Race results for 2nd Lifetime Fitness Indoor Tri (first was end of February)

Again, just using this as practice, but improved alot (I think since a month ago)

Swim - 19 lengths, 475 yards in 10 minutes (18 lengths last month). Really pushed swim. There was someone in the lane next to me that was stroke for stroke with me the whole time. Mentally that pushes me. She started out freesytle, then did breastroke for 25 (I would pass her) then switch back to freestyle for the next 25 (she would catch up).  My pushes off the wall were better than hers too.

Bike - 15.3 miles in 30 minutes (13.5 miles last month, but didn't know rules last month and the trick is to spin the flywheel as fast as possible for miles.  I had tension set higher a month ago)

Run - 1.63 miles in 20 minutes (1.57 miles last month).  Started at 4.2 mph and ramped up every minute or two to 5.5 mph at the end.

Have a wicked headached that started not to long after the race. So I was not hydrating enough or didn't eat quick enough after the race.  Both?  Thoughts?

Whole race I felt pretty good and shin splints didn't bother me one bit and didn't even wear shin socks.  It is as if the swimming and biking prior warm them up really good.  Thoughts?

Met a lady that was doing the tri with her Mom (65-70 years old).  Mom had always wanted to do a tri.  Mom walked the swim, rode the bike at her pace and walked the run, but who cares, she did it and now she is a triathlete!!!  It is awesome to see people like that.

Congrats on the improvement!!

Regarding the headache, I definitely get headaches when I'm dehydrated, so it's quite possible that was it!  I find hydrating a lot the days before the race helps, since a lot of times you just can't hydrate enough during a race!  My rule of thumb is to drink enough so that your pee is very light yellow (sorry if TMI!)  If you don't drink enough, it's too yellow; drink too much and you're always taking bathroom breaks!  Of course, it's hard to end a race without a little dehydration especially if you'd going at it pretty hard, so it's always good to hydrate more once you've finished.

Got out on a pretty decent ride yesterday, Had a plan to ride 2:15 ended up at 2:30,  forgot to start my garmin, then once I did the battery died halfway through so I had to mapmyride this morning.  I picked a ride that I thought would put me into the wind on the way out and have the wind at my back on the back in, but the wind seemed to be in my face the whole way.  I don't mind because the HIM in Racine is right off Lake Michigan, so I'm guessing the wind will be an issue there as well, but I don't know for sure until I get a ride through on it in a few weeks.

Scott, we haven't picked a spot yet, over the summer we'll be taking a few trips to Chicago to get a feel for more neighborhoods.  We are leaning towards lincoln park area to get some green space but be close to my wife's office downtown,  but if you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Its a beautiful day here, hope you all can get out and have some fun, training related or not.

I live just south of Lincoln Park.  I love love love it, and highly recommend it!  Being close to the Lake is really awesome for training.  It's funny, because whenever I run or ride along the lakefront path, I always see tons of people I know because every one who trains consistently is always out there (even in the winter).   And it's great because a lot of groups do OWS either at North Ave (just on the south end of LP) or Ohio St Beach (near Navy Pier), so if you live in Lincoln Park, it's easy to get to the group swims either using public transportation or on your bike.

The only downer is that the "bike" path is horribly crowded in the summer so it's hard to get a good workout on your bike unless you go at 5am.  Most people I know will drive out to the suburbs or even up to Madison (they use the IMOO route) to ride.

What is on tap today, peeps?  I'm supposed to be tapering for my oly next week so I can only ride my bike 30 miles....

did I mention that I hate to taper?

I'm supposed to be tapering for my marathon, too, so I'm having a hard time deciding what's "allowed"!  Yesterday I was contemplating riding my bike since it was so nice in the afternoon, but I did 2 extra miles on my long run so I decided maybe I should "rest" in the afternoon.  I might be tempted to ride today, though.  We'll see!

I'm definitely going to get a 6-mile run in sometime today, though.

The last marathon I ran I did an Oly the weekend before so I probably shouldn't be giving out proper taper advice

At this point you don't want to be putting in any workouts that are really going to be stressing your body.  The taper period is all about recovering from stress of the previous weeks so that you arrive at race day rested, recovered, and ready to go.

That said a nice easy ride is not a bad thing.  Go out, enjoy yourself, but make sure the intensity isn't too high.

Thanks!  That's what I was thinking, but I'm worried I'll get too excited and be out there for 3 hrs Wink  Maybe I'll go out there later in the day since I have plans at 5 which will keep me from staying out too long if I want to shower, etc before meeting my friends.

I actually live in Tinley Park which is 30 mins south of downtown chicago. I had an Aunt and Uncle who lived in the Lincoln Park area. It was always fun because it was only a couple minutes walk to play in the park and a few more minutes but you on the path along the lake. I also have to agree with what Missy said. The path does get crowded during the summer time and like she said sometimes its easier heading out to the 'burbs to get a good ride in.

Sometimes you have got to learn that one word that is extremely hard to use sometimes when it comes to wokring out "No". I agree during taper it is even harder to try and not go do something extra on a gorgeous day. Normally to help me if I decide to do something extra, I find someone who is slower than me to help slow me down.

I swam and ran this morning already.

My tri group is doing a nutritional presentation (which I should probably pay close attention to after eating all those donuts yesterday) today followed by a group ride.

Usually on Sundays we run and swim, but we couldn't get into the pool today so we decided to mix it up a little.

So tell us what you learned in the nutrition seminar

Had an awesome ride--windy as all get out but nice.

New gu flavor--jet blackberry, meh.  Too fruity for me but not horrible.

Just about to head out on a 75 minute small ring recovery ride in the gusting wind myself.  We shall see how much of a "recovery" it is grasping on the hoods for dear life.  I'm a wee one (4'10") so I get blown around really easily.

Thanks for all of the kinds words.  Here are my official results

Official results:
Swim 10/52 women
Bike 12/54 women
Run 42/52 (by far my worst of the 3 legs!!!)

As far as the headache and maybe being hydration, I constantly worry about drinking too much on the bike so it doesn't bother my run.  I can tend to get cramps if I drink too much.  Thoughts?  Rule of thumb

(P.S. I am pretty good about hydrating most of time.  Pee is generally light yellow or almost clear)

Rode outside today at noon.  OMG, I thought the winds were a little bad on the way out (usually I fly on the way back home).  It took my 45 minutes on the way out for 13 miles, 60 minutes on the way back.  Headwinds and crosswinds were horrible!!!  Couldn't really get into my tri bars on the way back, but did get so good practice on them on the way out.

I like riding outside, but just hate the winds and I live in farm country.   What is harder makes me stronger???  That is what I tell myself.

Hope everyone is having good workouts.

disturbed275 - 2010-04-10 8:00 AM So I have my first "race" this morning.  It's a 5k donut run where you get time subtracted for each donut you eat along the course.  Initially I was thinking about not eating any and trying to set a 5k PR, but I think I'd rather have a little fun and eat some donuts along the way.  It should be a hoot!

Inquiring minds want to know. . . How was the race?  And more importantly, how many donuts did you eat??

Here's the low down on the race.

Donuts + running = BAD IDEA!

I ate 10 donuts during the race, but it took me longer to eat them than the time bonuses that I gained from them.  I had the goal of downing 10 and I stuck to it.  Apparently I'm just a slow eater.  I had the auto pause feature on my Garmin so I could see what my actual run time was

Run time: 18:43
Finish time: ~31:00
Donut Adjusted time: ~21:00

Would've be much better off not eating a single donut.  From what I heard they were much bigger than last years.  I was expecting little Krispy Kreme's but we got big honking glazed donuts
I think I would have puked if I ate that many donuts, especially while running! I have a 10k in the morning, but it's going to be in the 60s and very humid - not great race conditions. May turn into a training run.

You are probably already done, but good luck.  Hope the humidity isn't (wasn't) too bad!

Weather turned out as expected: low 60s, heavy mist and high humidity. BUT, I got a new PR of 54:38, so it was all good. Fairly even pacing each mile with the exception of the mile with the big hills. I was happy with my performance despite the weather.

That is a good rule to remember, I probably do not drink enough on the bike then.  I chew gum when I ride to keep my mouth from drying out and that won't give me the fluid I need to do a good job on the HIM.

Yikes, I actually have to practice drinking on the bike!  My first race, I crashed my bike trying to drink while riding (I'd only gotten in a couple of rides before doing my 1st race; before then it'd been years since I'd been on a bike.  So my bike handling skills were pretty bad, but I still finished the race despite the crash!)  After that, for my other races I either pulled over to drink, or just drank in transition.  Obviously that's not gonna fly for my HIM, so I have to practice drinking while riding. . . Hopefully by now my bike handling skills are much better so I don't crash Embarassed

Good morning, group!

I didn't end up riding yesterday. . . I got to reading on my couch, and before I knew it, I had to do my run and then meet up with friends for poker!  That's probably fine, since usually I have a hard time keeping it short if it's nice out.  Since this is my first marathon, I don't mind being overly cautious with my training.  Once I have this one under my belt, I'll probably be more likely to be a little more free-flowing with my training.

Hope everyone has a Happy Monday!

Maybe if you are tall enough or there is enough room get an aero bottle put on your handle bars, that way all  you do is sip from a straw and never have to move you hands.  Just a thought

carrie639 - 2010-04-11 2:42 PM Thanks for all of the kinds words.

Oooh!  I do remember something from today.  A rule of thumb for drinking on the bike is ~4oz every 15 minutes.  This is roughly 4 swallows (1oz = 1 swallow)

I was told to basically drink a bottle an hour. I knew I was bad about hydrating on the bike, but didn't realize how bad until I heard this. For one of my 50 mile rides, I set my watch to beep every 15 minutes. Even doing that I had a hard time getting it all in. I may try every 10 minutes and see what happens. I'm really going to focus on this at my HIM in two weeks. I have to get nutrition right before IMFL in November. I think it's just trial an error to find what works for you.

I believe you need to click on the settings(the wrench at top of page), then go to forum settings, make changes. Then make sure you hit submit at bottom of page.

No computer wiz but I do not get notification and that is what I did.

Good Morning everyone. Just back from pool.

Hope everybody has great week!

My goal for week, 4 more workouts between now and Friday. Atleast 2 runs, 1 bike, 1 swim.

What is on tap for you all?
