So this will be my first IM branded race.  What kind of schwag do we get at 70.3's?  I know we get a medal and a shirt, but do we get a Finisher's cap?  Does anyone know?

usually a headsweats hat, maybe a really cool water bottle, some awesome muscle rub, a gel pack, tons of flyers for great stuff to buy.  ( lots of scarcasm here)

The fulls have been getting pretty sweet workout bags though.

New to the site - already found some great info!

This is going to be my first tri experience ever, looking forward to it!  I rode the course a few weeks ago and it wasn't too bad - first hill a few miles from T1 is not very fun but then nothing too terrible until Snow Canyon... make sure you have some gas left for that!

The atlete guides is out   http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/ironman-70.3/st.-george/athletes/athlete-guide.aspx      And it appear there is 2 course changes on the bike course.

1.  Were NOT turning into quail creek state park, instead we have a turn around at highland parkway (at mile 25).

2. At mile 37ish, we make a turn on to 2000 north  and right on 2100 west - this is by the softball field and on to a bike path.

So... I see two bike path were going to be on now (no pass zone).

Do you think it'll be too cold to wear a sleeveless wetsuit. I have no issues with cold water being raised surfing in cold California water...but I don't want to freeze either.

Thoughts??

You'll be fine in a sleeveless.  Especially since you're used to CA ocean water temps.  The resevoir isn't that cold.

I'm swimming in a sleeveless.  I also throw on a neoprene cap under my race cap.  Mostly to keep my ear plug wax in place.  ( prone to ear infections)

Excellent! I do not like swimming in a full wetsuit.

Anyone else had a chance to preview the bike course that could provide a report?

I was asking about the climb up Snow Canyon and the bike course in the Utah state forum hoping to get some info from locals familiar with it. There's some good responses and a few strava links for the hills too, link below.

Question for the experienced and really anyone.

Do you fill your bottle cages with your own bottles?

I was thinking of mixing my own electrolyte mix and just picking up a water bottle from the first aid station on the bike and rotating that out with the course aid stations waters....Good idea or Bad?

thanks,

I usually get a bottle of water (one that fits in the bottle cage) at a gas station before the race.  I've always carry my own bottle on me to start.  It's a good idea, especially if you plan on drinking your own electrolyte mix.

This is my first half, but I've done 3 full Ironmans. I have an aerodrink between the bars and when I hit the first aid station I grab a water and a sports drink. I dump the water in the aerodrink and put the sports drink in my bottle cage. I usually finish both in 1.5-2 hours and grab new ones at the next aid station. If I'm worried about electrolytes I will drop nuun tab in with the water but the Ironman Perform stuff they give out has a bit more sodium than Gatorade so I'm usually okay. I think the best thing is to do what's best for you, and train like you plan to race. If you have something you prefer over the stuff they give out, you probably should us your own, but if you are good with the Ironman Perform sports drink then you should be fine grabbing from the aid stations. Sorry for the exhaustive answer....

Is there a reason why I can't just put filled bottles with my drink of choice at bike drop off?

No reason, you can drop off with your bike or bring them in the morning before the swim if you want them cold. The reason I prefer to leverage the aid stations is that it's one less thing to worry about.

yeah, just bring your own bottles filled with whatever you want on race morn.

A few race area/ day heads up...

1. Deflate your tires before race day when you are in the area.  Then air up race morn or the day before.  Keep them slightly deflated for the race.  Slightly! like if you normally do 120, fill to 110 or 115.  I was there last year and the year before.  Watched 4 tires blow just sitting in the back of a truck when the owners were swimming a few days before the race. Its hot ( maybe some altitude).

2. Chip seal all over the course

3. It will be windy! Just depends how much and when it starts.

4. Its prob going to be hot! If it is hot, combined with the wind it will get really dry.  Half piece of gum and chap stick goes a long way.

Great Tips! Thanks for this.

This is my first 70.3 and I'm starting to get stoked! Training has gone well and I'm happy I'm not stressed about my fitness.

Lucky duck!  I have had a torn calf and now a hip injury.  Total of 3 weeks now with no running.  But I feel okay for the run.  My goals have just kept going out the window.  Now i just want to finish...

I use the Ironman Perform so that is good. I know they will have it there, but what type of mixture, strong/weak, and what will it be in that I can place in my bottle cage?

What will the IM perform be in?  The normal bottles.  They fit in bottle cages no problem.  Is that what you're asking?

Normal Bottles?  I buy mine in a powder in a large tub and mix to specifications.....it comes in bottles?!?!

Then I decided to use the internet since I was already on it.  It does come in bottles..  Does anyone know how this compares to mixing your own?
