momo, are you saying we include wu/cd in total swimming yards on our log?

Also, where should we input our h20 daily consumption?

yes include your warm up(wu) and cool downs (cd)... that's the only way i know you are doing them...

you should be taking in about 3 liters of water a day.. sounds like a lot but its not. when training you need to drink more.. anything under an hour.. 12-24oz is ok... but when you train longer than an hour its 32oz+..

RULE OF THUMB Before a long anticipated long(more than an hour) workout.
weight yourself, naked(yes naked).. after your long workout
weight yourself again(naked)... this will give how much water you
require for replenishment. The weight difference is the amount of
water burned during the workout..

I have created a spreadsheet that helps with the conversions of hydration requirements after working out..

if you want it.. email me your email addresses.. and i'll sent it to you.. i will type an explanation of what this does.. very useful

let me know

I'm definitely interested in the challenge -- I've been doing OK with running, but need some motivation for biking and swimming.

Good morning All,
Hope training is going well... we are 4 days in to a new year.. i hope you are planning workouts to meet the challenge and also scheduling a day in there to help recover..

This thread is about shoes.. I was out running this morning.. and i could myself running.. what's does that mean you ask.. i could hear the impact of my foot on the pavement.. This is a sign to me that i need new shoes.. Reviewing my logs. i have 148.50 miles on these running shoes.

So the question of the day, how many miles are on your shoes..?? and is it time for a new pair..

Dead shoes can cause many problems... leg pains, lower back, and shin splints, calf pains as well..

Shoe life depends on many things... how often do you wear them, frequency of running, and your size... I'm a big guy... 240, muscular guy.. heavy.. so i can get between 150 and maybe 200 miles on a pair of shoes.. i only wear my run shoes to run in.. i don't wear any other time.

Another question how often do you wear your run shoes?

This is a thought from me to you on injury prevention.. Your feet are is probably the most use part of the body.. you want to take care of them..

I fall in the clydesdal division as well and don't get more than 200 miles or so. The logs on this site are great for tracking the mileage on my shoes, but when in doubt I always go and try on a new pair. I am always amazed how worn in my old shoes feel when I slip on a new pair.

I actually just replaced my shoes -- for me, its when I start feeling anything in my knees, I switch. And I am suddenly shocked at how much better everything feels with the new ones.

Okay, I learned something important about cycling this weekend, so I thought I would share with the group just in case everybody doesn't know this.

Smallest ring and smallest cog is a no go.

Largest ring and largest cog is a no go.

You'll  probably bend the teeth  on the cog and/or bend a link in the chain with the wear and tear on a setup that is out of allignment.

hopefully not on the awol list...I don't have a computer at home and log in at  the office...I guess I'm an intermediated swimmer at this point...definitely will do the swim/bike/run challenge goals....I have new shoes but am betting i run on my heels since they were sore after my 6 mile run-will have to focus on that...also need to get a basic bike(used) to get outside and off the stationary

I bought the pair of running shoes, which I have just retired, almost exactly one year ago. I wore my old pair for everything; running, strength-training, going to and from the gym. As I wasn’t actively tracking my shoes, so I decided that I would use the 1 year mark and new orthotics, as an incentive for replacing them. My new shoes are going to be for running only but I could still be wearing them 5 days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. I will continue to use my old shoes to get myself to the gym, etc. I think as I start keeping track of my shoes, I will have a better indicator when I need to replace them. I am hoping for 300 – 400 miles but this might be overly optimistic.

I am actually trying to figure out where to get fitted for a good pair of running shoes. The ones i have are not worn out but the arch of my foot starts to hurt after just a short time jogging. I am unsure of exactly what to get.

you should go to a running store.. There are three types of running shoe.. stability, neutral, and high arch..

Here's an article from runner world explaining pronation:http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-319-327-7727-0,00.html

So stabilty shoes are for those heels that rotate inward.. normally people with flat feet will wear a stability shoe

Neutral shoes are for those that have an arch, and the heel rotates very little while running

High arch.. this is for people with a high arch in the foot. there ankle tends to rotate outwards.

Hopefully your Local running store can give you a better explanation than i just did..

Heel striking is common.. you have to make sure you shoes account for that.. i wear sacouny triumph 5, there have extra padding for the heel..

These are all things that a good running store would tell you about when buying shoes.. hope this helps out with shoes and shoe buying.. any more questions let me know

it depends on your bike set up.. teeth ratio.. my rear cog is a 9spd cog.. my small ring has full range of my rear cassette.. my big ring only can use 8 of the 9spd cassette..

how many rings do you have on your crank? i only have 2.

2 rings.

I didn't realize the mechanical advantage on the gears actually overlap depending on the ring and cog selected.

Its pretty crazy... the teeth ratio between you crank and rear cassette.. its pretty important when it comes to speed and endurance riding. I have a tri bike, so the ratio is different than than that of a road bike.. some road bike have a granny gear(third ring on a three ring crank.).. that ring is never used...

All,
Vitamins and supplements... it's always good to take a multi-vitamins... (so many types).. i take a mult pack from GNC called sport man.. and also a bee complex(bee pollen).. i'm no nutritionist so its kinda hard to recommend things.. because our requirements and absorptions rates are different.. i can't really say anything other than multi-vitamins.. other than that, it would be good to consult a nutritionist..

Hey All,
We are now 6 days into the New Year.. How are things going? What does yours season look like? triathlons, running events? I ask this because races planning is important.. it dictates your training.. normally your race season is planned at the end of the previous(at least you have an idea).. something to think about..

My Season looks like this:
Shamrock Half Mar 22
Smithfield Sprint Tri Apr 4
Breezy Point Tri May 31
Patriot Half Sept ?
Sandman tri Sept
OBX Half Nov
Turkey trot Thanksgiving morning.

This is all tentative because i travel for work.. months at a time.. but its my plan for the season. I hope to do at least half of the races you see before you.

Here is my tentative 2009 plan;

Robbie Burns 8K - January
Frosty 5K - Febraury
Around the Bay 5K - March
TD Canada Trust 10K - April
Sulphur Springs Trail 10K - May
Guelph Lake Sprint Triathlon - June
Niagara or Orillia Sprint Triathlon - August
Burlington Waterfront 5K or Scotiabank Waterfront 5K - September
Trek or Treat Trail 10K - October

I started running again in September of 2008 and it was a personal (and motivational) goal of mine to do at least one race per month. I am hoping to continue my streak in 2009 with my tris interspersed. I realise that my 2009 plan is a little sparse on triathlons and I am still looking around for at least one more triathlon to do in 2009.

Maurice, I have heard some triathletes talking about 'A' and 'B' races, do you know what this means?

Kristin,
"A" races are normally must do races.. personal races.. "B" races are either training races for the "A" race, or not my first race choice.

It's good see that everyone has a plan. I guess I have to put out a thread about progression..
progression is adding distance(running, biking) while being staying injury free.. Some of you have some distance events.. coming up ..

Kristin, I have an 8K training plan if you want it.. it may be too late now, but you could probably do the last two weeks of it.. you didn't supply a date for your january race.. you want to start tapering your workout may a week before the race..

Tapering is cutting back on the intensity and running before the race.. we'll talk more about it..

Right now, I don't have a lot planned. I think it looks like:

Want to find a 5K in March

April 11: Scotland Run 10K
May 3: 5 Boro Bike Tour in NY (42 miles)
July 29th: NYC Triathlon (Olympic)

I'm still trying to find sprint triathlon to fit in there at some point, and maybe fill out my schedule a little more.
