If he's "moderately athletic" as you originally posted and not some kind of rock star. He's doomed. Was his "swimming as a kid" in OW? Splashing around in a lake doesn't count. I'm talking significant time spent doing distances. I'll be surprised if he finishes the swim.

Since, the a$$atars are expiring, let's make it interesting. I'll take bets: if this guy even finishes, I'll change my avatar to a speedo shot (long ones, no hammock!). If he beats Ag, I'll even make it an a$$atar. However, if he loses to Ag, you post the swimsuit shot and if he doesn't finish, it needs to be an a$$atar. Avatar change for a month.

Any takers?

P.S. I'd be willing to give odds on whether or not the guy even starts.

I have to agree with you..I also was a reasonably athletic guy before I started training for tri...I also swam a lot as a kid....knowing what I know now about 750 meter swim in open water, he could be in for trouble....he may be able to save himself with breast stroke...that's what I would have done in his case....

Hey Brandt what's he look like? I have pretty big feet ya know. Could get tangled up somewhere....one never knows.   See you there buddy. I'm going to check out the swim site Saturday (I'm sure it's no big deal!)

**Update**

Talked to my dad tonight, and he said my BIL has not done any swimming....not a single lap.  Apparently his plan was to get a temporary membership to a pool near his house, but he didn't get it, and he has decided that his experience "swimming as a kid" will suffice.   He may still whip me, which is fine (I'm over my tantrum) but I am actually a bit worried about him now.

Now you have the chance to not only beat him in the race, but to build a solid relationship with him too (and by extension, more of your family).  Get in touch with him and walk through the real steps in a race.  Swim start, swim navigation, transition, pacing on the ride, nutrition and hydration before the run, T2, running and walking.  He certainly hasn't considered hydration & nutrition.  That could crash him.  Do you think he knows about drafting?  How about mount/dismount lines?  DQ for no helmet, etc.... ?  couldn't hurt to chat with him in front of your wife, his wife, lots of other people.  Get a little credit for holding his hand and trying to keep this guy from getting hurt or DQd!  Otherwise you might end up winning the race but losing the image contest if you look petulant.

Obviously I'm making some huge assumptions  - so maybe I'm off base - but it still seems worth mentioning for your consideration.  In the end - just have fun!

Oh, Alpine! You are being entirely too reasonable.

I still say tell your BIL to position himself at the front of the swim pack.

Bill....I'm also certain it is no big deal, just like Sugar Land right??  And my BIL will be with me Saturday at packet pick up, as well as scouting the course, so if we run into each other, keep your giggle on the inside please!  He's also racing as a Clyde, so my guess is, you'll get an opportunity to meet him.  He's not a bad guy at all, just a little too presumptuous when it comes to this tri.

Alpine, I have already emailed him today and offered to show him the tri bag necessities, the best way to set up the transition area, etc.  I also told him about drafting, blocking, helmet rules, mount/dismount and even sent him a link to the USAT rules.  Furthermore, I told him I would explain any questions he has, or give any tips he may want about the swim start, how to avoid getting thrashed, how to save your legs for your run after the bike, etc.  (Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I think I could give good tips).  He basically said "Dude, I'll be fine" and changed the subject to how awesome his run was last night.

Regardless, sunday will be fun, and I will be a good sport.

You tried your best!

I have a feeling you won't have to tell him to position himself at the front of the swim pack. Call it a growth experience!

This is so a cliffhanger.  I'm finding myself waiting impatiently to know the end of this story.

Does BIL even start the race?

Does he have to do some awful combination of breaststroke and doggie paddle to finish the swim?

If he finishes the swim, does he then crash and burn on the bike as everyone else goes flying past him?

Does he have to walk the run, or can he actually run after all that?

Does BIL see OldAge92 anywhere but at the swim start, or does BIL manage to beat him out of the water, only to see OldAge92 cruise by him on the bike?

Auugghhh!  So many questions and NOANSWERS til Sunday!  You know, the first thing you're going to have to do after the race is finished is get on here and let us know what happened, don't you?

I will indeed, cadreamer, as long as you quit referring to me as old age.

My name is a reference to where I graduated college, Texas A&M.  The mascot is the Aggies, and once you graduate, you are called  a "former student", or an "Old Ag", rather than an alumnus

But seriously, Sunday should be quite an experience...no matter how it all turns out

No kidding?  All this time I've been picturing this tri guy with a walker or a cane.  LOL!

Seriously, I'll be looking forward to your RR

Okay, Okay, **wiping egg off face** I already admitted my lameness over on the "Your Screen Name" thread - but I'll do it again.

I am sincerely, deeply apologetic for EVER accidentally not-on-purpose putting an E in there.  I will never, ever, do it again.

Although, in my defense I didn't think it referred to your actual age, but when you thought you might have to actually give in to old age.  Hey, if you can make it to 92 before you feel old, that's good right?

Your going to great this weekend. Most likely since he has not swam a lick he'll be hurting after a few hundred meters. I know I am a really good swimmer and after a long time off my shoulders are rocks and have to stop and strech them out.
The real question is going to be the day after the tri. You'll be walking around looking to get back into your training when he'll be layed up on a couch all day in pain because he is so sore.

Brandt,

We are not that quick in the West, you will just have to humor us. Still, when you have a handle that contains old, 92, and a word one letter shy of age, we may be forgiven to jumping to conclusions. Ok, may be not ;-)

Let us know how the drama unfolds with the BIL.....we are suckers for a juicy story up here...suspense is building with the weekend on our doorstep.

Have a GREAT tri on Sunday!!!!!

I always wondered why you would want to refer to yourself as old aged...

You know, I was going to let it pass but now I can't. I am also sorry! I will never, ever put the 'E' in there again. The slight pains me ESPECIALLY since you did attend one of the better engineering institutions in the US (along with NC State of course). I really cannot wait to read your race report!

LOL! I made that same mistake a while back on another thread. Realized it when I was watching ESPN or something. My apologies.

Good luck in YOUR race Sunday. Can't wait to read your race report. And please keep us informed on the BIL's welfare.

The hardest person to race is yourself.

That's actually a more profound statement than it appears at first glance...I find that I can dramatically improve race performance if I can hook on to somebody faster than myself especially on the ride and the run....when I just race myself, I find it hard to coax myself to the absolute limit of my potential....almost shocking how much faster I go when I try to hang with a faster rider/runner....

This tread reads like the best Dear Abby I've ever heard of. I have been thinking about this post for days. I'll be racing in Irving on Sunday as well, the 35-39 age grp, Oly distance.

Please, please post on Monday Brandt how it all went.

For you and him. I can hardly wait.

Man, did you ever tap into a nerve with this thread!! Way to go Dear Brandt

Go get 'em

i think it's time to start making predictions...

Who says he wont even try to tri...

Who says he falls in the swim and has to be rescued?

Who says he quits at t1 as he clings to an oxygen tank?

My moneys on the first option...If he's smart he'll quit before he starts.

I'm rooting for you. You are an inspiration to me, and probably many people out their including your BIL. You gave yourself a very challenging goal, and are working hard to make it happen. Most people would give one of hundreds of excuses why they could never turn it around like you have.

Regardless of outcome, hold your head high and keep plugging. I appreciate your candor, and you can use that competitive drive as a motivator going forward.
