I am in! IM #2, that is if I finish Louisville this August. It's probably better to sign up for #2 before I finish #1.

My first IM.  I'm planning to do Ironstar again in November and Lone Star 70.3 again in April.  I hope I'm less nervous at the start of the race than I was than while filling out the online registration form.  I'm reserved a room at the BT Love Inn several days ago in anticipation of the race...would have liked to stay at Woodlands resort but with two kids and possibly a mother-in-law, the 2br suite made more sense.

Anyone planning to use a coach to train for IM Texas?  If so, how far in advance is it recommended that you sign up with a coach?

I'll be coaching athletes for this race and their training begins now but IM specific plan will start 20-24 weeks out depending on the athlete.

RacerRik - 2010-06-25 1:13 PM I'm in. Oh carp! First IM. First HIM will be this fall, probably Iron Star in Conroe since its cheaper and closer than Longhorn. Just started tris last October. Too fast a progression?

Don't sweat it, you have plenty of time to train for it. Now put your butt on that saddle and run!

For those peeps who have an idea about what the bike course may be...

It is rideable (is that a word) outside of race day, meaning would it be safe to ride for a few training sessions before the big day?

Yes. Unless they throw us a huge curveball and take us onto the interstate, all the roads that Ive heard that are on the table are roads that we ride on the weekends. There may be a couple of stretches currently under contruction, but otherwise you should be good to go once we find out what the course is.

I'm coaching a couple athletes for IMTX.  6 months out is what I recommend.

Wow, Marcy, you're anxious to get started!  I'm really excited about this race.  We'll have so many from DFW and can ride and run the course many times.  From now until next February I'll do my normal racing schedule; maybe a run focus block during the winter marathon season.  Actual IMTX training will start in February.

I had a good weekend of training, but I'm not ready to even think about starting my Ironman training.  I'm still focused on the rest of this year.  Come November, I'll start putting together my IMTX training plans!

pretty sure it's still open.. my opinion is it filled up to 1500 fast, then it will take a while to actually fill the rest of the way.  I"m curious where the cap is 2500, 3000, ??

On another note, has anyone seen the new Ironman Perform sports drink at a store?  I noticed you can order it online, but it is $18 per 12-pack.  I was wondering if it is priced the same at retailers.  Given the fact that this is what will be handed out on the bike course, I guess I need to train with it at least for a bit to make sure it works with my stomach.  The pricing seems pretty high for a day-to-day sports drink to use in training when I can get a case (24 bottles) of powerade or gatorade for $12 at Sams.

Brandt, the Powerbar Endurance that you can buy in the powder form is the same as the ironman.  Just a marketing thing to get an MDot on their product.  You can roder that on-line

Do you all recommend getting a coach to help prepare for a Full Ironman?  I have never used a coach before and just followed training plans.  So far I have been able to complete my events without too much pain.  I have completed 2 HIMS, 6 Olys, 2 Intls and 10+ sprints.  Also completed 2 Full marathons, 3 Half marathons and various 5Ks and 10Ks.

Just looking for advice since the FULL IRONMAN is a whole another beast to tackle.  I just could not pass this one up since it's so close to home.

I think that's a really individual thing.  Some people work well with the structure and others may not.  I got a coach for my first Ironman and it was money well spent.  Having a coach and power meter really allowed me to maximize my training and have a great race.  This time around I'm on the fence, but if you don't mind spending the money, it can add a lot of value.

Remember, 11 months of coaching at $100-$250 a month is an extra $1,100 -$2,750 for the race.

WOW!  It sure does add up fast!  I understand what you mean though.  I will consider it 6 months out.  I am just following an Ironman training program I got from BT.  My main concern is I may get carried away with the distances and time spent on the workouts.  Getting ino the "more is better"  and end up injuring myself at some point.  I tend to go further if I feel good after a long workout; I know that's how overtraining and injury starts.

Thanks for the response,  This will be a fun journey to the Ironman!

Now I just need to find some folks that are also training and will hook up on the long weekend bricks.

I would suggest reading some of the threads on BT and Slowtwitch about hiring a coach. Each person had different needs and requirements for a coach.  You may or may not want a coach for IM training. I like having a coach.

My IM Texas training focus won't start until January/February. July 1st is when my IMFL 2010 training focus starts. Sure, I'm training all year long. But mentally I can't focus on one race for a whole year.
