I played a bit with the swimspa swim today, again I need to callibrate the speeds, but I did a fun little pyramid.
50 yards at 50 55 60 65 70 75 (25s) 80 75 70 (50s) 65 60 55 50.

I learned that when I was forced to swim faster that I have a pause at the front of my stroke and that when I was forced to swim that fast that my stroke become more continuous without that delay up front (gliding).

So it is better to not have that glide at the front of the stroke right?  I also ended up kicking more to keep from being eaten by the machine 8).

I should probably be doing much more stretching than I typically do.  I tend to not have the patience for it 8).  Probably a good idea to get on that before an injury than after.

At least I am working on my core more this year.... should help on the last 30 miles of the bike.

I love the pyramid sets.  When you are working at that hard speed pace you will tend not to glide at the top of your stroke, it is more like a full extention, then straight into the pre-catch (first few inches of the pull preping for the catch phase) and then into the catch.  I only kick when I am going fast - not such a bad thing at all.  I like the incentive not to get eaten by the machine!

Ab strength makes mile 80 on the bike a WHOLE lot more pleasent.  Even if you are a beginner, ab strength will make a big difference when you try to hold your wobbly body up when you begin your run.

Good morning all!
Well I'm feeling bad for not WO this AM, I think I am becoming reptilian because my hands will not warm up. I swear everyone is starting to get SID's here in FL, ugh with this cold weather.

Here's my "contribution" for the day!  Feel free to copy the KAti's Mentor group listing below to you log's and pretty it up if you wish.  Some have private logs so it'll just go to their profile page.  Busy busy day at work on tap for me today, I'll be on & off throughout and IF I GET ENOUGH GUILT INSPIRES TODAY I'll do an evening WO, lol!Laughing

I agree 100%.  In 07 I started a core WO I found BT 2-3 months before a long course race (1.5x Oly distances) and within weeks could tell a difference while swimming, biking and running, especially with longer distances on the bike.

Thanks for making the list Don!  I had that on my list to do today, then the local pool called to ask me to get thier tri training program ready to advertise before I go to Costa Rica in 4 days - AAAH!  Speaking of which, I don't know if I'll have web access while in Costa Rica, so I leave you in Don and Steve's capable hands if that is o-k with them.   I'll be back after 1 short week of sun and fun : )

I got a new toy for Christmas and the group inspiried me to get working with it and post a video.  I have put it on my profile but it is pending, if you want to see now go to www.glutenfreetri.blogspot.com  I did an underwater (how cool is that) video of my swim stroke.  Made me realize a few things about my stroke that I was not feeling.   So, again, I encourage you, even if it's a someone taping from dry land - to tape your stroke and take a look.  Bummer is that you are never as fast as you feel : )

Donto,  thanks for the link to the core workout.  Those look great and I am going to incorporate them into my workout today.  I have been looking for a more consistent core strengthening program.  My core is really weak since having the baby.

I had an off day yesterday.  We had a huge snowstorm in the Chicagoland area and needless to say, the roads were horrible!  In addition to that, I'm an occupational therapist in a special education classroom and one of my students (with autism) bit me on the neck!  Eek!!!  I'm fine but I was in a horrible mood after school.

Long story short--no exercise yesterday!

Katimomma, I didn't realize you are gluten free.  I'm not myself, but I read a blog that has GREAT gluten free recipes on it.  In fact, I made chicken stock yesterday using video as a guide (not that stock normally has gluten, but they have interesting vids and recipes for all kinds of stuff).  You probably know about it already but in case you don't, check out Gluten Free Girl.

Christina - that sounds like a horrible day! I am a middle school computers teacher (today at home with my strep-throated daughter) and without a doubt special ed is the hardest part of the job. Lucky for me, a lot of special kids really come alive when you sit them in front of a computer. My wife, who coincidentally is also named Christina, just started working as an aide in a special ed classroom last month. I'm hoping she doesn't come home with any bite marks!

I am the person they call when a kid bites the OT in the neck, well if they don't call the police instead.  I am a school psychologist, clinical psychologist, program specialist, behavior intervention case manager (as well as many other such titles) and teach the CPI classes for the entire county on how to avoid getting bitten in the neck and how to restrain said biting child should that be needed.  If you want to review what happened and some unoffical feedback on the child feel free to drop me an email.  If you want to just forget it a glass of wine will work nicely.

I was videotaped once when swimming when I was first learning freestyle.  Ya it was not so flattering.  My body was at a pleasant 45 degree angle for optimum aerodynamics.. er hydrodynamics.  So it was "get your butt up, your head down and breath air not water," it helps you to go farther than 25 yards and not worry the lifeguards so much.  Too bad my wife wasn't home lastnight to video my form falling appart, er my form at different speeds.  It should be much easier to video in the swimspa as you don't go up and down the lane, you just stay in the one spot... well if the machine isn't eating you.

Underwater photography is none to flattering.  It turns out that when you cut your workout hours in half per week, but don't decrease your food intake that well you put on pounds, who knew.  My wife got me a scale for Christmas... is that like buying your wife a blender... and now I can keep track again.  Time to drop that 10-15 pounds again over the next 6 months.  It turns out I have the motabolism of a gnat, so it does not take much to tip the scales so to speak.  When I was at the doctors, about a year ago with a sore throat, the nurse was all hrm resting heart rate of 45 beats per minute, blood pressure 100 over 50, you don't see that every day.  I'm all, ya I only need to eat about 1300 calories a day to maintain my weight, saves a bunch on food costs..... unless I have some icecream or something...

Wow, it's a busy time!  Robin - 2 sets of twins?!  Wow, I am not sure what to say except good luck!  I hope you get your run in!

Josh -I love Gluten Free Girl!  One of my sponsors, First Endurance, does gluten free programs even for those w/o gluten sensitivity/celiac.  Apparently lots of professional athletes use a gluten free diet seasonally to improve performance.  I don't think it makes me faster, but I get so sick when I eat it it's just something I have to do!  There's so much out there now w/ blogs etc. that it is much easier now than it was 5 years ago!

Christina - my brother and sister in law are in Chicagoland too!  They are in Park Ridge - I don't know how you guys stand the constant cold and snow.  Brrrrrr.   Hopefully today is going better and the workout will get done!

Very very long day at work today.  I spent 5 hours with a student who was throwing computers, chairs, tables, tore up her rules list, distributed 1000 recycled bottles all over the floor, head banging, hitting, swearing, plant killing, etc. etc.  Kept her safe, no one got hurt, went home under control... no police involved, principal didn't suspend her, no one got hurt, most things didn't get broken, a successful day.  Missed the run at noon as well as lunch... Oh well got the run in on the dreadmill.

Got My Run in yesterday.
Today go show homes to a first time homebuyer then hit the bike around 4 pm.

Is there a list of what everbody is training for? Like a list with their first TRI of the year and the date and location. That would be nice to see.

I didn't run or ride yesterday, 6pm conf call went until 8:30 and I was spent from 5 hours on conf calls.  Went home and ate then bedtime early.

Good idea on the race lists, here's mine. Bunch of run races on tap for the first half of this year. I might add in a mid (during vacation) or late season Sprint but will see how it goes.  There is a rumor of a FL Sprint race series coming to town sometime this year but nothing confirmed yet.

Well,
Here it goes, got my trisuit and 3 layers of dri-fit cloths on and heading into the 35F garage to hop on the Trainer.  It's still raining out so a brick run is out for now.  There was snow flakes and sleet for the Disney 1/2 marathon this morning, it's all over the news here.  My kids keep asking, "is it snowing yet?"  Slight chance for us on the coast in the next 2 hours of seeing some frozen crap!

The norms are suppose to be 70F and 50F. They're saying it might reach 45 and tonight 28.  The outside temp on the heat pump says its 38 at 12:30 and it's still raining

I don't have all my races figured out yet, but I have the Redding Marathon 1/17, yikes 1 week away.  Then I will probably do either the 5k or 10 miler at NorCal 3/6 and then yes CDA 6/27.  I am not sure if I will throw a HIM in before or after the IM and whether I will do another mary in October or wait until January next year.  I will probably do the Tinman with my wife in the fall, October I think.

I don't mind evening workouts I am a night owl... 5 am workouts on the other hand... not so much.  I have gone for runs on the dreadmill at 11pm before.  I think the pace measure is significantly off on the dreadmill, it reads slower than it is actually moving, somewhat annoying.  Oh well with no daylight at 5 pm it is the only real option, the ground is too uneaven to run well at night around here without much better headlamp for me.

The marathon should be quite interesting, I am shooting for a 1 mpm pace faster than last year.  At that pace, however, is a fair chance of going boom.  Oh well, should be a good mental challenge.

If it is only 35F you shouldn't need more than just a sweatshirt on the drainer.
