I'm headed to the mountains in a few hours, but I'm goign to try to get something in before then.  Then lots of riding while there, I hope!

Good luck to Blanda and Jason!

43 mile ride done this morning.  Perfect day for a ride, and I focused on hill repeats to exhaustion.  My legs are toast but I feel good, accomplished!  Now off for a work meeting (second one this week even though it is technically a "week off").    Purchased 2 new water bottles the other day and on monday's ride, despite duct tape it was launched.  I was pleasantly surprised today to see it sitting upright on the side of the road waiting for me.  I really appreciated this, although I did not drink out of it as one never knows.......

                                         Jim

Nice ride Jim.  Are the bottles narrower?  Are the cages aluminum?  If so you can bend them a bit to hold tighter.  I've succesfully used velcro straps to hold down behind-the-seat bottles.

Michael:  Bottles are pretty wide.  My cages are not aluminum either.  Challenge for me is that to get to where I ride I have to take a 10 min path down a sidewalk running/bike trail and it has lots of bumps and a few bridges.  That's the only place I really ever have a problem.  Yesterday I duct taped much better and it worked.  It doesn't look pretty, but it does the trick.

Blanda:  Nice swim, definitely good for the confidence.

Jason:  Good luck on your run!

Randy:  No particular plans for weekend.  I'm STILL (ho hum) waiting for my summer schedule.  I just did a 2 loop run around a lake by my house.  8.2 miles, it was perfect!  Now I'm jumping on the Harley and riding to visit my brother who lives 100 miles away.

Group:  So how do you determine it's time to get new running shoes?  Do you keep them for xx number of miles, or do you change them out when they start to feel like the cushioning is worn, or some other reasons?

Hi All,

Sorry to have been AWOL the last couple of weeks.  We got our daughter packed and off to Morocco, followed by our 30th college reunion, followed by a business trip to Boston for me (that included two very late nights with old friends).  Then I had to catch up for lost time and we're in the midst of quite the University shake-up which is creating a bunch of speculation and concern about what's to come.  Anyway, still catching up, but seem to be getting back in the swing of things on the training front.  Had a nice ride up on the Parkway this morning.  Tomorrow, back in the pool (been way too long).

Missed alot of action around here it seems... some great race results, another biking accident (Michael, didn't you have one two years ago or so?) and a bunch 'o miles by everyone - well done!

I was thinking about giving a local tri a shot on Sunday that I haven't done in awhile, but there's also a Father's Day 4 mile run on the same day that my father-in-law wants to do, so that wins :-) At 79, anytime he's up for a run, I'm there!  He's been training for it, feels ready, and the weather is cooperating (not too hot for June in Virginia).

Have a great weekend, everyone and good luck to the racers!

Stu

Stu-glad to have you back. Sounds like you have been really busy.  Father's Day run sounds like a good time!

Jimmy-running shoes.  I log all my workouts on BT and use the Equipment Tracker  to keep up with how many miles I have on a pair.  Some shoes can go 400-500 miles while a racing shoe may only be good for 150-200 (or less).  I've been running in Saucony Mirage and I start looking to swap out around 350 miles.  Also using the Saucony Kinvara II and since its a bit lighter I figure they are good for 250-300 miles.  My general rule is the lighter the shoe the shorter the lifespan.  That may not be correct but makes sense to me.  Not sure about the Harley trip though......don't they sell any quality motrocycles up where you live?

Rene--You out there???? Curious to hear how you are doing with BSLT coming up.

Michael-have fun...BE SAFE!

Got my run in. Really was not too bad.  Humidity must have been a bit less.  Didn't have that "melting" feeling I sometimes get on super hot days.

Randy

Another one of the MIA members finally checking in.
I've entered the cleaning the house phase of tapering for BSLT. At least the boys know that they can always count on a clean house right before my big races! I'm okay. Working through a few things (mental) about the race and course.

Michael- glad you are okay. It is really nice that the driver is willing to take responsibility for her actions and pay for your bike. Very nice race results. I would love to have those times.. then when you add in the accident it makes them even more impressive.
Blanda- loved your recent post about swimming 2000 yards. Remember when you first started swimming a few months ago? Look at how far you've come!
Jimmy- how are things going with the week off?
Randy- anything coming up on your race calendar?
Jen- How did they do the body fat testing? I've forgotten how to access the BF portion on our scales..
Mainly because I really don't want to know!
Mike- how is the new bike? Does it have a name?
Jason- outstanding race!
Stu- the Fathers Day race sounds like a lot of fun.

Sorry if I left anyone out. I've got a lot to catch up on!

My legs are still pretty darn sore from last Sunday's race. Only 39 hours out from a half marathon. Randy, like you said, it should be interesting.

This particular HM has a two mile stretch straight up a hill at anywhere from 8-12% grade. It is going to be brutal, but at the top is "inspiration point" which is a phenomenal view of one of the prettiest lakes in the world and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. I have ridden the hill many times but have never run it. Of course you have to run almost two miles back down which should complete the destruction of my quads. I am not expecting any kind of fast time. In fact, depending on how the legs feel on Saturday morning I might just take it easy and enjoy the run instead of racing. We will see.

Anyone else got something scheduled for this weekend?

Hello everyone from Spain! Not a lot of working out lately, but tons of walking! I got a run in this morning, didn't track distance or anything, just ran for 30 minutes!

Tonight was great, we watched Spain play Ireland here in Granada...man, what an atmosphere! I'm going to try to get a couple more runs in before I'm back next Tuesday. Talk to everyone then!

Rene: As I was swimming I was thinking back on when I first started. I couldn't even do half a lap! Then I was resting after every one, then at some point my instructor wouldn't let me rest on the wall anymore and now I feel like I've been swimming forever. Slowly, but forever, haha!

Enjoy you taper time!

Good luck, Jason!

Stu, sounds like you've been busy. Enjoy the Father's Day run with your FIL!

Jaime: So jealous you watched Spain live!!

Michael: Hope the scratches are healing up well and you have a great time in the mountains.

Enjoy your weekend, guys!

Stu, Blanda, Jason - enjoy your races this weekend!

Rene - It was called the "Bod Pod" and is based on air displacement.  Here's some info on it if you're curious:

http://www.cosmed.com/hires/marketing_literature/product_news/Product_News_Air_Displacement_EN_print.pdf

I am heading out tomorrow for a yoga retreat. I plan to do nothing but swim, run, yoga, kayak and camp for the next three days. It couldn't have come at a better time, since I have my very first race of the season the following weekend and this will keep me occupied and focused, both mentally and with training.  Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Jen- your plans for the weekend sound wonderful!

Blanda and Jason- good luck at your races!

Michael- have fun riding in the mountain. You'll be more than ready for MOO if you keep that up all summer!

Blanda/Jason/Stu-good luck this weekend!

Nothing too exciting going on down here. Son starts his Summer job tomorrow. He has to be at work at 5am so I imagine I'll be up early as he stirs around getting ready for work. Today I have 3200 swim scheduled then a hard 1 hour bike workout this evening. Tomorrow is hour run with hill repeats. Sunday is 1.5 hour hard bike followed by 30 min brick run at hard pace.  Lots of "hard" workouts over the next couple of days.  I'm 3 weeks out from Chattanooga Olympic so I guess now is the time to get the hard work in.

For those that recommended "The Wire" on Netflix thanks!  Through the first disc and its good.

Enjoy the weekend.

Randy

Anyone else curious about the WTC announcement at 12:00 pacific today? I'm crossing my fingers that they've moved the date/location of IMTX. Rumors say WTC is announcing another IM course or addressing the Lance/Ban issue.

UPDATE: Lake Tahoe Ironman in September.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

1:28:57. A HM PR for me. Last 5K under 19 minutes. 1st AG. 5th overall. Pretty small race. Winner went 1:19:50.

A lot of hill climbing.

I needed to have a good running race after struggling in Boston and at Eagleman.

I will post more details when I have better Internet access.

Awesome job, Jason!! Congratulations on the PR!

I'm up early to get some food and fluids in me. Played 90 hard minutes of soccer on the wing last night. Ended with some cramping in the calves. UGH. Whenever I play with men I have this needs to outdo them. Especially the ones that think women can't play. I've learned my lesson. I'm tight and don't know how much juice I have in the legs. I'll make sure there's enough women to play next time there's a game the night before a triathlon and stay home.

The sprint went better than I expected. I figured out how to sight comfortably without breaking my stride! The crowd was small today so I started right up at the front for the swim and soaked up the jostling, kicking, scratching, and such. My focus was on practicing sighting and keeping my form when I'm tired.

On the bike, I just survive those on my mountain bike. I did learn a little something on gears from the friend I rode with this past week that helped me change on and off the hills without slowing my pace.

The run was actually comfortable! I thought I'd have dead legs from the game last night, but I actually felt pretty good after the stiffness coming off the bike wore off.

It was a great "comeback" in terms of confidence after the Xterra. The most heart warming thing was the welcome I got from all the familiars faces. They knew about my Xterra DNF and from what I've heard where just as hear broken as I was over it. So much support. I love my tri' community!

Didn't time it myself. The results should come out soon.

Hope you're all enjoying your weekend and your races!

Blanda, Congrats on your race! Way To Go!!!! Look at you moving up to the front at the swim! I'm almost tempted to go back to our first mentor group archives and dig up one of your swimming posts! You have really come a long way in a few months! What an inspiration you are to the rest of us.

Blanda-FANTASTIC!  So fun to follow your swim progress.  Sounds like you have become a confident swimmer and racer. Maybe next race you start with a couple hundred yards of butterfly?

Headed out for bike/run.  Will check in later.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday.

Had a good/hard bike and run this morning. Got home and took an ice bath (with a frosty beer to fortify me) then lunch, watched some soccer, nap, now U.S. Open Golf.  We did Father's Day dinner last night since son had to work all day today.  Daughter gave me the most awesome telescoping back scratcher....swimming seems to keep me itchy

Thanks, Rene and Randy! It's been an experience learning how to swim, that's for sure! I think it's been entertaining for my fellow swim team members to have me aboard. Painful too, as a few have run into my flailing arms... even though they are in the lane next to me and not sharing mine.  Embarassed

Hope you Dads had a relaxing Father's Day Sunday! They gave my husband 1/2 the day off so we could hang out on skype. You know, so he can watch the little ones fight, dance, color, and stand on their heads on the couch all in that tiny space that fits in the camera! Stuff he misses dearly. Laughing

Today my Step-sister got remarried so took a day off to rest, which really means I ate too much celebrating, ha HA!

Have a great Monday. Doing a 10K run tomorrow on a hot, hilly course to make up for today's slackity slackin'.

Congrats to Jason and Blanda!  Jason, to have a PR coming off the HIM is outstanding!!

Had great weather for the 4 miler.  My time was 3 seconds slower than last year, but under 8 min/mile pace which is pretty much my "don't kick myself" goal in any race under 10K.  Would love to break 7:45 before its too late ;-

My father-in-law won his age group... well, truth be told, he WAS his age group... but that is winning it in my book.  Came in at 38.30 or so and charged up for 2 more 5Ks this summer and maybe a 10K this Fall.  Great to see... he had been kind of down on his running fitness last year as he couldn't put together a good string of training weeks.

Weight remains in the 198-201 range.  I'm just being a lazy butt when it comes to eating appropriately.  Completely self-motivation issues.  The only good thing is that my vegetable garden is going great guns, so it has been delightful to have fresh veggies from out back at least once/day.

Have a great Monday everyone.  Me, I'll be rabble-rousing this afternoon.  Time to take to the streets!

Stu

I had a decent weekend. Wife and kids left for a trip on Saturday morning. Plenty of time to work out. Got a 30 mile ride, 4 mile run and 1 mile OWS in on Saturday. The swim was not very good as we had to look up every couple of strokes to make sure the boats don't hit us. I guess we'll have to have a canoe support person with us soon. Played racquetball for 90 minutes this morning and got a 1 hour bike ride tonight.
