Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread

I'm planning to do HHH on my road bike this year so I'll get a chance to test it out. Of course HHH is WAY harder, but I'll hopefully do a course ride while there. Both bikes are equally as nice, I'm sure I'll race on the tri bike because I always do and I see the road bike as more for "fun."

I did the HHH last year on my road bike and the Insane Terrain on my Tri bike. After doing both those rides, IM hills seemed 'easier'. I hope I can get in the HHH again, as it was a great ride and I had a fun day. Hope to see you out there.

1.  Is this your first? No, this will be my 3rd.

2.  Have you done IMWI before?  Yes, 3rd time.

3.  Goals?  My main goal is to have fun this year.  I had a lot of fun in 2008 and then did not appeciate my accomplishment in the end.  I was very stupidly not happy with what I had accomplished.  In 2009 I had a bad year of training and never really had much fun.  Pair that with an ill timed dive trip and broken ribs both shortly before the race and it was a disaster in the making.  After taking a year off IM and having fun again I plan on enjoying every minute of preperation and racing for 2011.

4.  Why MOO?  For the reasons above and also because of all the really cool and special people I know doing it this year.  I am stoked!!

5.  No questions yet.

It's our MOO '09 reunion, will be fun!

Yeah for reunions!  This time I will be finishing though!!!!!!!

I love how we call it fun now when in the moment it's anything but fun!!! Agree, it's way harder than the IM course. It's crazy.

I reluctantly will be doing HHH again. This time with better gearing and 40-50 pounds less of "me".

That ride was hard and humbling but it did make IMOO look really fairly tame.

I just found my finisher photo on the HHH site this week. Walking. Sigh.

When is the HHH typically?  How hard is it to get into the race?

It's in June and registration is in January I believe, it sold out in 15 minutes the year I did it, but you can almost always buy a spot off someone later. It's very very hard, a lot of people have to walk up some of the hills, but it's incredible training for IMWI, both from a mental and physical standpoint!

PennState - 2010-09-26 10:48 AM Anyone planning a fall trip to Madison to ride the course. I'm on the fence about it, but it might be nice to scout the bike course?

I'll be out there the full week after Thanksgiving and am planning to ride as much as weather allows, but realize that is a bit late season for most. I ride all year, I'm stubborn.

Bike Question.  I see a lot of comments about the IMMOO course and how technical and hilly it is.  I ride a carbon frame road bike right now with the triple in front.  I was planning on investing in a tri bike.  What are your opinions on doing the course on the road bike instead?  Road bike with add on tri bars?

Thanks for any input.

I've done it 2X on road bike w/clip ons and 2X on tri bike. I was progressively faster but only b/c I was more and more prepared each year. I think it's a toss up. I always use a 12-27. Even on the flattest course here in Indiana.

Fred, can you share the drawbacks of a compact and/or 12-27? I admit to know minimal when it comes to gearing beyond what I feel comfortable pedaling up a hill with.

Some other drawback in trying to run a 12-28.  It may not work with your current rear derailleur.  Some older short cage rear derailleur can’t handle a 28 tooth sprocket.  Most newer ones can.  Also depending on your chainrings the chain length may have to be changed.

Another option is to change the chainrings out.  You can go from a 53/39 to a 52/38 on most standard cranks.  Need to have the same bolt hold pattern (BHP) 130mm is standard for standard Shimano compatible.  Campagnolo cranks have a totally different BHP.

The following link if for reference; SheldonBrown Chainrings 130mm

You can find the chainrings much cheaper.  I use Origin 8 chainrings 52/38 combo on hill courses.  Actually with Origin 8 you could go 50/46 w/130mm BHP.  110mm is compact crank.

Testing your gearing well before any Ironman is best.

2. Have you done IMWI before?  No

3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? Completed IMKY in 2010....barely. My discipline and hydration plan did not was not up to snuff and suffered in the heat. Would like to actually be able to "race" IMWI and not only complete it.

4. How/Why did you select the Ironman Wisconsin race?  I am in Minnesota...locale.

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about IMWI; the race, training etc...?  Anyone from TC's MN training for WI this fall want to start doing some training? Also, I will be doing some snowshoe racing this winter and doing some training of same, so if you want to get off the bike trainer and some outside training in on the s'shoes let me know.

I know some were talking about it already, but anyone have a date (dates) that you may ride the course.  I will try to drive up and ride it once just to have something in my mind over the winter. My pace will be pretty slow as I have caught up on all my beer drinking since IMKY. :-)

Good thoughts James. Does anyone have any thoughts on the SRAM Apex? ie; has a 12-32 cassette I think and a special rear derailer to allow for this. Previously people had to use mountain bike derailers to allow this sort of gearing.

The Winter is a good time to work on issues like gearing imho as you have time to see what works for you and what doesn't.

Yes you need the Apex long throw rear deaileur to run the 12-32.

I did the 200k last year and will do it again this year, as long as I can get in.
HHH was Hard, but I felt great all day long. Unlike at the Insane Terrain in July where I spent the first 3 hours throwing up, but regrouped and finished the ride strong. IMO the HHH was harder, even though the Insane has more elevation.

Bike stuff --

I used a compact 12-25 this year at IMWI and was happy with it.  Also, assuming you can get ~comfy enough, I'd def go with a tri-bike.

It's very helpful to pre-ride the Verona loop a few times before the race (the stick to/from Verona is pretty vanilla and can be safely skipped IME).   I pre-rode it in July this year, and the things that stood out to me about the IMWI course were:
  1. Hilly
  2. As Matt said, if there is any wind, it makes the course seem much more difficult.  In part because some sections of the course are pretty well exposed.
  3. The IMWI roads are rough in spots.  That + hills can make it challenging to get into a rhythm
  4. Some of the faster descents are technical, making it difficult to maintain your momentum.  So, be careful on the blind descents during your first tour of the course.
