thndrcloud - 2010-04-09 5:02 AM From the vast and extensive experience I gathered in my first and only tri last year I can tell you that your straps aren't likely to be the reason you don't make it to the podium this year.

I don't know why, but that line has me rolling on the bed laughing ... the bit about the straps. Actually, the whole thing.

Remember that 1 tri is INFINITELY times more than 0 tris.

Ahh clipless pedals.  Thought I had mastered them.  NOPE!  Just Tuesday I rolled up to a busy intersection and unclipped the left foot and leaned to the right.   It was time, it had been a few years since I did it.  I was oogling the 140.6 sticker on the back of the SUV beside me and dreaming of the day I could have one of my own.  Hit the pavement right there...in front of a friggin IRONMAN.  Fail

Maybe it was in front of the ironman's spouse.  That's not so bad, right?  Very funny.  I've only ridden twice so far with my clipless pedals.  They still scare me a little.  Need to get out on my bike more!

I have only ridden clipless a few times now and luckily no falls yet.  Of course now that I said that I am sure I will hit the pavement soon.  I have been close...you never know what random tourist or stroller is going to wander in front of you in the lakefront path in Chicago.
I have to admit though I did laugh at you falling while oogling an Ironman sticker but in all seriousness hopefully not too much was bruised...except maybe your ego a bit.  Did he/she see you fall?  Maybe you brought back memories for them on their first clipless bike rides.

And thank you all for your comments/suggestions.  I am not close to placing yet as I have only done two sprints.  But I was just curious.

THIS EDITION OF THE MANATEES IS HEREBY FULL.

There's twelve of us here now, and we are, uh, energetic , so I'm locking the shop door and the madness may commence (oh wait, it already did).

Oh, and I am slow.  Painfully slow.  Like I laugh when other people say they are slow because their pace is often 2-3 minutes per mile faster than I am.  Like I have to really pay attention to race cut off times to be sure I can make them.  But hey, I am out there doing it!

We run the same pace  For real...I have run a sub 15 minute mile like 3 times in the past 3 years.

UMMMMM - size B toppage.

This makes me laugh, although I am sorry about the fall.  There are 2 kinds of clipless riders, those who have fallen and those who will fall.  I just attached the clips to my new, incredibly ugly!, shoes and look forward to falling soon.

My advice on falling: when it starts happening you'll know it so just commit to it by tucking and relaxing.  I may look ridiculous on a bike but I fall with the grace of a ballerina.  Can you tell which part I've practiced the most?

What I'm really wondering is if anyone trains with a HRM and how different your zones are between the bike and run.  85% on the bike is 173bpm for me and any higher is definitely anaerobic as I start to feel pukey.  When I'm running my hr goes as high as 187bpm before I start feeling that.  Is that normal?

I did just that.  Let my back take the blow.  Made a point to keep the bike off of the ground so as not to scratch it up.  Only a tiny scrap and bruise on me.  Turned the hood on the handle bar in a bit, but hubbs fixed it right up (when he was done griping that I was late for dinner).

I had to stop training with the HRM for awhile.  It was all I would worry about when I was running and riding.  While running, I could get to the 190s pretty easily.  I couldn't get over 150 on the bike unless I was climbing Ft. Roots.  That's not a climb you can do on every single ride, so I started to feel like I wasn't really getting a workout on the bike.  Now I'm just concentrating on gaining some speed so that I can average 16 mph on my century.

Generally, the same percent lactate threshhold or max will yield a lower heart rate on the bike than on the run. HOWEVER, if your cycling experience and fitness is less than that of your running fitness, the reverse will be true.

Much of this also depends on how you established your zones. The true best way to do it is through lactate threshold testing. Elegant field testing is fine for that, too. And it needs to be periodically repeated to assess results and make training or even zone/pace adjustments.

Anything from a chart or a formula is no good.

I just put clipless on my bike. Spent hours clipping (trying anyway) in and out on my trainer and pretty much had determined I was never going to be able to ride outside. Then I went nuts the day after I got back from vacation and decided I HAD to go for a ride (it was warm and I missed my bike)...but I had to take my son in the trailer. So I figured I would practice in the parking lot and see how bad it was. Turns out it is easier than the trainer (WTF?). I also made sure if I fell it wouldn't tip the trailer (designed by a genius) and off we went. It actually went fine and I didn't fall...I am assuming that will happen when I let my guard down after I feel more comfortable. And probably in front of a large group of people I was hoping to impress.

Oh and and the boy loved the trailer ride...I call him the tank commander as he sits straight up and surveys the landscape every second of the ride. Goober.

I'm here....I really am!  My laptop isn't cooperating with the BT site for some reason and all the incredibly intelligent and insightful, and of course hilarious posts have just disappeared into the ethers--poof, vanished. Okay, they may not have been "all that" but they did vanish.

I am now at the desktop and let's hope it works.

Thanks, Yanti for holding down the fort, as it were.

It would be helpful for me to have a list of each person's screenname and "real" name next to it (if you're comfortable with it).

We can just start with this list and build and cut and paste into our blog dash if we want. Yanti may have to help with the linking part.

My experience and input on HRM and the lactate threshold tests, etc. is this: Growing up and playing sports a lot of my life I never had a heart rate monitor and I feel through that I learned to know a bit about my body and my heart rate and it's limits from the inside. Then, with all the talk of heart rate monitors and VO2max and thresholds, etc.,  I had the testing done this year to see what my max was and my resting metabolic rate and fat content and all that.I guess it was good to know the numbers and it's fun to put my heart rate data into the program and see where I am, but I don't find it all that necessary. I do better by "feel." Plus, I found that my heart rate monitor would only work half the time so it became frustrating to depend on it. My husband, on the other hand, loves to wear his monitor and uses it to help him push when he cycles (he does only one of the three sports).

I do agree with Yanti that if you want to follow a HR plan, it's best to get good starting numbers through a formal test than from some chart somewhere.

As for the bike pedals go--I didn't even know such things existed until two years ago. I now use road bike shoes and have gotten fairly quick at getting into and out of them in transitions. My knees had great tri tattoos from my falls for the first several months, too. I think it's just part of the sport and I display my knee scars proudly!

Yanti - I did a lactate threshold test in January on a spin bike.  The instructor (who is an outdoor cyclist with a degree in health and nutrition going back for a nursing degree) said I should repeat it about every 6 months and that those numbers would be good for biking outside.  I haven't done the run lactate test yet because the bike one was so miserable and running is harder for me so I'm being a scared pansy girl about it.

BL - No, too far to drive for a 5k for me.  I'm doing the Reach Out and Run at Independence Grove in Libertyville.

Yanti-I do mostly hip hop and contemporary these days. I've studied ballet, pointe, jazz, modern, hip hop, & musical theater at various points in my life. I'll be in a performance in late June, so I get to balance tri training with rehearsal and tech week (eep!)

Hi all!

Am I too late to join in the play here too?  I am looking for some great people to keep me motivated!

Karen

edit - oops, I noticed the title changed this evening to full.  Sorry, it wasn't that way after work when I looked.  I went to a meeting, came home and posted this without checking, and it had changed!  Ignore this.

Busy baking the cake for my baby's party tomorrow.  Didn't get any training in today.  And probably not tomorrow.  Hope to swim and run on saturday but we shall see...

Clipless pedals...I have been using them for about a year and a half.  I have had probably 5 falls - 4 of which were when I can to a stop and leaned the wrong way... Have a nice scar on my knee as proof! Embarassed  I bought tri shoes with the single strap and they are super comfy and easy.  I think someone else had said if you have money to burn or if you are looking to podium then sure go out and get the tri shoes.  Otherwise you can do just fine with the shoes you are using now.

Bake to the kitchen.

Scottie07 - 2010-04-08 8:23 AM CyborgQueen-Your dog can fist bump? That's pretty funny. My family has 3 cats. One is a spoiled little princess, one is the size of a small jungle cat, and one is pantophobic. Life is never dull.

Well, technically she cannot "bend" her wrist, but when I say, "Fist Bump!!", she just slaps my fist like "hi five".   She still doesn't have roll-over down pat...sometimes she does just half-assed job.

I taught her how to " Dance" using sign language command as well. If you didn't know, dogs can read hand signals better than vocalizations. :-)

In this case, it is CLEARLY DJ's fault. :D
