Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's Newest Manatees - FULL ranchrunner - 2009-04-09 10:41 AM A few questions: I am assuming from looking at the archives that we just keep posting under the same thread the entire 3 months of the mentor group...yes? If so, is there somwhere you can mark the thread as "read" so you know where to begin reading on a new day? I have looked around but haven't found anything. What are your suggestions for core fitness/strength training? I already alluded to this in my bio, but what are your thoughts on a bike? I don't have anything right now and need to get to riding. Thanks, Sharie Unfortunately there's no "read" function ... for a while, I'll be posting an index every 5-10 pages so that we can easily find topics we covered and don't have to scroll through every page to look something back up. Here's my thoughts on a bike. Like Beth said, go to a good local bike store. Get them on the phone and ask how they would size you for a ne bike. They should be able to do a bike sizing for you--that means, they should at minimum be taking several measurements of your body and ask what you want the bike for before recommending a bike size (this should be free). Feel free to test-ride several different bikes at the store--remember, curly handlebars (drop bars) not straight bars--just to get a feel for different bikes, models and maybe even different sizes. Make sure to write down your measurements. Based on that, you can start looking for a good used bike. Check back in with us when that's all done! If you can't find a good local bike store or it's too far or something, check back in--I have some other advice for you then. Good luck! |

I am in the same boat on the bike thing....I don't have one and have been looking at craigslist locally for one...not much luck so far. What kind of dogs do you have? Had to ask cuz I have 7 right now.....6 Aussies and an Italian Greyhound....We do the dog show thing....that's my other expensive time consuming hobby...lol So I must say I am a little in awe of all of you.....I am just praying I can manage to get to the point where I can actually feel confident I will finish my planned sprint in August. Carole DAWGGIES!!! Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm also a dog trainer and care professional . I used to show Dobermanns back in Indonesia. It was a blast! I used to teach agility and am slowly getting my current dog, a rescue boxer named Yodi, into it. Carole, you have plenty of time to train, and you will be wonderful to finish your sprint when the time comes. Remember, it's all about HAVING FUN! Remember being a kid and just splashing around and pedaling on bikes and running around? Tri is just the grown up version of that |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's Newest Manatees - FULL LaurenCO - 2009-04-09 1:55 PM I too have a bike question. I have a hand me down WalMart bike and I don't have any plans to replace it before my tri in August. It is women's mountain bike. My questions are: 1) I am curious if its a good fit for me. I can almost (but not quite) touch my toes to the ground when I'm sitting on the bike. I feel okay when I ride it, no knee pains or anything. I'm 5'2" with shortish legs. 2)It has big tread tires on it. Right now I bike 100% on trails, dirt and gravel so I don't want to change them anytime soon. But my triathlon is on a road, would I benefit from switching the tires for thinner, smooth treaded ones? (Sorry, I know zero bike jargon). Thanks!! Lauren Lauren, everything I said to Carole about her sprint goes for you, too! And feel free to post what specifically about the swim you're struggling with--Beth is a chlorine goddess Mountain bikes actually have a lower seat profile than road bikes, meaning that you should definitely be able to touch at least your toes if not your feet to the ground. Is there a way you can lower the seat some more? The mountain biking will be great for your legs and make it much easier to transition to a road bike when the time comes. As your tri approaches, yes, you will probably want to swap the tires out for smoothies, but it's not a necessity (but it's not that expensive, either--maybe $60-$80 plus labor). Does your triathlon have a mountain bike division? Some do! Check! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's Newest Manatees - FULL If it makes any of you feel better, I did all my tris up through my HIM on an ancient 6-speed WAY TOO BIG steel bike with cruiser bars that had me in an upright position. I don't recommend this (particularly in the wind!) but it just goes to show you really don't have to go very fancy with bikes. |

Master 3479 Utah | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's Newest Manatees - FULL Lauren- I was lucky enough to come across a great bike sale and somehow managed to pick a bike that fits me well without even seeing it first (not something i would recommend unless you have someone who knows you and knows what they're doing helping you out first). However, my hubby has gone on a few rides with me and a few tri friends, on his mountain bike. After the first ride he went straight to the store and bought slicks (the smooth tires) for his bike. He is not a wimp by any means, but he just could not keep up with us on the road. And I am not a very fast rider. I think we averaged about 14 mph on that ride... So my advice would be to go with the slicks, but you might want to try out the road on your knobby tires first. Anybody else have any advice here? |

Would it help at all to change the subject line to the particular thing we are asking about? Just a thought. I changed my view to "threaded" earlier today but that is impossible to know where you are with all the same subject headings! YIKES! I changed back to "flat". I have called all the LBS (Scottsbluff 70miles, Cheyenne 90miles and Fort Collins 120miles) and asked questions. One store sells Specialized, one sells mostly Trek and said they would have nothing in stock for my size, 5'5.5" and then one store in FTC didn't say. All pricing seemed to start at about $850 - except for a "Vita" with straight handles which you said I don't want. I guess I will start looking at Target, WalMart and Goodwill. I found some sites online yesterday that gave pretty comprehensive info about how to measure yourself for a bike. I do hope to get to Scottsbluff tomorrow for some other shopping so will plan on stopping in to see if they can size me. On swimming: I need to get started. I plan to stop at the YMCA pool in Scottsbluff tomorrow during the lap swim. Any thoughts for early training? |

Expert 764 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's Newest Manatees - FULL Bikes- Last year I trained for, and did my first (and only) Tri on a Jamis Coda. Which is a flat bar, 26 lb bike. This year, I picked up a 1989 Panasonic sport for $35. It's a steel bike, so I think it's going to be heavy, but it has better gearing than the Coda, and has the drop bars. It's not my final bike, but it gives me another option for training and racing I'd say, keep checking Craig's list for a good deal. |

STRETCH OUT your arm in front of you on the recovery so you glide as far as possible. ELBOWS HIGH underwater so that you're making a 90-degree angle out away from your body and with your forearm. Do you visit the Bin Tri'n site or message board? 2 rides coming up this weekend. The Friday one I am busy but am hoping to do the Monday I might try to get out on Saturday as well No I haven't been on Bin Tri-n since I "quit" tri's early last year ... Technically I'm a member of the Island Triathlon Club ... I paid money to join - but don't make a lot of their workouts because they are all CRAZZZYYY fast and way more advanced than I am. I am doing their spins on Mon/Wed nights .. but that's about it at this point. I feel intimidated by their fastness. |

That said, here's awesome footage of what the underwater (the most important!) part of the stroke looks like ... don't pay too much attention to the instructions; it's a lot to swallow. It will be interesting to get in the pool again and pay attention to what I do/how I swim. I am sure there have been some improvements in style since I was a swimmer way back in high school! I read somewhere today that I should be able to swim 20min straight before beginning training for a Tri. Yikes! Not sure I can do that. |

A second language is always a valuable addition to your skill set ... this just happens to be an ancient language more obscure than Aramaic ... yet very helpful in day-to-day activities such as knocking out 1000m at at Crystal Pool. |
