x10000 on watching out for the oyster beds. I decided to warm up last year without going off the dock. Big mistake! I stepped on an oyster and cut my foot. I decided I should go back to the shore at this point, but on my trip back in I stepped on another which caused me to fall and cut open my hand. There are some pictures of my bloody bike from my race report last year. The med staff was top notch and got me all cleaned up. I cut it during the sprint warm up on Saturday and had no problems when I raced the Oly on Sunday.

Keith,

How about closing that area this year?

Finally starting to get some outside riding weather out here in RVA...thank you for the post on the oyster beds.  Busy training weeks the next couple of weeks....hope everyone's training is going well.  It will be here before you know it.  Anyone know when they put the buoys out for the swim?  I'd like to practice once in open water when I get to TX.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-07 1:04 PM I'm new to this forum and planning on doing the HIM.  I've read a few of the old race reports, but can anyone give me some perspective on swimming in a bayou?  I am a fresh water inland lake girl myself and trying to get a handle on what is usually the most stressful part of a tri for me.....a Texas forum member (won't mention his name, but you know who you are) is filling my head with stories of alligators, sewer rats, jelly fish, etc....

yeah Brittany is right.  i think you'll be probably be ok.

What about the big fish that bite? I've heard if your under 5 foot with a funky new hair do, the fish will be attracted to you?

Hi all,

Just booked my place and flights (coming from the UK), very excited as this is my first tri. Im staying for a week and was wondering is there is anything specific worth doing around the houston/galveston area. Also has anyone who has been or is from the area know of any cheap hotels/hostels or holiday apartments for rent?
many thanks

Check out VRBO.com.  I am staying at Moody Gardens, but I initially started looking into a condo.  There are a number of them very close to the race start at reasonable prices.

Hey Trev, fish don't go after people under 5 feet tall....not enough good eatin'!  Think they like Canadians better.

My husband is doing the Sprint Saturday.

Are we going to have a BT get together maybe Saturday for lunch? I'm coming from MA I want to meet as many of you doing the race as possible.

My husband is doing the Olympic Saturday. I'd love to go to a BT lunch afterwards though!

I've finally been on the bike the past 2 weekends. The winds have been brutal and beating me up, but I keep telling myself it's good training - both physically and mentally. It is rough though, I'm going to have to be careful not to blow myself up for the run.

When are you arriving? I think I'm going down Thursday night so that I can swim on Friday.

We are flying into Houston on Friday I think arriving early afternoon. I'd love to swim both Friday and Saturday to get a bit of ows practice in and get my swim demons slayed a bit.

I think the Coast guard offered an OWS practice last year on Friday.

Anyone else wishing they were doing the Oly instead of the half? Why did I sign up for a half in April again?

Me too..I've done April Olys before. It seemed like a good idea when I signed up.

My run is good, bike I've ridden outside this year about 6 times but am doing frequent 2-3 hour rides. Swim well is always weird for me.

Fun thing is that since it is early season I'll have no expectations and hope to meet lots of BT friends there.

My goal is to have fun and finish.  Training has not been what it needs to be, but it never is.

We are arriving Friday, but probably not until early everning. Steve is racing Saturday.  A BT lunch Saturday sounds great.

Anyone enjoying this warm weather to get some riding in this week? It has been 20 degree warmer than normal here in MA and I've taken advantage of it to do some riding.

Haha, Texas is screwing with us. Was gorgeous during the week...today, RAIN, wind advisories, and it's in the 30's....who knows, somehow we'll have snow at Lonestar at this rate....

Well Wisconsin WAS unusually beautiful up until last night when it snowed.....looks as if we will be back in the 50s later this week.  Still waiting for my first outdoor ride AND it better be before I hit Galveston!

70's today here in DC.  Got in a nice 3 hr ride followed by a short run.

Supposed to be nice again tomorrow, so great to finally be back outside.

LOL, I might have seen as many bikes as cars today, everyone was out around here.

Don't jinx us Brit. After all, this IS Texas. If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.

I am just nervous.  Lots of life issues distracted me from the training I should have been doing.  I know independantly I can do all 3 distances.  It's putting them together that is scaring the crap out of me right now.

I'm going to have to drop down to the Oly or Sprint instead of the HIM this year. Recent illness and over training? have finally caught up with me.  I could do the distance but it isn't worth ruining the rest of the season for one race.

I haven't been able to do most of my workouts for the last 3 weeks. Started back today with a short 3 mile run.
