Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() losta - 2009-08-17 5:18 PM Cadence is how many revolutions per minute your pedals do. My average cadence is between 65-90. 65 on hills, 90 on fairly flat or slight downhill. I have a Garmin 705 which is a great bike computer it has a big color screen and shows any number of things, cadence, speed, heart rate, time, distance. I can set it up with 4-6 sections. It also has maps and navigation. The Garmin 305 is a nice little wrist unit. I am about to put mine up for sale if anyone is interested. It is only about 3-4 months old. I replaced it with the 310XT. I haven't been uploading all my workouts to BT but I do save them on my computer. It is just too much data and I prefer it to be more private. I listened to a podcast of a top female triathlete not long ago and she said she mostly keeps a cadence of 65 she must be pushing big gears but I thought that was quite interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. What is the difference between the Garmin 705 and a 305 with a cadence sensor? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 305 as well as 310 XT are large watch size that have monochrome screens. 705 looks like a mini GPS unit like you would have in your car it's color and has a variety of screen modes. It is really a bike computer but I have used it running, I just put it in my pocket. The 305 and 310 have multisport modes where you can track your entire triathlon including transitions. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello everyone! I enjoyed catching up on the thread this evening. Big ride on Saturday that kicked my rear. 38.5 with hills. i was the only girl riding with 6 guys. I must of been working extra hard b/c I was exhausted. Took yesterday off and ran 4 miles today. This is going to be a hard training week for me. I'm heading to my HS reunion back in Ohio. Plus, worked has picked up this weel. I will have to work hard to get some training in. (I may be out of touch for sometime while I'm traveling) Thirdsacharm - Welcome! Introduce yourself and let us know what your training for. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well no weight loss this week - which is expected as I had some stress relieving ice cream over the weekend, coupled with some overeating. At least I didn't gain any... Longish ride yesterday, swim today, run maybe later, getting psyched up for my last sprint of the season on sunday - which is nice and hilly. It's my "fun" race, so I won't be going all out. Oh yah, and I'm another garmin 305 w/ cadence user on the tri bike, w/ normal generic cyclocomputers on the rest of my bikes. That's really the only gadgety gadget I use. If I had the dough I would get a power tap, but that's not in the cards for a while. Hope everyone's training is going well. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ~ AZ Sunshine ~ - 2009-08-18 2:16 AM HThis is going to be a hard training week for me. I'm heading to my HS reunion back in Ohio. IdealMuse - Take care of that foot! You can't hurt yourself before you big race this weekend. AZ - Thanks I did an hour run the other night and it wasn't acting up so it looks like it was just a temporary thing. I was born in OH, but I haven't lived there since I was 5 years old! Sounds like you had a good ride though and held your own w/ the guys. On the plate for today is a OWS with my Tri training group. I walk to the Train (El) so that's 2 miles each way plus another half mile to the beach once I get off the el (yes, Chicago has beaches!) and I assume we'll probably do .5 or 1 mile swim. Even though my weight hasn't been down much the last 2 weeks I took some measurements and I have lost inches most places, so I'm still seeing progress. Even some off my arms which is good because I carry much too much weight there and it makes me look heavier then I am sometimes. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I usually go to Weight Watchers on Wednesday and use that for my official weight. However, I won't be able to go tomorrow and will have to see about getting there on Thursday. As a group we seem to have had a nice variety of workouts today, from ows to pool swimming to walking to running to biking. We pretty much have it all covered. I swam this morning and then rode my bike from the pool to work and then (of course) back again tonight. The distance is a little shorter than when I bike commute from home. The route from home is a little bit more "bike-friendly," but I am trying to be better about riding my bike to work just so I can get in more miles with limited time. I can't wait for my cadence sensor to get here. I don't even want to know what a power tap is. Have a good day tomorrow everyone! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did a speed ride today to see if my time is improving. Looks like it slowly is. My goal is to do a long swim tomorrow. keep up the good work everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did a 30 mile ride today. My longest this year. I also did a short swim and water aerobics. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I didn't make it to the pool this morning. That has been a problem lately - getting to the pool on Thursday mornings. I am just so dead and achy by then. I figure I need the rest so I take it, but that only leaves me one day a week to swim. It is really hard to accept that I simply can't do everything I want to do - not at 53 anyway. Now I have to figure out what to do to get my peach today. Have a good day everyone. Off to work. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got off the couch and began my journey to doing tris and losing weight on 4/14/09 I didn't weigh myself for about a month after I started and I think I must have lost at least 4 or 5 lbs that first month. I don't enjoy getting on the scale but lately my clothes have been getting much baggier and I already moved down two sizes. Today I weighed myself and I've lost at least 30 lbs, that leaves 70 to my goal but I'm on my way. Now help me find a HIM for late next summer as what worries me is getting through winter and keeping the training going. Edited by losta 2009-08-20 7:32 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am still very unenergetic. I did go on a walk last night for my peach (which I haven't uploaded yet), but I missed Crossfit this morning and will have to improvise tonight. On the other hand, a new combo of drugs (Benadryl and Sleepinal - both OTC) did allow me to sleep last night and I figure with one more night of sleep, I will have my energy back. I am doing a bike handling clinic tomorrow morning and there will be a ride along Pacific Coast Highway after and I am really looking forward to that. What does everyone else have on schedule? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Where is everyone? I did a bike handling clinic this morning and learned about making a circle with my foot (in other words, better stroke mechanics), how to corner (keep your inside leg up), and to keep my cadence at 90 RPM (can't wait for my cadence sensor to get here). I also learned that 90 RPM is also the optimal running cadence. Then I went on a lovely 22 miles bike ride along Pacific Coast Highway, just about the most beautiful place on earth. It was hilly, but not as hilly as The Hill. Tomorrow is a running day and I will practice running at 90 RPM. Don't know how that will work as I have never tried such a tecnique. We will see. Have a good day everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Around just keeping busy. The bike Clinic sounded useful L. Are you glad you took it? I need to work on spinning more in a circle as well I tend to put most of my power on the front half of the circle. Legs in back just aren't as strong. When I tried doing one leg drills one day it just about killed my hamstrings. Yesterday was a day off and today I was supposed to do a swim/bike/run with my tri group. I wasn't able to get there so my husband drove me down to the lake to swim today. It was BITTERLY cold. High 50s tops. I normally do the 1 mile swim but when I got to the 1/4 mile marker I had to turn around between the cold and the swells it was an awful swim. Since my group also biked/ran brick today I'll go out and do some of that as soon as I finish warming my body up. losta - Looking for a race might be easier if you post in the NY forum... They will know whats within driving distance and the skill level you're looking for. I've heard of some halfs in your area but I don't know what kinda course they are. Over here in the mid-west I've been recommended Racine and Steelhead but they are both fairly mid summer. I've been looking at the NO 70.3 which is earlier... (April I think?) which might be an option. For me it's all going to depend on if I go crazy and sign up for IMoo or IMaz... I won't sign up for any 70.3s until I'm sure Im not doing those next year. Ideally I should be aiming for the 70.3s and not the fulls but... I guess I'm extra nutso. Anyway I'd ask in the NY group or post in the general forum.. give them your timeframe and type of race your looking for. CONGRATS on the 30lbs that's awesome!! Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I travel often and so many states are close CT, NJ, PA, MA, VT, RI etc and I don't mind traveling a bit further either so NY forum may be limiting. I'll find one. I sort of have a few in mind to choose from and it really depends on how my knee does with my new gel. I just don't want to pick a real hilly 70.3. The Timberman in NH is tomorrow. I will look at reports for that. I was reading one of your posts in the IM forum. Some of the replies were harsh but I think having a HIM in your pocket before an IM would be the best idea. High 50's air temp in Chicago? Brrr does that mean we've got a cold front heading to NY? It's been so hot & humid lately (or else it's raining). Did you get to finish your workout? Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm leaving later this morning for (another!) week of family vacation, so I'll post my weigh-in today, and will weigh in again when we get back. Weight this morning was 149, which was my goal for this month (yay! sub-Athena weight -- there goes my chance of EVER winning any hardware!!!). We'll see if I can stay there over the next week.... Had to double-check and make sure I was on the right thread. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today I attempted a six mile run. That's a little far to go on non-running, which is what I have been doing lately. Note to self: if you want to be able to run any distance, you must get out there and actually run. I got in the distance, but there was a whole lot more walking than I was expecting. |

No HIM planned any time soon (maybe we will do one outside Iceland next year) but my last TRI of the season will be in 2 weeks. Great job on the 6 miles. But don't overdo it with distance if you haven't been running much lately because that could get you injured, and thats no fun |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello everyone! Sorry for being MIA. I've been gone since Thursday. Not a good training week for me. I was at my 20 year reunion and my hometown Bratwurst festival. I'm scared to get on the scale after my weekend of brats and funnelcakes. I did complete the "brattie run" on Saturday. 5 miles! Five miles is my longest run of this training season. Besides that it was pretty rough week. I plan on swimming tomorrow. Edited by ~ AZ Sunshine ~ 2009-08-23 11:20 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, I'm locking down the last of the gear today and about to head out for 2 weeks. Happy training everyone - stay peach! See you round the 9th or 10th. And then run-focused HIM training will begin in earnest for me. Hurray! p.s. i was down 4 pounds this week - which was probably really only -2 as last week when I weighed I think i was having a bloaty spike. Pretty sure I'll be dropping some weight over vacation... Have fun out there! Kiri |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got back from a 3 mile run. I had to force myself to run tonight but I'm glad i got it in. I'm a month out from my sprint in September. I need to get moving if I don't want to embarrass myself. Unfortunately, it is a very busy time at work so I need to get up in the morning or skip lunch to make it work. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everybody! How's everyone's August closing out? Is anyone signing up for any challenges next month? I got an hour each swim and bike in today. I have my 2 sprint tris next month and I am starting to think about how to train once I don't have a goal directly in front me. I plan to work on my running through the fall/winter as that is my weakest now. I have been looking around at race reports for HIMs for this time or later next year. I know at this point I could do the swim and bike of an HIM at my current fitness level (albeit slowly) but not the run. I also don't want to sign up for one with monster hills or strong chance of high humidity. |
