Raised in MI, have lived in Wash DC, Denver, Monterey CA, Gilford NH. All have there good and bad points but I'm not leaving my current home of Colorado Springs any time soon.

DanielG - 2011-09-27 11:41 AM Somewhere around Huntsville, AL. Throw a rock and hit TN. Own the side of a hill there. That's my retirement plan

Don't let the secret out of the bag....  We don't like foreigners down here in Alabam' with our southern accents and all.

North Alabama is really nice actually.

Anyway, I'm partial, because I was born and raised in Birmingham, which is a really nice place, especially to raise a family.  Enough outdoor activities to keep you busy, plenty of lakes within driving distance, 5 hours (or less) from pretty much anything (Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Chatanooga, North Carolina, the beach, etc.)  I'm 45 minutes from my alma mater and beloved University of Alabama.  So, I don't have anything to complain about, because it's home.

Now, I would love to live/retire to the mountains of Colorado, so I can ski routinely.

Other places that I believe that I wouldn't mind:

Chicago

New Zealand

Southern California (would have to be just the right place though, close to the coast)

I'm sure I can think of a few more....

Hawaii in the winter; Oregon the rest of the time. (I live in Eugene now but maybe Bend if $ and job were no object--it's a bit sunnier.) And maybe throw in a winter month in Singapore so I can maintain my Chinese, visit friends in Asia, shop, and eat!

Colorado. It has all the outdoors stuff, and it is close to all other outdoors destination (Arizona, California, Utah, etc... still closer to Washington and Oregon). Moving there next year, cross your fingers!
