Very Excited for this race! This will be my first 70.3! I will be travelling all the way from Houston TX just to have this one as my first Half (originally from MA, but all my family resides in MA).

Any last minute suggestions/ recommendations for a newbie to the half?

mawalt - 2011-05-24 9:27 AM Rencor, "chuck the balance" sounds like littering on the course which would most definitely be a problem so please don't do that if what you are chucking is an old water bottle. Here's how the water bottle exchange stations are set up... At each station there will be small soccer net set up so that you can toss an old water bottle. This frees up one of the water bottle cages on your bike. The net is set up as a way to help keep all the discarded water bottles in a consolidated spot. After discarding your water bottle you'll come upon volunteers that will be distributing either water in Poland Spring sports water bottles or Heed in Hammer Nutrition branded water bottles. The volunteers will be calling out what they have so you know what to grab. You won't have to stop to do this but we don't want you hammering by either (the bottle exchange stations are actually on a small incline to help slow riders down). The volunteers will jog along side of you and hand you the water bottle for you to put in your spare cage and off you go.

Sorry to mislead. I was afraid it might read that way after I hit submit.  When I "chuck the balance" it is very near the aid stations. I'm doing this all very quickly...grab, chug, spray on myself, chuck.
If this isn't doable...I'll live

Heading down this Saturday to do some swimming and a loop of the bike course with some members of my tri team.

Less than a month now until race day!

Just to reiterate on what Nate said, there should be 5-6 of us from NorthEast MultiSport training on the course on Saturday.  We're planning to meet around 8am to swim the course and then will be heading out for a ride.  The distances each of us is riding will vary anywhere from 1 to 3 loops.

If anyone would like to join us, we'll be there.  Smile

I hate to be a wet blanket here, but swimming in Long Pond when there aren't lifeguards on duty is prohibited. I've talked at length with Cathedral Camp about this and it is a liability issue. If you swim from CC and get hurt, CC will be held liable and their insurance won't cover it. Athletes swimming in Long Pond when lifeguards aren't on duty is an ongoing concern of theirs with this event. PLEASE DO NOT SWIM THERE.

Rencor,

Sounds like I need to have a soccer at the front AND back of the water bottle exchange. We can call it a "Rencor Score" if you discard your water bottle and successfully land it in the net....

When we rode the course yesterday there was a small section of the bike course pretty close to the start that was closed due to a gigantic pothole, and only open partially to local traffic. Large cement barriers are in place, but we were able to squeeze by one at a time. Any idea on what will be done on race day?

Kathy,

I think it may have been the short section of Gurney Road between Fall Brook and Mill Pond.

Looking at the map from Garmin Connect, it looks like a 'work around' could be turning right on Country Road and then left onto Washburn Road. This looks like roughly the same distance.

Are we allowed to have people run with us on the course who are not in the race? I am going to need all the motivation I can get.

Fyi, Gurney is not part of the Patriot bike course. We used that the first year, but then the road flooded and it's been under construction ever since.

Nate, I looked at your map on the other thread and I'm wondering if 900(ish) feet elevation was correct for 28 miles. While that's not crazy hills it also doesn't sound super flat. Am I reading too much into that?

My Garmin 705 also pegs the elevation gain around 900 ft per loop. And those are a relatively "easy" 900 ft if you know what I mean - the slight hills are usually preceded by long flattish stretches, so you usually come in to the mild inclines with some momentum... or the inclines are low gradient and/or short, so the required effort is on the low end.

By comparison, the absolute flattest route I've done in eastern MA was 2,100 ft elevation gain over 63 miles. So 1,800 ft over 56 miles is "flat" for this area.

I hope that makes sense!

In the one loop that I did there really wasn't any section where I needed to get out of my seat to climb, or really even go to the bullhorns. I imagine that during the race I'll be in aero 99% or more. The 900 feet over 28 miles equates to around 32 feet of elevation per mile, and you get to come down those slight hills too!

I averaged a little over 20 mph on 181 watts on the ride. I usually need around 200 watts to get to 20 mph, so it's a very fast course.

The only negative part is from miles 21-23 where the road is that crappy new chip-seal type of pavement.

Here's the course info from my ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/88541853

x2.  Definitely have the same perspective as Nate on this.  Yes, there are a few small "climbs" but its really flat.  The disappointing part of the ride is that bumpy section around miles 21-23.

X3I'm a SOLID back-of-the-packer and averaged 16+mph for 2 loops. I don't have a fancy wattage meter; I judge on gears. I think I left the big ring once per loop. Have no fears, don't over think it, it's an awesome course! See you all soon! PS:have we decided on pregame dinner?

No. That is considered outside assistance by USAT and would result in a four minute time penalty the first time it is witnessed, 8 minutes the second time (for a total of 12), and DQ the third time.  Motivation comes from within on this course. Smile  The spectators are pretty much limited to the first and last mile.

I am a paratriathlete doing this as my first 1/2 Ironman tri.  I did a 1/2 Iron Aquabike last year at FIRM MAN.

I did the Minuteman Sprint last year.  It was a GREAT RACE.

I am excited and READY.  See you all there.

Cheers,

This is as flat as you can get for a course in MA!!!! I ride the loops in the area regularly. Its a BEAUTIFUL venue and a fun race!!!! I have to agree that the volunteers at the aid stations on the run are FANTASTIC!!! When I did this race two years ago, the volunteers kept me going each mile.

Who is game for a post packet pick up/ pre race Friday night dinner at the Fireside Grill???? Say 5-5:30????

stick with bike coaching buddy.  That plan is "Rudy's 5K to ER Plan".  It comes with a free bottle of NSAIDs, aircast, new batteries for you TV remote and a quart of whiskey.

Higdons, Galloways, or Yasso's (Runners World)  HM plans are all good.
