Nancy-
I was first exclusively a runner, then rehabbing an Achilles injury led me to triathlon. Anyway, I don't think doing triathlon has detracted from my ability to run, but it certainly altered how I go about my training. I don't even try to run the mileage I used to when I was just running.
When you swim and bike you are still working your engine.
Having said that, I still believe that if you want to be a great swimmer...swim.
If you want to be a great cyclist...cycle.
If you want to be a great runner...run.
I think best thing you can do is what you are already doing. Just go for it and see where triathlon leads you. If it isn't working...change it up.
How's that for a definative answer?
Peace,
~Sam

I started this Monday following Jorge's Winter Bike Challenge.
Yesterday was a longish swim but nothing to boring. I followed last year's 20 week BT plan for the Ironman but I always felt there was not enough distance on the swims so I opted to follow Sara McLarty's blog- .

Have a great day everyone!

awesome anwer.  Thanks.  I think I just need reassurance.  But I'm very excited about starting training in December.

And your blogspot looks amazing!  Can't wait to follow it Tri-Sam.

Anyone here concerned about how early the line forms for the time trial start?

Alan-
Are we talkin' swim line already?
In 2009 I got there very early. Got in line and "camped out" with a blanket to lay on with my wife and two of my four children.
Concerned? No. Aware...yes.
Let's face it, there won't be a whole of quality sleeping going on that night anyway.
Peace,
~Sam

Yeah, we are talking about the swim line already!  If we didn't have that to talk about, it would be "just another Ironman", right?

Good point.
I will say, that after having done Wisconsin and Louisville, I do prefer the Louisville start regardless of the early morning line.

I agree w/ Tri-sam.  I have done IMWI and IMKY.  The swim start at Louisville is one of the reasons I'm back this year.  Even if you're at the end of the line, it goes quickly and you have so much more room to swim once you start.   The walk to the start is a whole different discussion

I won't be doing the C.H. 1/2, but I've considered it. I've read some interesting race reports in the BT site. You might want to check them out. If you don't, it sounds like the bottom line is this...it's low key, reasonably organized, and a good tune-up for IMLOU. It didn't get rave reviews, but people seemed to accept it for what it was.

Does anyone know of any charts or conversions that give you an idea of how fast your run at IM will be based on marathon PR ?

I know running a marathon after swimming and biking is totally different.  Just wondering if there were any rules of thumb for this kind of thing.

Thanks, Nancy

jhouse, marathongirl, and utexpoke-
Welcome!

It's going to be a great journey.

Nancy- Re: your marathon question. I'm not aware of such a formula to determine your projected IM marathon time based on your open marathon time, but that would be interesting wouldn't it? Are you basically trying to get an idea of where you will finish or are you trying to figure out how much you can expect to be hindered by having done a swim and bike?
I think it would be very difficult to have a formula for such things because there are so many variables. M

For all of you that are doing the Ironman distance for the first time, my recomendation is that you don't worry about time...at all. Simply focus of being efficient as possible and getting across that line. Enjoy it. This isn't original wisdom. I'm sure you've heard this before.

Peace,
~Sam

Ok, I have a question for all of you.

If I did a youtube video log/journal relating to Iroman Louisville, would you find that interesting at all?

Please don't tell me here, but if you could take the time to weigh in on my blog, I have a poll (see below for the link). Thanks for your input.

Input from you would be important to me because outside of my family and friends, you would potentially have the most interest.

Thanks. I'm either going to work up the courage and do it, or I'm going to bag it, but it's something I've thought about for some time now.

Peace.

Well I got through my Philly marathon.... missed my sub 4hr goal but it was due to bonking at mile 22. Until that point I was cruising to a 3:52. My quads didn't get the msg that they had to do a 2nd marathon within 5 weeks and launched a full out protest. Luckily I won the battle and still finished with a 4:15. All and All I'm pleased considering I never ran more than 5 miles before April of this year and I've now completed two full marathons within 5 weeks! Plus I now know I can push through extreme pain ... something that will come in handy next August :-) I'll just have to get my sub 4hr at the National in DC in March!

Thanks Tri-Sam.  Yeah, I couldn't find any conversion table for that, just checking.  I'm not too focused on time.
Your blog is great.  And I voted.

Welcome to all the new members on this site.  We're going to have some fun!!

Well, I am signed up for Louisville.  This will be my first.  I am a little bit concerned on what I am reading about the Swimline.  Do you really have to get there early or can you just walk up to where your estimated time area before the start.

Nancy-
Thank you for chekcing out my blog, for your kind words, and for voting. My family and I are going to TN and will be passing through Louisville and I hope to start filming my first episode of The Road to Ironman Louisville. Maybe if people see it, it might generate interest. ...or not and I'll do it for fun.

John-
Welcome and congratulations on your entry! When you go to the swim, people are not standing there with pace signs with times for you to seed yourself like you might see at a major running event. ....Think, first come, first serve. I think you have to be aware of this style of swim start, but I don't think you have to be concerned about it.
By the way...did you volunteer in 2009 at IMLOU and are you friends with Eric (from CAT)?

Yes, I am friends with Eric.  Just made the connection.  You are the guy he is always talking about.   We just need Eric to sign up for either a HIM or IM.  Small world.
