Just want to say: This was the most prophetic post I've ever had... On to Vineman... |

Veteran 231 Huntington Beach | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread The full has over 600 ppl signed up already. Last year there was only about 450 total. So much talk about hills, they are out there but not too bad. What everyone should be more concerned about is heat and wind. From about mile 60-80 last year it was like riding into a blow drier on high power. Make it out of that and it's a nice tailwind back to T2. Don't sit on the ground to put on your shoes though once you get there or else you'll burn your butt off and it will really sink in how hot it is. Check out my RR from last yr. Great race and even better people putting it on. Will be back for the 70.3 this yr. |

Veteran 231 Huntington Beach | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Project_A - 2009-05-08 11:24 AM Can anyone compare the Vineman bike course to the Ironman California 70.3? That is the extent of my biking experience. Both have serious wind issues. Cali is much cooler being right next to the ocean and all. I'd say the major hill in Cali is much worst than Chalk Hill at VM. If Cali was 140.6 with 2 loops it would have a bit more climbing than VM. Roads at Cali are in much better shape than VM. At Cali it is impossible to not get atleast a few minutes of drafting in but at VM you might go 5 miles without seeing anyone else. Cali is a really pretty course but I don't think anything beats the VM scenery. If you can handle the Cali bike you can handle VM if you have the endurance. VM has a much tougher run course though. |

Great race and even better people putting it on. Will be back for the 70.3 this yr. On the 70.3 last year, however (only two weeks earlier than the full), the headwind was on the back side of the course. Temps were perfect (actually too cold at the start of the bike...lots of people complained of lost feeling in their toes, even some very seasoned long course types), but miles 29-40, where you have the flattest terrain, had a pissy little breeze in your face to hold your speed down. So it seems that Vineman is a course where conditions can be all over the place, both heat and wind. X2 on the hills on the run course. They're nothing compared to something like Wildflower or Silverman, but this is not a flat course at all. |

Member 7 | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Thanks. I'm working on the endurance part. I did 100 miles this week and last week, and felt great after the first 50. During the second 50, I was busy inventing a time machine in my mind so I could stop them before they invented the ironman. |

Elite 3519 San Jose, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I have made a very tough decision. I will not be doing the Vineman IM this summer. The change of jobs, mechanical issues and more recently, some sort of broncchial sickness, compounded with my lack of enthusiasm for bike riding, all contributed to the fact that I really don't feel ready to ride 112 miles on the bike. Not this year. As hard as this is for me to admit, I know it is the right decision. I am really bummed and very angry at myself for lettting the new schedule and job screw me up. But at this point in time, I think it is the right decision. Going to go cry and punch somethings now. |

Extreme Veteran 573 Sherman Oaks, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread aww runningwoof, don't be so hard on yourself. life gets in the way sometimes of our IM goals. I'm training for vineman this year and it's the first time, really, that life has given me the time to do it. Vineman and other IM races will always be there. when you are ready, you will tackle this and succeed w flying colors. better that you made this decision now, rather than try to push thru the anguish of biking (I can SO relate there, i really hate it but try to embrace it...) and force yourself to train when your body is trying to heal from an illness. i know it is easy for me to say all of these things to you but take it in stride, wallow in your unhappiness today and look towards next year. don't be so hard on yourself - happens. with a new job it's difficult to find time to train for anything let alone an IM. so just enjoy the down time now! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Take care of yourself. IM is nothing to take casually. If you have health issues and such, it is best to wait for next year or whatever. The training you did this year will give you a great base for next year. With Triathlon training being a lifestyle, the bumps occur, but are only part of the long term healthy lifestyle. This really sucks for you, but we are here and not going anywyere. So hang in there. Our hearts are with you. |

So, so tempted to post the link to the other--larger--event that happens every year in Guerneville the same weekend as the full Vineman...but I just can't bring myself to in the context of a question about activities for a 3 year old. Let's just say that if you're interested in staying anywhere near the swim start/T1, your inclination to get lodgings squared away early isn't a bad idea. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Alrighty, Boise 70.3 done with a decent PR by 1 hour over my First HIM for a time of 5:43, with whitecaps on the swim and rain throughout the bike and run with really nasty puddles. 1 week to recover and then back up to speed for the last stint of long workouts prior to Vienman. Who else raced recently? |

Who else raced recently? Um, not a race, but did my first organized century 8 days ago. Before that was LA Marathon on Memorial Day (PR of 3:42). Only one more race for me before Vineman: Breath of Life Oly in Ventura on 6/28. Nice PR on your HIM, btw. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread 5:25 is rocking for that HIM. I really need to learn to swim faster one of these days. Hopefully this winter I can hit the water and bring up my swim speeds. Ya, still some long workouts ahead. I still have some long rides and runs to nail. I will be surviving the swim, but I won't be passing any of you guys in the process 8). Do make them keep 1 cold beer for me at the finish line, oh wait wine a glass of wine at the finish line or 2. Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Doh, sorry about the leg, hope you can maintain that solid base without injury. Not nearly time for me to taper. I need to get a few more 100 mile rides in and still building on the long runs. Last one was only 17 miles. Swimming, well swimming is just swimming I will make it in the time cut off, but I won't be improving the swim any between now and then, just maintaining (4200 yards with drills today). |
