finish. I even managed to finish 11th of 26 in my age group (40+) and was only 2 seconds behind the 10th place in my age group runner.

Bad - weather this morning was brutal - 16 and wind at 20 - ran anyway. But, I forgot a second wind proof hat, and my hat and gloves were soaked after 10 miles - ran 3 more and enough was enough - my Gatorade bottle was slushy-and gone, but my water bottle had frozen. I know better, but several bad moves caused this run to be stopped at 13, short of the planned 15.

Good - the swimming lesson at Carmel HS went very well. The beginner class had 12 people - but my class had only 2. Meg is one of the boys HS coaches. She teaches Total Immersion - TI. My $90 fee is a bargain, considering a TI class is $250---and I got a ticket worth 20 swims ($100)=deal. Learned: yes - I swim like a bulldozer. Lessons today were aimed at balancing more on the side. I can see where we'll be next week, and I'll practice the base position this week. Looking forward to swimming better. I'll report in 3 weeks, my impression of TI - but first impression is positive.

Joanne,  I'm glad to hear you gutted out that treadmill run.  Those longer one's are the absolute worst.  I can do 7 mile runs on the treadmill but they are mentally outrageous for me.

Vero,  That sounds like a very nice race!  A very solid improvement in such a short time frame.  Very nice!  I met someone today that doesn't subscribe to the theory of "run easy and run a lot" and it sounds like he needs to be taught this principle.  I won't say who this person might be but Allison knows him very, very well.  (Actually in our short conversation, I think he seems to be more interested in maintaining speed than getting faster.)

Paul,  I have had my water bottles freeze up on a lot of runs in the past too.  Luckily when that happens I don't require a lot of water due to the temps being low enough to not allow dehydration as quickly.

The swim instruction sounds like it is going to do some really good things for you in the next few weeks.

__________

My race report from today is up for your reading pleasure.  As usual it is pretty wordy.  Overall I am okay with my performance but I wasn't as mentally tough as I would like to have been.  The conditions for the running surface weren't the best either but mostly I wasn't as tough as I should have been.

Jeffy - I'm not making any recommendation to you with that story.  Just explaining why your ortho may not be moving toward surgery and why it seems he's just throwing drugs at it.  And also explaining that it's not a problem you can avoid, it's one you have to walk through.  And that physical therapy can be very, very beneficial.

I understand that they need to check every avenue of treatment and it can be discouraging at times. I'm making sure to keep an open mind and I keep up with my PT EVERY DAY! Pain or not.

quitarfrk75 - Just a thought (am I'm not sure what the reaction will be here) - Have you tried alternative therapies like acupuncture?

I've tried many times. While it is very relaxing it never did anything from a pain relief standpoint. I know it works for many, but just never did much for me. Meditation and positive reinforcement on the other hand has helped as far as keeping my mind in the right place. I believe it helps too some degree on a pain level and being able to cope with it.

Well, I got to update my training log today. I LOVE IT!!!! Just put in 10 miles on the bike and a 30 minute walk this morning. I wanted to get out and see where I am on my progress. With 3 days left of these damn steroids, they are helping. I believe I can also contribute 2 days off work, doing absolutely nothing at home, and lots of self reflection and meditation to keep the mind right. Even though I was going freakin nuts doing nothing.

I got my referral for a new Ortho and should be hearing from him by Tues. I just have to keep being positive and hopefully he can help. I've made my mind up that even if nothing more can be done and this is how I have to keep living, I won't let it defeat me! I keep my head up high and know this is just another hurdle and it can only make me more determined and stronger.

Thanks everyone!!!

I took TI about 5 years ago and a refresher a couple years ago, it has been the best thing I could have done for my swimming, now that I am finally swimming consistently I am able to use all that I learned to improve, I think you will find it extremely useful.

Awesome deal getting to do some workouts. You have to friend us if you want us to view your logs and give you some props/inspires.

I hope this new ortho has the answer.  You're staying the course as and you already know, attitude is important in these things.

Well, yesterday I didn't beat Dirk (lol), but I did succeed in both freezing my fanny off and dropping about 40 seconds off of my 5K time from 3 weeks ago.  I am still quite a bit off of my PR, however I am just happy that I am headed in the right direction.

For anyone who is interested, here is my race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=425156

As far as my husband goes, we'll just say that he and I have different goals.  He mostly trains and races occasionally just to appease me and spend time together.  Sometimes I wish that he would realize his potential, but other times I wonder if our young family could handle two seriously committed triathletes.  I am thankful that he is at least supportive of my efforts.  He sacrifices his own race time in order to push the kids in any stroller-friendly race that I can find.  For him, its more about fun and being together than winning the race.

I was looking at March races, and I came across one in Huntington, IN that is a free 5K and even has a t-shirt.  I imagine that it's not terribly far from you, Dirk, but I don't know how long of a trip it is from Warsaw to Huntington, Brenda.  I am attaching the flier for anyone interested.

Thanks for the link, Allison. No registration fee and a t-shirt - wow! I guess this is an outreach race for the church. Good for them. I already registered for my March race (being tax season I allow myself this one). It's in Winona Lake and benefits World Compassion. It's about the largest 5K held here, it's chip timed and is a run/walk (strollers allowed). If interested in coming this direction, here's the link: http://www.w-c-n.org/?q=node/39 Of course, you can't beat the cost of the free race.

Allison and Dirk - congratulations on a good race and I'm glad you managed to brave the cold. Did you get to play with your new toy during the run Dirk?

Stan - glad to hear you were able to get some biking and walking in. I have my fingers crossed the new ortho has some new ideas.

Matt - Free 5k? I wish that was closer!

Vero - Awesome race man - that's a big increase in PB  in only three weeks!

Paul - That sucks about the water freezing up. It sounds like a pretty brutal day, I don't think you can be blamed for cutting the workout a little short!

Personal note - I managed 9.2 miles on the treadmill today. Our community gym has little TVs on top, so I watched "Modern Marvels: Chocolate" on the history channel. Not the most interesting show, but amusing enough.

I was out with a buddy who's going through a tough time Thursday night, and with my in-laws Friday night, so I missed my long bike this week. I'll find time to fit it in later, but not having a trainer and only having limited light sucks.

Gotta run!

Great races you two.  Tough conditions and some good times.

I had a great long run yesterday.  The first hour was a bit of a struggle, and then I felt like I "woke up" and the remaining 40 minutes felt like I was floating without effort.  I didn't want to stop but the time was up.  Is this the runner's high?

Sounds like a runners high to me Warren.  I haven't had one for a long time either..........I'm jealous!!

For those that read my RR, I checked the official results (thanks Brenda for getting them) to see how close the 2 men that finished close to me were.  The first one was 2 seconds ahead of me and was competing in the 50-54 AG (51).  The one behind me was 2 seconds in back of me and he was in the 55-59 AG (57).  Man those guys are fast!!!  Can I be that fast in ummm?....25 years when I reach their age?

Us old guys are fast.  It depresses me to think I'm about to go up in AG next weekend and the guys in that group are no slower!  Jeez, I though I'd get a break at 50.

And love him or hate him, pretty impressive effort for Lance.  2nd place in that field and a 1:17 is notice that's this is no publicity stunt.
