Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I made it! It was pretty much a nightmare between SC and Atlanta; the roads were solid ice! It was slow going, but luckily my car didn't seem to have any problems. I'll tell you one thing: I'll never buy anything but a Subaru again! I saw more than a few cars in ditches and off the side of the road, but I trucked right on through. Once I got through Atlanta, which thankfully was traffic-free, things cleared up a lot. I'll probably get a swim in tomorrow morning, and then a run tomorrow afternoon. Good times! |

I got a good 5am swim in this morning, just made my own sets up, but felt good and strong. I wouldn't say this at 4:50am, but it sure is a good feeling for 9 o'clock to roll around and know that I've already gotten a workout in for the day! |

I'm currently in my PJS WFH watching the snow pile up outside. We're expecting somewhere from 6-12" of snow which may turn to rain later, then back to snow. EEK! AND +1 on the Subaru!! I'm on my second, as is DH (who actually went to work today). BACK TO WORK. |

You sure you're gonna have time for tris this summer? ![]() Probably not, but my early A race is June 7th and my Baby is due July 17th... So that should be ok... We'll see how things look for my late season A race in September. Went for a 4mi run in the slush... Was suppose to be longer but one of the roads was really bad so I just turned around and did another loop around my neighborhood. I really wish I had a trainer b/c then I could keep the bike going this week... Glad I got that one ride in yesterday and here's to hoping it all clears up by the weekend! On that note... My wife thinks I'm crazy... But that's why she loves me ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear everyone is hunkering down during the storm! For once, it's you southerners and east coasters that are getting the goods. Enjoy it! Today is a day of the 2s! Drum roll please.....first the first time ever I swam a 2:00/100 yards! Now I know that isn't fast to anyone else in this group, but it was a goal I have wanted to achieve for a VEEEERRRRRY long time. This new Masters class and improved attitude is really paying off. Oh and I also lost 2lbs since we started our weigh ins! See, the day of the 2s! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jamie - All due respect to you sir, but you're crazy for making the trip through GA during that storm. I don't doubt your ability to drive in such weather, but Georgians in general are incompetent with dry roads, much less one of the biggest winter storms in the history of our fine state. I am happy you got to your destination safely though! triathlonpal07 - Congrats on the coming birth of your child. I'm anxious to hear what sex it is. I've got friends who have been through a combined total of three pregnancies in the last year alone and one of them refused to find out what the sex of the child was until birth. As fun as that sounds on the surface, I would go bananas not knowing for 9 months! Hopefully your apartment management isn't stubborn either. The management here is borderline incompotent and I'm really wishing I hadn't signed that lease extension last semester. Suzy - I know I'm a ways off from even contemplating the possibility, but I would be lying if I say I wasn't jealous of that swim time! Nice going. To all: The ice cleared out in Carrollton much faster than anticipated and it looks like I can get out on my bike ride tomorrow. It's been over a week and I've been longing for it! Queen's "Bicycle" has been running through my head for quite a bit the last few days. I do have a question to those who reside in the US: When you first signed up for USA triathlon, how long did it take for the membership card/information packet to get to you? My wait is about to approach 4 full weeks, but it's understandable considering that we had two significant winter storms during that period. However, I want to get a gauge in place so I don't contact them prematurely about the problem. EDIT: Just remembered a second question I meant to ask. When it comes to early morning workouts, how do ya'll typically handle it? I've typically eaten a combination of 1 banana, a couple teaspoons of agave nectar and about 3 tbsp of peanut butter, gone on my workout, then came back and cooked breakfast (2 scrambled eggs, 1 banana, and cottage cheese). I've heard arguments that this is a good idea, and others that say this is a bad idea and that I shouldn't eat anything before a workout. I'm not going to be crossing more than an hour for quite some time for the workouts, so what would be the best way to handle it so weight can drop? I did shed 5 pounds this week and would like to drop a bit more. Edited by PhoenixM 2014-02-13 5:17 PM |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The Icepocalypse is leaving the South. Yesterday was a mess. Lost power at 9:00 last night and just got it back an hour ago. Many friends who live in older neighborhoods with more mature trees have been out for 36 hours and counting. Lots of downed trees and powerlines. Funny thing...the weather this afternoon was gorgeous. Unfortunately, the roads were still pretty icy, so nothing outdoorsy. Stayed at home, cooked on the charcoal grill and stared at one another. ![]() Run planned for tomorrow and then some cycling and swimming this weekend. Going to be in the 60s! Husband leaves for Bucaramanga, Colombia on Sunday and will be gone for a week, so lots of time for training if the leg cooperates. |

When I'm traveling, I often drink coffee in the room and then head out for my hour run. However, most of the time, I still eat something before I do my first workout. It is something small, nearly all carbs and very low in fat and protein. That is usually a piece of sprouted grain bread with honey or small bowl of "make it yourself" oatmeal. Your banana would be a reasonable thing to consume without all the other stuff if you don't like my food choices. I really don't think you need the agave or PB before the workout. If you really like that combo, I would reduce the quantity of both. Those are VERY high calorie items. |

When doing an a.m. workout that is less than an hour I usually have a mini clif bar(100 cal) or even a gel, just because I don't like working out with nothing on my stomach. And coffee, must have coffee. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on your 2s Suzy! And Bryan - I got my renewal stuff reallly fast. I think I renewed in October and it came quickly - so maybe it's the time of year. Can you email them? Also I don't eat in the AM before my workout. If I'm going to be working out longer than an hour I'll take some heed in my waterbottle (electrolytes and calories). I'm never longer than 1.5 hours in the am - just don't have time before work! Snow has stopped now but they say it's temporary and we're getting more in the overnight. I have a long run to do and I may put it off until Saturday because tomorrow am will most likely be spent clearing the driveway for the THIRD time in this storm! I can't complain though. I love all this snow! Hope to snowshoe on Sunday too! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy-great job on the sub 2:00. Keep up the good work! Bryan-if you need a memebership card you should be able to go online and print one off. Of course you will likely need your membership number. They may have put that in your confirmation email. If not email them for the number and you should be able to go on the USAT site and print out a membership card. Looks likj some nice weather headed my way. Sunny and close to 70 on Sunday. WooHoo! |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan...I'm with some of the others on maybe not even worrying about pre-workout fuel on a shorter a.m. workout. If you feel like you need something in your stomach then maybe just the banana. Well, I did utilize the newly recommended FTP for tonight's ride and I;m just not sure. I hit all the numbers for the whole two hour ride but HR was super high for the entire two hours. In fact my average HR was higher than the recommended LTHR from my test yesterday. LOL...obviously my LTHR can't be correct if I exceeded it for two hours. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to be getting out of these workouts and I wonder if 2 hours of riding near threshold is more harmful than helpful. Like Randy recommended yesterday, I plan on at least doing the two more rides this week at the new rate and then maybe I can reassess. Maybe I should just stop looking at HR altogether... |

I do a good part of my training in the morning before breakfast, and I rarely consume any calories beforehand. If I'm looking at something like 2 hours I'll drink some sports drink but generally I train in a fasted state in the morning. I might take a sip of something sweet to wake me up, but we're talking like 10-15 calories' worth. This morning I did 90 minutes on the trainer without anything, but it was Z2 where you're supposed to be burning fat anyway. After a good morning training session my typical breakfast is two eggs, some ham, cheddar cheese, either on a whole wheat wrap or English muffin, a piece of fruit, and the milkshake-like substance I call coffee. I dunno...maybe 800-900 calories total? Nutrition is SUCH a personal thing... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Suzy- Congrats on your swim break through! It's amazing how hard it is to take time off the swim. Obviously that masters class and your new outlook is paying off! Bryan- one year my USAT card never showed up. You can go online and print off a paper copy if you need one before it shows up. I don't eat before morning workouts. I don't really consider it a fasted state. There just doesn't seem to be a need to eat anything that early in the morning. We started off the day at 28 and it was in the high 50's this afternoon. I'm looking forward to a few warmer days this weekend.

Like Randy recommended yesterday, I plan on at least doing the two more rides this week at the new rate and then maybe I can reassess. Maybe I should just stop looking at HR altogether... HR can be a funny thing. So many factors influence it. My heart rate is always high if I do a bike workout first thing in the morning. I had a HARD bike workout this evening and the avg was maybe 3-5 bpm lower than I would have expected. Why? Don't know. I was on the road all day....did hydrate well so maybe that played a part. I am consistent about getting 7-8 hours sleep. I use HR as more of an add on if I'm doing a bike workout. Power/watts is the number that dictates the workout. I've been training with power for 4 years so I know that my HR can vary disproportionately (sp?) to power output. My coach uses a pretty solid warm up for most bike workouts and I can usually get a feel for how I will perform in the main set based on how I feel in the warm up.....coincidentally lower HR during warm up typically leads to a better performance when I hit the hard stuff. Tonight was one of those nights...HR low from the beginning.....performance better than expected. Now come Summer I don't really even look at HR because I know it will be high due to the heat/humidity. Early morning workouts? No food but usually will mix a very light bottle of nutrition if I'm going to workout for more than 45 minutes. Probably don't need it as I cannot ever remember a time that I felt like I was bonking in an early morning workout.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by jmhpsu93 Nutrition is SUCH a personal thing... Absolutely. I can't NOT eat before I workout in the AM. I'll bonk within minutes. I just constantly need food, but I tend to process it pretty fast. I can wake up at 4:30, have breakfast and be in full swing of my workout by 5:10-5:15. Suzy, great work on the 2's. What a great feeling to break a wall down like that. I manned the snowblower and shoveled for about 2 hours then the effin plow made one last pass the second I got inside so I went back out around 8:30, found that when I was done I was kind of amped up so I jumped on the trainer for 30 minutes. Better than nothing. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As far as morning nutrition goes it varies for me based on intensity. If I am doing an endurance workout I'll stick with little to no food. However, if I have a high intensity workout planned, I'll eat a bowl of oatmeal or similar breakfast food. After the workout I'll usually have chocolate milk to recover (if it's an hour or longer) and then after I finish stretching and have had a shower I will have eggs and peanut butter toast (we make our own 100% whole wheat bread.... Mmmmm so good ![]() Anyway, just my two cents. The way I look at it, as others have said before, the low intensity workouts should be burning fat anyway, and the high intensity workouts give you a chance to test what will work for a race day morning when you need to fill the tank to go hard). -Nathan |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for your feedback ya'll; I'll give the no-food option a shot tomorrow on my bike ride, though I'll be dipping into my electrolyte energy drink a bit. On the side, I just discovered that my measuring tape starts at 4.5 centimeters rather than zero centimeters, so all my measurements have been flubbed by that much. I have no idea why it's designed that way, but I'm not complaining since EVERYTHING looks better now. :D Edited by PhoenixM 2014-02-13 11:34 PM |
