Happy New Year Everyone.   Yes, it is time to get back on track with the training.  I was able to run a couple of days this week.

k read23 - My swimming class agrees with being out of gas after 50m.  We were all shocked that we could run for an hour but not be able to swim for more than 5 minutes.  We found that by relaxing and not worrying about the time it took helped.  Most of us can swim for about 20-30 minutes now without stopping.  We have been in class for 6 weeks.

on the swimming front,

i too breath every 2-3 strokes when warming up or going slow, but as soon as things pick up it is down to every stroke, and always every stroke during races.

looking down makes things faster/easier because it pushes you chest into the water (this brings your legs up, making a straight line from head to toes).

on training times, i go solely by time in both running and biking. the resons for this are there are a TON of things that can effect distance, hills, wind, weather, how you feel, etc.
an example of this would be, i do a two hour hard ride somewhere hilly and ave 15 MPH, or i do a two hour hard ride on the flats, and ave 22. the flat ride i go MUCH further, but both are the same workout.

swimming i go by distance (much easier to avoid outside influences on a set distance, same with running on a track).

Happy New Year Everyone.

This week I have seen very big improvements in the swimming front.  I am seeing more consistant times throughout the wourkout, which for me is big since I would normally drop in speed after the first few laps.  Also, I think I have found a swim coach to help with technique.

I have been told about a swim lab in Colorado Springs that will video tap you swimming for 30 mins with underwater cameras.  The cost is $100, would this be worth the cost to be analyzed?  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

i'll get into swim training in the next post (need ot run out in a min), but for the other swim questions:

You should be looking down, it pushes your chest into the water and keeps your legs higher (more of a flat line from head to toe). this is MUCH faster and easier.

I breath every two strokes when i am going easy, but once things get harder i move to every stroke. water some really fast swimmers, they will do this as well, not as much in shorter races but as the distances go up they breath more often.

for running and cycling i go by time and not distance. there are so many things that can effect the distance you run if you go by that, and even more in cycling. wind, heat, cold, road surface, hills, how you feel, the list goes on.

my run workouts (with a few exceptions) are time based, most are simply get in a certain amount of time, and a few looks like 30 min easy, 20 min tempo, 20 min easy, etc.

cycling is 100% time based.

swimming is the only one that most people do and should do by distance.

Nice to hear John.  You'll be swimming before me!  I should be more thankful about how my health is.  If serious ailmentns or injuries aside, David frequently warns me about injuries and I never get any and never get too sore. (Knock on wood).  Have fun with the resumed training.

Yeah good news, glad to hear it, I hope your training goes really well...

....so what's with these bike shops and their bankers' hours?! Is it all of them or just the one's around me? I know the holidays have only just passed, but geez, you would think weekends would be a good time for business.... ya know, most people have work, school, etc M-F 8-5 ...just ranting. Went swimming the other morning it felt pretty good I think I am making good progress I feel like I am moving faster without expending any more effort really and continuous sessions no longer totally kill me.... gonna start counting laps now lol

sorry i have been out of contactfor the past few days, got home from FL to find phone and internet out, just got it back today!

yeah bike shop hours drive me nuts.

they close so early its sick.

nice job on the swimming. it will come, just takes some time and work.

unlike with running or cycling, it has the added hurdle of needing to get faster and swim better, vs simple getting fitter.

as you get more comfortable in the water this will come much more quickly.

Welcome Home David!

I offically started my training for the TTT yesterday. And me being me missed my first swim so I will get it tomorrow. But I did get my P90 stuff and my run in. It felt good to run again. I didn't run fast but I did run. BTW...are you still thinking about doing the TTT?? I know I'm evil for even suggesting it. You know misery loves company.

Have a great one I am off to ride my bike.

haha yes i am considering it! both my girlfriend and myself did/do race for HFP, so we got a team entry in when it opened, so the option to race is there. she is much more long course geared than i am, but if we do race that should match us up well, andw e have a decent shot at the coed team overall. now i just have to convince her to come back from boulder for that "fun"

on another note my winter training kicked off seriously sunday, and its time to start seeing the milage go up and some real workouts start. i'm excited to be out just maintaining fitness and to start getting in some serious training:-)

hope everyone out there is doing well.

David, most of the USAT rankings seem to be in now.  Although I was disappointed at every single event this year I am happy overall with the year.  It seems interesting to note though that the USAT has the Duathlon rankings roughly 4-5 points higher than the Triathlon.  So my 82 would be more comparable to guys doing a 77-78 in triathlons.

Still happy with my first year.  Now I need to get motivated to improve that this year.

Hey,

How often do you guys do two or more tri sports back to back for training? ...like do 30 min of laps then dry off and go run? ...just curious

i do all my lifting and swimming together, and often run while i am there as well (just easier to get it in that way).

over the summer and when its warmer i try to spread them out more, mainly due to higher volume and trying to maxamize recovery when training two-three times a day.

when i have lower volumes (12 hours per week or less), i have no issue doing all workouts back to back, once i start getting higher, in the 12-25 hours per week range, i start to try and spread them out more.

i dont do actuall brick workouts (back to back with the goal of doing them like that, like in a race) very often, as they are not wildly helpful and end up beating me up more than they are worth.

thomas, nice job on the rankings, you had a pretty solid season this past year, and looks like '09 will only be better.

for those of you that have or are looking for some weight loss to acompany your training, lets have a weightloss challenge (the holidays were not kind to me, well they were, but not in a good for triathlon sort ofway:-)

if you dont feel like throwing weights out there for all to see, simply show how much you are looking to drop, and then where you end up.

this is not meant in any way to compare yourself to others, but simply a way for each of us to challange outselves.

lets have this run till the end of the month, with check-ins every friday.
this can be as much or as little as you want, but lets keep it reasonable. i dont want to see anyone being unhealthy and looking to lose 10 pounds per week (ok that is stretching it pretty far).

lets keep it fun, healthy, and see if we can all hit out goals and keep healthy.

right now i am at 164, looking to be 158 by the end of the month.

Good morning yall',

Ok I'll be in on the weight challenge. I need to drop that elusive last 10 lbs. I did not gain any over the holidays, actually lost 2lbs. I am still over what I wish to be and after dropping over 94lbs in the last 4 yrs, I have been trying to get rid of this last 10 for what seems like forever. I don't mind putting my weight number out there. My current weight as of this morning is 168 lbs. My goal is 158lbs. Much luck to everyone.

Sounds like an interesting little challenge.  I put on about six pounds over the holidays.  I'm hoping I can lose that, although I will be on vacation for about 10 days this month so workouts will be a little scarce.  Should make things interesting though

My starting weight as of Monday was 173.  Goal is 167 by month's end

Considering I have food poisoning right now, and can't eat anything except a few sips of chicken broth, I may have this challenge won.

I hate not being able to get my training in due to illness, but I'm hoping it will soon pass.

I'm up for the weightloss challenge. At 6ft 155, I don't really need to lose any weight, but I think a drop of 5 pounds could make me feel a little lighter on the swim and run. That's my goal.

 Good luck to everyone.

I just started a challenge today at work, so I might as well double up.  Currently 136.5 with 21.5% body fat.  I'm 5'3".   I maintained over the holidays and have actually dropped abouts 11 pounds since August.   My goal will be 127.  I haven't weighed that in about 17 years.  I'm going to need alot of help to get there.  Lock up the chocolate.

John - Nice to hear the good news on the all clear.

Correction on the goal.  My end of the month goal would be 132.   The 127 is an 8 week goal.
