The tri shorts are nice because they do give you some padding on the bike, without acting like a diaper in the pool.. Pearl Izumi has some decently priced stuff. But don't I remember you said you had a tri suit?

Ok, so I do have a tri suit, but I didn't practice in it, so I didn't want to use it on Saturday. I was actually kinda nervous to wear it...a full spandex outfit! But I gotta get over that someday soon, eh?

Oh yeah, and thanks for teaching me how to use the "quote" button. I've been wondering that!

Yeah my wife is the same way, she just started wearing it to run or to the pool to get used to it.

Going back to my previous note. FOr the tri and using tri shorts. Do you swim, bike and run in the same gear? (of course I would take off my shoes for the swim :-)

Don't worry about how you look in it - the vast majority of people at triathlons are very friendly and supportive, and not from the cast of Baywatch! Smile

The key is that you want something your comfortable in for all three events, and the trisuits are the way to go for that.

You bet!  They're designed for it.  They dry quickly, and have a smaller, thinner pad that is useful for the bike, but doesn't bother you while running.

I like my tri shorts so much (I have a few pairs; one Zoot, one Descente  Aero XT, and my Javelin team Sugoi bottoms) that I wear them during my run and bike workouts to the exclusion of all others.

I have been wearing a pair of Sugoi swim shorts for my pool workouts, mainly because I worry that the chlorine will (over time) erode the elastic on my tri shorts, but I don't have any research to back this up.

You can always throw a t-shirt or bike jersey on over the tri suit if you are uncomfortable once you leave the pool.
(Look at us all using the "Quote" button. Will anyone ever post a new message again! )

Here are a few photos of me. Bike photo is from a charity ride last year. Swim photo is from the race a few weekends ago. Apparently I didn't follow my own advise and I bought a white tri top!

To piggy back this note...... The day before your 1st (or any) is the worst. You will not sleep as good, and will most likely get up pretty early! That is why 2 days before the race (if your race is Saturday- Then Thursday night) it is crucial to get A FULL NIGHTS SLEEP!!!!

Here is what I have lined up for the next month or so:

May 25th - Capital of Texas "First Tri" (400m OWS, 10K bike, 5K run)

June 22 - Pflugerville Tri (500m OWS, 14mi bike, 3mi run)

I am also entered in the Austin Muddy Buddy on May 18th.  Has anyone else done this??

Other than that, there are a few other summer races I would like to do but may wait until the baby is born.

The muddy buddy is one of the coolest races EVER!!!!!

The 1st year they did it, they had it in Seattle (HOME OF BROOKS RUNNING!) and they haven't been back since! It is such a fun race!!!!

Speaking of the taper week...
Should I just be doing limited workouts this week? I ran 40 min yesterday, but for the rest of the week I'm not sure what to do. Maybe a light run/bike and light swim?

Learn to love the taper... However whenever I taper I notice that is when I feel my worst, tired, bored, etc....

It is ok. Your body as just been ready to go go go......

I would say keep your swims around 20 minutes or less, bikes, and runs around 30 minutes or so. Come friday maybe in 1/2 on all the above if anything at all?!

I need to remember to keep my mouth shut when on the bike. The bugs don't taste very good.

I once had a bee fly down the front of my sports bra while riding. That was exciting. Just think what people look like when they get a bee trapped in their car with them, now put that image on a bike!

Bob,

I noticed you have the Annapolis Triathlon for September listed as one of your races. I am doing that race! You will find more race reports and links to other racers doing this one if you look up Annapolis Triathlon, not Annapolis Triathlon 2008. Even though the course is completely different from last year, there are still some good race reports to read. They give you a nice flavor of the race.

Ben, were you going to do this race as well, or was it just the Army 10 miler?

Thanks - I did see the reports from last year and read those, but it seemed like whenever I clicked on the racelink info, it was still giving me last year's date of 9/9/07.  I'll check that again.

That race is actually at risk for me.  As of now, I'm going to a conference in Annapolis that begins that night, so this race fit in incredibly well.  However, I may be changing positions here which would mean I wouldn't be going to Annapolis at all for work.  If that happens, I'm considering doing the Savageman Olympic on 9/21.

I am still struggling in the pool. I thought I wouldn't have too much difficulty as I had done a lot of swimming in the past. I can't seem to get my breathing down right and am running out of steam quite early. In oder to just do a 400m swim I find I am having to do some backfloat regain my breathing. Would additional time in the pool build up my stamina? Perhaps some weight training?
I have purchase a swim DVD and will be getting some help on my stroke at the pool this week as well.

Technique is what helped me the most. I took a weekend class and they video taped me. My body position was horrible, I was dragging my legs the whole time. Once I got a bit better technique things got alot easier.

If it is possible I would recommend finding someone that could give you a lesson or two. You would be suprised how much this will help.

Time in the pool was the key for me.  I did the first 5 weeks of the 0-1650 program, swimming 3x/week, and it really helped me improve both endurance and technique.  Spending that much time in the water really helped me get a feel for what worked for me.

I would have to agree with the others.  Time in the pool will definitely help and so will your technique.  A nice, smooth stroke that is efficient should help and you might be able to pick up some pointers from the video.

I would also agree, and I will throw out a "golf anology" once you find your "swing" or form then work it out. I should be to the point where it feels TOTALLY NATURAL, and not work at all to swim, you are just working when you are speeding up!

Now to contradict this... There is proper form, and everyone has a different body type, so some changes maybe different base on weight, height, etc....

First get the form down, then build stamina, and I think they will all fall together nicely!

I think the plan is to do Annapolis this year (unless life gets in the way), though I still need to register. I just had the shipment show up for my Blue Seventy Helix wetsuit (which I got at such a deal, I think the guy who sold it to me must have "gotten it off a truck", but I didn't ask questions ) so I need another OWS to work it out in (first being Breezy Point on the 1st of June).

The hubby and I are thinking of doing the General Smallwood State Park Tri in Indianhead MD on the 29th of June as an ows practice. 750m swim in the Mattawoman Bay (Potomac River) with a beach start, 16mile bike, and a 5K run.
