wgraves7582 - 2010-05-03 7:34 AM Morning everyone.  Got drenched on my commute to work but I missed the worst of it by about 5 minutes.

Advice: when riding downtown and the buildings turn disappear be prepared for a heavy rain to soak your a$$ at 6:30 in the morning - just saying!!!

Um... Did you have dry clothes to put on when you got to work?

I'm jumping around the internet this morning catching up on what I didn't get to this weekend. Although I do enjoy computer free weekends when I can force myself to take them.

I liked this article so I thought I would share.

This if from Kristin Armstrong's Mile Markers on runnersworld.com

The Wall

04/29/2010 3:07 PM

Marathoners know the proverbial wall.

The wall is typically located someplace between miles 20 and 23, but it can sprout up anywhere.  It can even begin as a simple, unassuming speed bump, but can grow up faster than kudzu in Atlanta.  Suddenly you find something  massive, directly in front of you, blocking the path between right here and the finish line.

The wall is constructed of many bricks; things like fear, pain, loneliness, hopelessness, burdens, doubt, guilt, exhaustion - physical, exhaustion-mental, exhaustion-emotional, exhaustion-spiritual.  It is a black hole in our psyche, a gap in our fence, a riptide in our reservoir with the potential to carry us away.  The wall becomes nearly physically tangible to a runner, but the same wall exists in other areas whether we choose to recognize it or not.

Maybe part of why I run is to get a good, hard look at that sucker.  There is a part of me that likes to know, every once in a while, what I am up against on the inside.   If we get up close enough, we might spot some loose bricks, wedge our fingers in and yank them out, revealing a rectangular shaft of light from the other side.  Other times, we get up close enough and spot some handholds, footholds, a way up and over.  How much time and mileage do we waste each time we try to go around our wall, instead of facing it head on?

There is even an expression which has become somewhat cliched, "hit the wall."  People use this all the time in a non-running context, signifying reaching the end of the rope, an empty tank, a point of frustration, no return, giving up, turning back.

What does it mean to you to hit the wall?  What kind of bricks are you stacking?

When you reach your limit, your wall, the end of yourself - what happens next for you?  What do you find there?  Release?  Relief? Grace?  Do you have a breakdown or do you break it down?  Do you make a plan or an excuse?  What gives - the terrain, or you?

I wonder if it's possible to imagine drawing a new starting line just when we think we can't muster another step.  Some experienced runners say the race doesn't even begin until mile 20...until the wall.  That's when you really find out what you are up against, and in that same sweet moment, what you are really made of.

Rhetorical question here...
What do you do when you hit the wall, whatever wall it may be?

wgraves7582 - 2010-05-03 7:56 AM Ann(e) - I have done 2 runs 26.2 or longer and I never hit it.  Luck I guess.

On the bike - many times - just put the head down and push onward.  Not going to call for a ride so the only way home is to ride.

You didn't have to answer, Bill. I said it was a rhetorical question, but thank you anyway.

Sometimes you can hit a wall and it isn't workout related.

MORNING GHOULIES.

did i happen to mention that i REALLY like MONDAYS??

i know.  im completely out voted here in Ghoulieville regarding Mondays, but for me, its a catch up ease into to it sorta day compared the hectic craziness of the weekend what w work and dates with cute boys and marathons and being visited by an FANTABULOUS GHOULIE GIRL, which was the HIGHLIGHT BTW.

its one of those get caught up laundry, wash my sheets, run errands, go grocery shopping kinda of days!

though.  i WILL manage to squeeze in my very first BODY PUMP class.  i only wish i was feeling a tinsy tiny bit more energetic.  class isnt until 10:30 so i have plenty of time to regroup.

i woke up w a tinge of a sore throat.  hoping it doesnt develop into anything significant.

I HAVE LOTS OF CUTE BOY KISSING TO DO THIS WEEK.

THIS PARTICULAR cute boy, the one i went on a date with, he's a KEEPER.

i have a OFFICIALLY taken myself OFF the market.  funny, since i never really made it on to the market to begin w.

im like one of those houses thats sold before the for sale sign even goes up in the yard.

and since i have NO NEED to 'play the field', this is an awfully splendid new development.

he's smitten.  and i'm twitter pated.  [she says w a HUGE smile on her face]

how'd i get to be SO fortunate??

im sure to be in and out most of the day today.

im off to change and run some errands.

HAVE A HAPPY GHOULIES!

ironannekidd - 2010-05-02 5:57 PM I did not run today. I debated long and hard about the decision. I talked with friends about it Friday night. I talked to Stacie about it Saturday. And in the end it was not worth hurting myself more to run the race. My hamstring is hurt, it hurts all the time, it is spasming often. I want to be healthy so I can start training for the MCM.

I didn't make the final decision until I was getting dressed this morning. The race started at 7:30, I think the rain started about 7:38. I felt better about my decision after the rain, running on a wet slippy course would not have done good things for my leg.

Instead of running I went and handed out water with Stacie's tri club. I got rained on, had water splashed on me, had water spilled on me, and by the time we were done I thought my arm was going to fall off. I had a good time. I have a new appreciation for the volunteers now.

I have some time now to step back, regroup, swim, stretch, strength train, and hopefully bike, before I start running again. My next race isn't until the end of July.

Ann I think you made a good decission, let your body heal!
