The one question I have is how they come up with your anaerobic threshold based on your VO2 max.  I'm assuming the test involves going on a treadmill or bike from 0 to whatever over a specific period of time, and that you're basically just barely hanging on at the end.  I'm just not clear how that works.  For the anaerobic/lactate tests, I understand (after warming up go all out for 20 minutes and use a formula to determine LTHR).

I do get the whole variance on "did I push myself hard enough?" when testing LTHR (and it's a valid concern, IMO).

I wonder when Matt or Steve are going to chime in and tell us to stop over-analyzing it and just go run.  Smile

I'm not quite sure how they come up with HR, but I *believe* they stop the test when the oxygen consumption peaks, or levels off (something in the air measurement to that effect). Whereas they used to go until the tester cried uncle. This would be the difference in stopping points Troy talked off. Falling off the back vs stopping just before it was going to get really hard. The idea of it is rather simple, but the ability of the machine to do the job well enough comes into play. I know Shane has some very good insight on that part of it. Has he been posting here in a while? He's explained it in Tri Talk before. I'm in too much of a rush to make sure all details are right.

The LT run test does just fine when the test run is a fairly consistent and repeatable route.

V02Max is not the same as LT. They measure different things. On some people there's a correlation: LT = 80-85% of V02Max. The only real way to measure LT is by taking blood samples during exercise. While V02Max is a measure of fitness, it isn't all that useful in setting training zones. LT is. You can get an estimate of LT for bike and run from a field test, which is probably what the link above explains.
I'm not surprised a big box gym would take people's money by providing this test. I am surprised that they would give such a strenuous test. Must have good liability insurance. In a study of masters endurance athletes I participated last year, they used V02SubMax as a proxy due to the danger of having a bunch of 40+ people working out so hard.

TWITCHY ONES --

Great discussion here on HR and LT and VO2max, and I have an odd thought or two ---- but it'll have to wait a few days.  I'm heading off to MA for a few days, and should return late Sunday evening (but hopefully in time TO SEE THE PATS BE THE FINAL STOP IN RAY LEWIS' CAREER.

Have fine weekends, all, and play nicely together here!

Thank you, but that goes back to my original question....does AT = LT or are they two different things?  If I read you correctly, you are using them synonymously?

What the gym test says it does is establish your BMR, AT and aerobic zones AND V02 max via the V02 testing.

Here's a great link to explain it better: http://www.coachtroy.com/public/536.cfm

I use to have a link on one of my PC's that was to an article provided by one of the coaches on BT that went into the explanation of all this stuff.  Can't find it...

AventureBear did have a few words about it here.

Also here's an explanation that may help you.  In this article it explains that VO2max does not = LT.  Two people with same VO2max at the same pace may have totally different LT points/pace, hence training zones.

I believe it was Coach Ricci that stated the field LT tests (when done properly) have correlated very well to lab blood determined LT tests. (yes, in the infamous 220-age thread he stated this: "I have been tested numerous times in the lab and with the 30' test and the numbers are within 1 beat of each other. I have seen this with all of my athletes as well. As we say in racing, the numbers don't lie.")

Excellent info all of you, thank you!

My plan is to investigate EXACTLY what is being measured during the gym's test.  If they are really just guestimating my AT/LT based off my V02 max number, I'd say that's no better than me estimating my AT/LT by doing a field test using perceived exertion, yes?

Steve,

Thanks for the detailed answer to my HM post. There is a lot to think about there. The one point you made that I never even considered (but makes a lot of sense) is that I scheduled too many races close together. My thinking when signing up for the HM was: I want a HM on my resume before the year ends and there is one in Indianapolis this weekend, so problem solved.

There are times that I find that I may call my self a triathlete, but I am still a football player at heart (and weight too by the way.) So what I rolled my ankle. Me run anyway.

Have a good run.  Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you.  I'd really like to add a HM to my resume but just now I'm really struggling just to get back to running at all.

2,800 yds in the pool this morning, 1,800 main set. Trying to work on how much I can do there while also being able to put some effort into a bit longer ride later in the day. Too gassed last week. About all main sets for me are around t-pace.

Nice!  I'm not in the pool yet, just trying to get back into the bike/run structure.  Today was BT cycling program week 2 day 3 workout.  The ten 30' intervals felt too easy!

Guys, I realize I haven't showed my face here recently... I still exist. Laughing  I guess I've been trying to figure out how to move forward!  My elbows are still feeling irritation since my everyday activities are constantly aggravating them. Undecided  My hip issue has improved.  I haven't seen a physical therapist yet, but plan to. (Still need to get a script from my doctor, haven't been able to get in.)  I think with the PT I'll ask her both about my hips and elbows.

My half marathon is less than 3 months away and that's a bit scary to me!  Now I don't think I will be following any training plan very closely.  I'll have few types of runs I'll want to get in each week or every other week.  Otherwise the focus will be on frequency, getting those minimum 30 minute runs in, as I am still trying to go for the 100 runs in 100 days!  (I'm a few days behind as it stands!)

30 sec, not 30 min, right? Wink

Trainer for me. Sufferfest vids. Hell Hath No Fury, Extra Shot, The Wretched. 3 x 20', 1 x 3:20, 1 x 35'. All at 88-90% FTP. ~2:25 overall, very solid ride. Gotta love that last hill in The Wretched, and then chasing Jens in the flats.

What I'm trying to do with my riding is basically have 2 hard effort rides during the week where I'm working at or just over threshold for a bit. Then the rest of the riding (both in those and the any other rides) will be to build up huge amounts of training stress in aerobic zones. I'll push the efforts in larger blocks like this as much as I think I can do without hindering my ability to hit the 2 hard efforts up where I want to. So if I'm riding more, I can back the effort down some. If I ride a bit less, then I need to pick it up to get the same training stress, but I'm trying to keep a generally strong average across the board for these more aerobic rides.

This one was pushing up to the lower edge of what's considered threshold area training. I'll see how it goes Monday in hitting the higher intensity part.

Now, do I go for a run with the wind blowing at 28+ mph?

Indoor Sprint Triathlon this morning. It was a different format. You could do the segments in any order you wanted and transitions were not counted. 500 yd pool swim, 4-mile exercise bike, and 2-mile run on a mini 1/15 mile track. That really messed with my head. I decided to run first because I wanted to see how fast I could go on fresh legs. I swam second as a break for my legs, and I biked last.

Ended up 3rd place overall. Run was 12:35 (6:18 / mile), swim was 7:02 (1:24 / 100 yds; slower than I expected due to running first, but fastest overall), and bike was 13:02 (18.4 MPH). I was pretty happy with my times, particularly since I haven't really run since September.

There were photographers there from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Jewish Chronicle (event was at the JCC), so we'll see what kind of press it gets.

Got in my first day of the year on my mtn bike!  So much fun.

A little sore after a day of teaching my daughter to snowplow and a little skiing.  Lifting her up is definitely a workout.  Can I count 4 hours of teaching skiing and 1.5 hours of skiing as a workout?  she can now stop and turn right.  Hopefully tomorrow we can work on turning to the left.

Dave - your sprint sounds like fun.  And, a pretty enviable pace in the water.  I'd be more like 10:39-ish for 500 yds and a LOT slower on the run.

Locally, we've got an indoor Sprint coming up that I might enter.  It's a bit different in that instead of distances it'll be 15 minute swim; 15 minute T1 (different building); 30 minute bike (stationary bikes); (no T2 - hop off the bike & run); 20 minute run up and down stairs.  Everyone gets points for how far they go in the allotted times.  The main reason for the Sprint is the get together afterwards.  Should be fun.

Digitalrain - I read your report and commented there.  Glad you had a good run.

Moonrocket - Skiing can be counted as a workout if you want it to.  If you keep your logs here on BT then go to your log and click on "Training" then scroll down to "Sports" then in the list of sports find skiing and highlight it and then click on "add sports" and enter your time for today.  I'm amazed at how long the list of sports is.  Last winter I even logged some snow-shoveling days.

I'm Back!!!!

First --- MIKE, congrats on the Ravens.  They deserved that one big-time, and the Pats sure did not.  I hope I'm not haunted for the rest of my life by the image of Brady "turtling" short of what he needed for a first down at a critical time.  That may have been the ultimate tipping point in the evolution of qbs, pointing to the fact that the more mobile and brave ones are The future.

Second --- SHANA, fine work with your first half marathon!  I loved the photos and your report, and all I will say for now is that the h-m distance rewards those who can pull off successful training for it.  I just say that because you note the absence of dedicated training for it in your report, and I hope you keep the enthusiasm going for more h-m in the future.  I bowed at your photo of the 11-mile marker......and kind of salivated over the photo of the medal -- superb logo and overall design!

Third --- Ah, back at those indoors triathlons, eh?   I would've done it your way, R then S then B, doing the run fresh and then getting onto the bike wet --- perfect!  And how did your running legs respond to getting to go first??

I ahve to get into the Ottawa and try to start Lynn's car, parked at a wind-swept train station lot since Thursday, and the past few days being highly windy and highly cold.  My best guess ---- I'll need to call AAA.Yell

Thanks ya'll. I had a blast. I'm definitely doing another and I'll be ready next time.  I thought about waiting and doing Rock n Roll New Orleans but I'm glad I chose to stay home and do this one.  It was the BEST organized and staffed race I've ever done.

I'll swim today to ease my sore legs and I have a indoor triathlon coming up at my YMCA soon. My SO wants to do the 300 yd swim while I do the 15 min spin and 1 mile run.  1st outdoor tri is March 24 GirlPower in NO.
