I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

Heading to the gym now for a 4 mile tempo run.  Gotta work off all that junk I ate yesterday.  Maybe some lifting afterwards too.

X-mas is over, time to get back on track!

Run done for the day.  Now if I get a swim in tonight I would be quite pleased with myself.  We'll see...

Thanks Eric, I'll aim for that - sprints as part of the Olympic plan.

"Brick" days = bike and run on same training day? I've been doing that pretty regularly. Is it better to alternate?

Hey Randall,

A brick workout is a run directly off the bike, or a bike directly off a swim. On the same day yes, but more importantly back to back to simulate race conditions.  Great to get your muscles used to the transition.  This is of course my rough definition.

Hey guys!!  Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas!! (i ate waaaaaaaaay too much!!)

Randall, I would personally use the olympic plan and probably either do more hill work or speed work than what the plan would call for.  most importantly tho is that you listen to what your body is telling you that you need to do..............a plan is good to use as a general framework to your workouts but dont be afraid to go "off course" if you feel like it!!

ak - didya get that swim in???

Thanks DJ - will do. Headed out now, and I know already that 3200 isn't happening for the swim today. R

CHRISTMAS WAS GREAT!!  Went to the gym one day otherwise just had a good ol' time!

I think my goal for the winter is going to be Crossfit....the base gym has a FREE (yes I said FREE) class, twice a day mon-fri!!! I have looked into Crossfit gyms for a while now and its EXPENSIVE!!! My goal is to get back into body-building/fitness comp shape by the time we get to Cali.... which means get body fat to 18-20% and tone up!

Hi everyone! I'm back from the dead...was down sick for 8 or 9 days (over Christmas - yuk). Feeling better now. I got a 10k run in yesterday, and it was painful. My illness set me back a whole month. I have a 26.2 on Jan 17th, so I need to get with it. I hope everyone else had a great Christmas holiday.

Got in one run while I was in Colorado Springs. I got winded on the hills and walked some. The altitude does have an affect on you. We stopped in St. Louis on the way home and I was going to run outside but it was snowing. My back up was running on the dreadmill in the evening but the hotel offered free drinks over happy hr and after 2 red wines and a magarita I gave up thoughts of running. Now that I am back in VA I hope to get back to running regularly.

Nice to see some increased activity in this group!

I bonked this morning on my run.  I headed to the gym to catch a 9:30 super cycle class (I've never taken a class before, but figured since I'm on vacation I'd try to get in a spin class) Well, I didn't realize I needed to sign up in advance so there was no room for me.  No problem, I'll get a lift in.  Has a great lifting session, over 1 hr, hit legs, back, chest, even some arms. Well, I tried to run after lifting and had nothing in the tank.  I've never really experienced that before, had to be the lack of nutrition, was in such a rush to get out the door I didn't eat anything, didn't even have my AM cup of Joe!

It is funny how you learn about triathalon through little mistakes, blunders or forces of nature, like having a great run after being sick for a week (benefits of rest) or totally bonking on a run because you have no fuel.

I owe myself a run now and am behind 1 day, I'll get it in before the week is through!

Glad to see everyone getting back!

Sweetcorn, Crossfit is AWESOME!  I've never takin a class, but often refer to the website for daily workouts, enjoy!

Happy New Year to all!

I got a good 16 mile run in last night after work. I still feel a bit weak from my cold last week, but I really needed to get the miles in. Just one more long run this coming Sunday (18-19 miles) before I start tapering for my race Jan 17th.

By the way, I'm shopping for an entry level road bike...I'm eyeballing the Giant Defy 3, about $750 which is about all I can afford right now...any yeas or nays on this one?

so i've been a bit MIA with all of the holiday activities but i was able to fit in a few workouts the past week.  I was swimming today and started wondering how many yards i should aim to do, I'm looking to do a couple olympic distances and 1 half iron next summer.  Right now I'm doing about 2K yards a couple times a week.  Is it better to focus more now on increasing my yards or continue to shorter workouts at a faster pace?  I feel confident that i'll be able to swim the distance so should i place more emphasis on doing more intervals?  If anyone has any advice that would be great - thanks!

I have been camping in the desert, but I brought my running clothes to get a couple runs in.  I went for a run on a dirtbike trail yesterday and thought to myself Wow.  This run feels great!  Maybe I will run 4 or 5 miles instead of 2-3.  (This NEVER happens to me because I hate running.)  Then I turned around to head back towards camp and reality hit.  It was enjoyable because I was running on a slight downhill slope with a nice breeze in my face.  Needless to say the run back to camp was not as wonderful.  I should have known something was wrong if I was enjoying the run!  haha!

for now i would focus more on getting the time in the pool and start hitting more speed work come march (but still throw in some speedwork now, just not as much......)

Well, I finally hit the gym again.  Funny how 6 weeks of "resting my injuries" have turned into almost 4 months.  I really need to get back at it too, especially after the Holiday eating that was happening.  I hope that everyone has a great week to start off the New Year.

I know, right?  Take it slow.  You would hate to reinjure yourself by pushing to hard too fast.  You will be back to where you left off before you know it!
